Vol. 45 -- No. 40 --U.S. Navy's only shore-based daily newspaper -- Friday, March 3, 1989 USS Saipan, 'Top Gator', arrives for refresher training

USS Saipan (LHA-2), the Atlantic Fleet's "Top Gator", arrived Wednesday, March 1, for refresher training. After 15 months in complex overhaul (COH) in the Naval Shipyard in Philadel- phia, Pa., the Saipan is back and ready to carry out its missions. Its primary mission is to embark a Marine Landing Force to conduct opposed assault operations. Some of the elements of the landing force include AV-88 Harrier attack jets, helicopters, conventional land- ing craft, air cushion or tracked amphibi- ous vehicles or a combination of these elements. As a General Purpose Amphibious Assault Ship, orLHA, the Saipan operates independently orwith alarge landing force to control air and surface amphibious op- erations. The ship can carry a full Marine Battalion Landing Team with all required supplies and equipment. Additional power projection ashore can be accomplished by the embarked air group USS Saipan (LHA 2) and by the ship's two 5"/54 caliber guns.
