We are strongly recommending that half marathon and 10K runners park in Aylesbury and take advantage of the free shuttle bus service back to Aylesbury from the respective finish areas. Parking for friends/relatives collecting runners is also available for free on the Wendover High Street half a mile from the finish (approx. 65 spaces) or at Wendover train station (£4 charge for the day) car park also around half a mile away. Alternatively at Witchell Road off the High Street there are approximately 25 free parking spaces. Limited parking will be available at John Colet School (approximately 60 spaces – note there will be car park wardens) but no parking at the memorial hall. If you are going to use this option please do not block the route through the car park or the entrance/exit of the car park as it will be used for the turning circle of the shuttle coaches going back to the start area. Limited parking for the 10K finish is available in Startop’s reservoir carpark (Marsworth HP23 4LJ).

Entries on the day We may be taking entries on the day, if places on the race remain available.

Start In order to avoid congestion on the towpath, we will be starting the race in letter designated waves of approximately 50 runners every 30 seconds. The official route includes a loop of the park in order to prepare runners for the towpath. You will be emailed before race day with your designated letter – the allocation of letters will be based on your suggested race finish time, with fastest going first. Your race time starts when you cross the mat on the start line. Please note that it is not possible to change waves on the day – your race number will denote which wave you should be in and you will not appear in the results if you start in the wrong wave.

Baggage: A Baggage Bag with cable tie and tag will be available at the START for you to stow your belongings and which to collect at the FINISH. This will be available for both the 10K and the Half Marathon. Please ensure you attach your baggage tag (with Race Number marked) to your baggage bag before handing it to the collection team. Whilst this transfer of baggage will be well supervised, we take no responsibility for any loss or damage. Baggage will only be released upon seeing your race number. There are no changing rooms at the 10K finish. PLEASE REMEMBER TO COLLECT YOUR BAG BEFORE BOARDING THE SHUTTLE BUS BACK TO THE START

The route The half marathon race takes you from a loop of the park and then exclusively on the canal towpath from Lock 15 on the Aylesbury Arm of the along the arm to the main line of the Grand Union before turning down the Wendover Arm before finishing at John Colet School, just 50 metres from the towpath. The 10K route is exactly the same as the half marathon, finishing on the main line of the Grand Union at Marsworth (close to the Star tops Reservoir Car Park). This is a flat route that should provide beautiful scenery along the way. There will be a rolling closure of the towpath for the duration of the race, however, although unlikely, it is not guaranteed that you will not encounter other users, so please be aware of possible walkers (with or without dogs), cyclists, or anglers. This race is not considered suitable for wheelchairs or accompanying dogs.

Running on the towpath Please note that due to the unique nature of running beside a canal the race organisers have decided that earphone use is forbidden and any runner witnessed wearing earphones during the event will be disqualified and removed from the official results list. Although the majority of the route is on flat wide towpath enabling easy passing there are narrow sections to be aware of, these include but are not restricted to:  Under bridges  Beside lock balance beams (the wooden arms with white tips)  Narrow sections beside fencing or trees These sections of narrow towpath are ‘no pass’ zones and whilst the bridge and locks are obvious structures other sections will be made highly visible by zebra/warning tape and signage. On sections where you can pass please ensure that there is ample space when you pass other runners and make those ahead aware of your presence / intentions with phrases such as ‘passing on your left’ for example. Don’t get frustrated if you can’t pass someone – remember there will be a wider section coming up when you can make your move! Above all, enjoy the route, the countryside and all that entails. Please listen to marshal instructions

If you fall into the canal stand up! The water will usually only be just above waist height (approximately 3ft deep). Someone is very likely to lend you a hand to get out of the lock (be it marshal or fellow runner).

Weils Disease (leptospirosis) If you do fall into the canal ensure that you have a shower as soon as you return home, avoid rubbing your eyes, nose, and mouth and wash hands before drinking/eating. The water stations will each have alcohol hand gel available. If you feel unwell (especially flu-like symptoms) after the race it is important that you inform your GP, symptoms develop seven to fourteen days after infection, though rare, incubation can be as short as two to three days or as long as thirty days.

Road crossings There are 3 minor road crossings and 1 major road crossing at the old A41 in - please take care here and only cross when the marshal has indicated that you may do so.

Training If you are new to this and would like some advice about running and getting ready for the big day including training and group running opportunities please contact Monika at ‘On the Run’ see here for details www.ontherun.me.uk

Spectators Apart from start and finish, there are a number of good vantage points for spectators along the way. It is quite possible to drive to one or more points and still get to the finish in time. Follow the Grand Union Canal between Aylesbury & Wendover on any map and you will find road crossings, etc, where you can catch the runners as they pass through. at Marsworth are a good vantage point as there is a pub (Anglers Retreat) and café (Blue Bell), and it has elevated views over the towpath. Parking suggestions in Aylesbury / Wendover / Marsworth are the same as those supplied to runners.

Refreshments There will be refreshments available at the start and finish to buy including pizza! Plus there will be a tea and coffee van.

Volunteers It takes a lot of marshals and helpers to put on a race, especially in a location such as along a towpath. If a member of your family would like to help as well as cheer you on, please ask him/her to get in touch. Or if you are injured and cannot run, perhaps you might like to help out instead. Marshalling is fun, rewarding and very much appreciated by all! Please either call us (office hours) on 07775 543990 or email [email protected]
