Scarborough Railway Seaside Holiday Posters Including a Brief History of Scarborough Through the Posters by Stephen Riley
The Yorkshire Journal, Volume 1, 2018 Scarborough Railway Seaside Holiday Posters Including a brief history of Scarborough through the posters By Stephen Riley A LNER Railway poster of Scarborough Spa by Fred Taylor with the caption ‘It’s Quicker by Rail’ issued in 1939 Scarborough Railway Seaside Holiday Posters Including a brief history of Scarborough through the posters By Stephen Riley In my last article ‘Flamborough Railway Seaside Holiday Posters’, T,Y.J Winter 2017, we slightly backtracked from Filey to Flamborough to take in North Landing at Flamborough Head. Now taking the train from Bempton railway station (Flamborough railway station, originally named Marton, closed on the 5th January 1970) on the Hull Scarborough line, also known as the Yorkshire Coast line built in 1845, we travels past Speeton railway station which opened on 20th October 1847 and closed on 5th January 1970. The station building and the adjacent platform are still in place. Then on to Humanby and Filey both railway stations are still open today. Left: Map showing the Yorkshire Coast Line, white circles represent closed stations Above: Speeton railway station and the adjacent platform, it closed on 5th January 1970. Photo by Nigel Thompson From Filey the railway line winds its way around the stations of Gristhorpe, Cayton, Seamer, Londesborough Road terminating at Scarborough. The Gristhorpe railway station opened on 5th October 1846 and closed on 16th February 1959. Cayton railway station opened on 5th October 1846 and closed on 5th May 1952. Like Gristhorpe, the former station house remains standing as a private house. Scarborough South Cliff Gardens; Statement of Significance. August 2016 Archaeo-Environment for Oobe Landscape Architecture & Scarborough Borough Council. Archaeo-Environment Ltd for Oobe Landscape Architecture and Scarborough Borough Council 1 Scarborough South Cliff Gardens; A Statement of Significance. Archaeo-Environment Ltd for Oobe Landscape Architecture and Scarborough Borough Council 2 Scarborough South Cliff Gardens; A Statement of Significance. Summary South Cliff Gardens are located on the South Bay of Scarborough in North Yorkshire. The Gardens are a designated heritage asset, being listed Grade II on the Historic England Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. Within the gardens are further designated heritage assets consisting of several individually listed buildings and curtilage structures. Principal amongst these structures is The Spa, originating in the 17 th century, The Spa was subsequently developed and expanded in the 18 th and 19 th centuries and which together with the emerging fashion for sea bathing provides Scarborough with a justifiable claim to be England’s first true seaside resort. The development of the spa, the town and its role as a resort saw the provision of new facilities for visitors along the South Cliff, amongst them gardens open to the public. Some of these were provided by the town council, others by the Spa company while the wealth generated from increasing tourism led to many of the town’s elite developing their own private gardens. Further developments and extensions during the 20 th century culminated in the South Cliff Gardens coming under the singular management of the Borough Council, both through purchase and by gift. -
