And find something you're passionate about to pursue as a career.” Student of the Week Wyatt Callison has been chosen as this week's student of the week. How to Survive in the Desert 1.)Stay as hydrated as possible before going out. That means water, not alcohol or soft drinks. Make sure you have lots of water! The same goes for what you take with you. Water may not be the most enjoyable drink out there, but every gram of carbohydrates and salts must be compensated for with more water.

2.)Take along food that packs the most nutrition in the least size and weight. For some, that might be granola bars, while others will swear by pemmican or jerky. Trail mix is a very popular choice. Do your research, experiment beforehand, and be prepared. When wheeled vehicles break down, it's just your two legs and the path to the next town, and you don't want to be carrying anything nonessential.

3.)Wear wicking fabrics with a UPF of at least 30 as a base layer, and take along one warming layer (wool or fleece) and one windbreak layer. Light colors are recommended both for reflecting (rather than absorbing) light and its associated heat, and in order to be seen at night. While the chances are slim that anyone will stop to help you, at minimum you want to be seen so that you aren't run over. Long sleeves and pant legs, and a broadbrimmed hat, can reduce or eliminate the need for sunblock.

4.)Many deserts are prone to dust storms: take goggles (not masktype, but rather those that cover each eye individually) and a dust mask, gas mask, bandanna, or anything to keep the dust out of your lungs.

5.)Travel at night when possible; the cooler air enables you to travel farther and faster with minimum danger of heat exhaustion. A headlight and taillight on your head or clothing will minimize danger from traffic.

6.)Try to stay as warm as possible at night. Bring along a good goosedown sleeping bag; it can become quite cold in the desert at night.

Be wary of nocturnal animals that can harm you:

● Coyotes individually should not present a problem unless rabid, but in a pack they can be a problem if they become curious about your food. Coyotes will generally be far more scared of you than you are of them. ● In some areas, wolves have been reintroduced; even one hungry wolf can be a formidable enemy. ● Even javelinas (wild pigs) can cause trouble; they are small but have tusks that can tear into flesh. ● Brown recluse spiders and scorpions can also present a danger far exceeding their size. While some recommend bringing along a 'snakebite kit,' there is some dispute as to their effectiveness, and they can increase the chances of a dangerous infection. Travelers in areas with venomous critters should pay close attention to prevention, e.g. tucking in shirts and pant legs, avoiding areas where these animals nest, etc. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and epinephrine (Epipen) can help to slow or stop allergic reactions to venom, but require some training. If stuck on finding water, create a hole in a cactus, as cacti hold gallons of water. Reel Generation Festival This is open to all high school students and is a fantastic way for students to get interested in making short films and short documentaries to showcase their talents and to submit their work for judging. It is the only film festival that provides these film opportunities to any high school student in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. In addition, the Reel Generation Film Festival has been endorsed by the Kentucky Film Office, which is “responsible for marketing the state of Kentucky to the film, television and advertising industries”.

The top students win monetary prizes with the winner receiving $500. Other awards are also offered. Last year, there were students from Lexington, Louisville, and Owensboro that competed along with those from Barren County and Glasgow. There are many different categories to enter. The deadline to submit entries is April 15th. The actual “festival” will be held Saturday, April 27th at the Plaza Theatre in Glasgow and will be open to the public for viewing. We need Warren County represented this year!

The website for more information is http://www.reelgenerationfestival.com. The actual specifics for this year aren’t live yet on that website, but you can go to https://sites.google.com/site/therealtorealfilmfestival to see the videos of the winners from last year so your students can get an idea of proficient work.

For Parents: What is the ILP?

Kentucky students are required to complete an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) each year as a graduation requirement. The ILP is designed to help students bring together their academic achievements, extracurricular experiences, and career and education exploration activities. This enables the student, parents or guardians, teachers, and counselors to work together to develop a course of study that meets the student's needs and goals. This online tool can be used to build resumes, use the employment guide, search for finiancial aid, and research schools for postsecondary educaton.

The Student ILP Tool allows students to:

∙ Explore careers in clusters and track the careers that interest them o Provides detailed job descriptions, working conditions, qualifications, earnings, sample career path information, education, and training requirements ∙ Record career, education, and life goals ∙ Store results from standardized tests and assessments o Includes Career Matchmaker, My Skills, & Learning Style Inventory ∙ Keep track of career/educational exploration activities, community service, & work experience o Record their extracurricular activities, hobbies, rewards, & recognitions ∙ Utilize the employment guide for interview skills, a work search tool, resume builder, letter writing help, tips for considering job offers and on the job advice o This free service is available up to 5 years after graduation! ∙ Develop their fouryear high school course of study plan ∙ Upload related files, such as essays, scanned artwork, and letters of reference, and invite others to view the sections they want to share (this is like inviting someone to view a digital portfolio)

The Parent/Guardian ILP Tool allows you to:

∙ View the work your child has entered in his or her ILP ∙ Learn more about the careers and schools that are of interest to your child o You can also research and compare schools ∙ Record your thoughts and comments about your child's learning plan ∙ Email your comments to your child's advisors

∙ To log into the Parent ILP Tool, go to www.careercruising.com/ILP and enter your parent/guardian username and password. o If you need the Parent/guardian ILP login information please contact Laura Hudson (WEHS Intervention Coordinator) at

WHAT IS PBIS? PBIS Positive Behavior Intervention and Support is a positive, proactive approach to teaching students the behaviors that are expected of them throughout the building. Our school wide expectations are posted throughout the school and inside each classroom. Based on research, it has proven to be more successful than traditional methods of waiting for inappropriate behavior to occur, and then punishing children for those undesirable actions. PBIS operates on the assumption that many students may not know exactly what behaviors are expected in a given situation. Expectations for the cafeteria, hallways, restrooms, voice level, dress, and bus transportation are taught the first day of school, and retaught throughout the year. Research has shown a dramatic increase of instructional time due to the decrease of inappropriate behavior, meaning that faculty and staff are spending less time dealing with behavior problems and more time teaching. Pride Respect Integrity Determination Excellence PBIS – WHAT IS IT?

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is a school wide, proactive approach to discipline. Our school-wide expectations are posted throughout the school and inside each classroom. The faculty and staff teach these expectations and positively reinforce appropriate student behavior. Research has shown a dramatic increase of instructional time due to the decrease of inappropriate behavior, meaning that faculty and staff is spending less time dealing with behavior problems and more time teaching.

GOLDEN TICKETS Members of the faculty and staff are provided with tickets to be awarded to any student demonstrating WEHS PRIDE. The faculty and staff are responsible for encouraging positive behavior and informing students of their success. Once a student is recognized for their PRIDE with a golden ticket, the student may submit the ticket into a weekly drawing for prizes such as t-shirts, athletic passes, homework passes, and gift certificates. Drawings are typically held every Friday afternoon. Students must submit their tickets to the Youth Service Center (YSC) before the drawing.

DOES IT WORK? YES! In 2006-07 we had 1856 discipline referrals. We begin implementing PBIS in 2007. Our discipline referrals have decreased every year. For 2011-12 we had 834 total referrals.
