Persoonia Levis Broad-Leaved Geebung
Persoonia levis Broad-leaved Geebung Geebung is an unusual name derived from Aboriginal languages: geebung is the name used by the Dharuk in the Sydney Region, and Jibbong by the Wiradjuri1. The genus name Persoonia, to our ears, is also unusual until you find out that it is named after a Dutch mycologist (someone who studies fungi), Christiaan Hendrik Persoon. Geebungs are endemic to Australia and there are almost 100 species which, for the most part, are found in eastern Australia, and in the SW corner of Western Australia. They are mostly small trees or shrubs. This particular species, Persoonia levis, common in Sydney bushland, grows along the central and north coast of NSW, and in the SE corner of NSW and NE corner of Victoria. We are accustomed to the subtle olives, blues, greys and yellowish greens of the foliage of the Australian bush but the Broad-leaved Geebung is quite a contrast with bright, apple green foliage. The fruits, too, are unusual, round and succulent, bright green colouring to purple, very different from the dry, hard fruits of other genera in the same (Proteaceae) family, for example, Needle Bush (Hakea), Telopea (Waratah), Grevillea and Woodly Pear (Xylomelum). Geebungs are also unusual in that they have seven chromosomes that are much larger than those of other Proteaceae2. Broad-leaved Geebung has papery bark that provides some protection from bushfires. Peel back the superficial burnt bark and you will find glorious, rich crimson beneath the blackened exterior. This species also has the potential to resprout after fires, and regenerate from seed. -

BUDAWANGIA* AN E-NEWSLETTER FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN THE NATIVE PLANTS OF THE NSW SOUTH COAST Contact: Dr Kevin Mills – [email protected] No. 37 – April 2015 Aims: To connect those interested in the native flora of the NSW South Coast, to share up to date information on the flora of the region and to broaden the appreciation of the region’s native plants. Editorial This month turned out to be very wet, with about 2.5 to 3 months of average rainforest received at Jamberoo over a few days late in the month. Some of you may have noticed the abundant white fruit on the forest floor lately; this is the Crab Apple Schizomeria ovata (Cunoniaceae), which is fruiting particularly well this year. If you live near a White Cedar Melia azedarach tree, you may have seen the hairy White Cedar Moth caterpillars, which are again on the march (see Newsletter No. 25, April 2014). Rainforest trees often confuse people, so many similar looking leaves to study! The only recommendation I can give is that repetition is the only way to become familiar enough to identify a plant quickly and consistently each time. Unfortunately, some species exhibit a great variation in leaf shape and size. A few of the trees with serrated leaves are included here to aid their identification. Further to last month’s piece on Araucaria, Allan (temporary Barcelona correspondent and Araucaria enthusiast) notes that there are two species of Araucaria in South America. The Paraná Pine Araucaria angustifolia occurs in Brazil. Plant of the month is the Beach Bean, a rare coastal plant in our region. -

Species selection guidelines Tree species selection This section of the plan provides guidance around the selection of species for use as street trees in the Sunshine Coast Council area and includes region-wide street tree palettes for specific functions and settings. More specific guidance on signature and natural character palettes and lists of trees suitable for use in residential streets for each of the region's 27 Local plan areas are contained within Part B – Street tree strategies of the plan. Street tree palettes will be periodically reviewed as an outcome of street tree trials, the development of new species varieties and cultivars, or the advent of new pest or disease threats that may alter the performance and reliability of currently listed species. The plan is to be used in association with the Sunshine Coast Council Open Space Landscape Infrastructure Manual where guidance for tree stock selection (in line with AS 2303–2018 Tree stock for landscape use) and tree planting and maintenance specifications can be found. For standard advanced tree planting detail, maintenance specifications and guidelines for the selection of tree stock see also the Sunshine Coast Open Space Landscape Infrastructure Manual – Embellishments – Planting Landscape). The manual's Plant Index contains a comprehensive list of all plant species deemed suitable for cultivation in Sunshine Coast amenity landscapes. While many studies have shown elevational patterns in species richness and species turnover, little is known about how multi- species interactions respond to elevation. An understanding of how species interactions are affected by current clines in climate is imperative if we are to make predictions about how ecosystem function and stability will be affected by climate change. This challenge has been addressed here by focussing on a set of intimately interacting species: leaf-mining insects, their host plants and their parasitoid predators. Herbivorous insects, including leaf miners, and their host plants and parasitoids interact in diverse and complex ways, but relatively little is known about how the nature and strengths of these interactions change along climatic gradients. -

Leaves alternate, rarely opposite or whorled, simple or variously divided. Inflorescences axillary, ramiflorous, cauliflorous, or terminal, simple or rarely compound, with flowers borne laterally either in pairs or sometimes singly, racemose, sometimes spicate, paniculate, or condensed into a head; bracts subtending flower pairs usually small, sometimes accrescent and woody; floral bracts usually minute or absent. Flowers bisexual or rarely unisexual and dioecious, actinomorphic or zygomorphic. Perianth segments (3 or)4(or 5), valvate, usually tubular in bud; limb short, variously split at anthesis. Stamens 4, opposite perianth segments; filaments usually adnate to perianth and not distinct; anthers basifixed, usually 2-loculed, longitudinally dehiscent, connective often prolonged. Hypogynous glands 4 (or 1–3 or absent), free or variously connate. Ovary superior, 1-loculed, sessile or stipitate; ovules 1 or 2(or more), pendulous, laterally or basally, rarely subapically attached. Style terminal, simple, often apically clavate; stigma terminal or lateral, mostly small. Fruit a follicle, achene, or drupe or drupaceous. Seeds 1 or 2(or few to many), sometimes winged; endosperm absent (or vestigial); embryo usually straight; cotyledons thin or thick and fleshy; radicle short, inferior. About 80 genera and ca. 1700 species: mostly in tropics and subtropics, especially in S Africa and Australia: three genera (one introduced) and 25 species (12 endemic, two introduced) in China. The family is subdivided into Bellendenoideae, Caranarvonioideae, Eidotheoideae, Grevilleoideae, Persoonioideae, Proteoideae, and Sphalmi- oideae; all Chinese genera belong to Grevilleoideae.
