Jian-shu Sport League Jade Moon Wushu Academy Rules and regulations (rev 1) The Jian-shu league is a place for experienced martial artists to expand their knowledge of Chinese swordsmanship and cultivate a safe and fun environment for practitioners to grow. Rules of single engagement, part 1 All practitioners shall conduct themselves in a safe and professional manner and place safety and efficiency at the top of their list. Jian shu is not a game of strength, but one of technique, practitioners shall refine their skills to a level where they need not rely on power, as attacks that can be defined as “hacking” are not worth points, and are an improper use of the Jian One if this league’s goals is to keep the required safety equipment to a minimum (located on the final page of this document), and in order to best achieve this, certain target areas are not allowed: Any attacks to the face, head, or front of the neck. Stabs or upward slashes to the groin area Stabs to the spine Attacks to the hand (wrist and forearm are allowed) Rules of single engagement, part 2 Regulations of scoring, permitted and prohibited techniques: -Scoring points in Jian shu must be a clean and clear technique and is only counted on techniques that use the scoring section of a practitioners blade in the allowed scoring areas, this section must not exceed the final 9.5 inches of the blade including the point of the sword, which will be marked with a bright yellow spiral on the scoring section of the blade, this section will be measured and adjusted prior to any match taking place. All swords must have a heavy cord tassel for use during matches All competitors must have an approved polymer sword in order to compete. Please contact any of us here at Jade Moon Wushu Academy if you have questions about acquiring any equipment including the proper sword. -The two primary techniques allowed with the Jian are slashes and stabs. Slashing must be done with the scoring section of the blade in order to be counted. Slashing can be done 2 ways, by a movement that draws through the target, or by placing and dragging/pushing to make a cut. Stabs are cleanly done with the tip of the practitioner’s sword and must show a clear flex in the blade to show that it is being pushed into the target. -Prohibited techniques include: slapping with the flat sides of the sword, hacking strikes with the pommel raking or striking an opponent with the guard swiping the face with the tassel Rules of single engagement, part 3 Match format: Matches shall take place with two competitors in a 15 foot by 15 foot square ring with 4 corner judges, with spectators no less than 6 feet away from the ring at all times. Competitors will take positions in the center of the ring and await judge’s instructions. Judges will go over a brief safety summary with both competitors just before a match begins and be issued colored flags as well as marking each competitor with an opposing color Judges will be seated and instruct competitors to approach one another and “Cross” A cross is the staging point of the match, where competitors are close enough to one another in order to extend their blades in a comfortable manner and touch scoring sections together waiting for a signal to begin When the signal to begin is given, movement is free and the match is underway, at which point swords no longer need to remain crossed, but may if both competitors choose not to move away from one another. Matches will last until a competitor reaches 9 points in his favor, or the match time of 8 minutes has been reached, at which point, the one with the most points wins the match, if it is a draw on points a sudden death shall occur (first point in sudden death wins) When any corner judge sees a competitor score a clean point, they will call out STOP. Competitors must separate and await the process of awarding points The process for awarding points involves judges being instructed to CALL by the designated score keeper. Judges may indicate by colored flag or hand signal which competitor they saw score a point, if a judge holds both flags crossed below their shoulders, referred to as a “WASH”, they have either not seen the point scored, or it was not clean or clear enough to count. Points are awarded by majority of judges presentation of flags, including if the majority is a WASH. (ex. Judge 1 calls red, 2 and 3 call wash, 4 calls green: WASH is the majority) In the case of 2 judges calling a WASH, and the other 2 calling the same competitor, that competitor will be awarded the point. After a point is awarded, competitors will be instructed to CROSS, and await the signal to start the match up again. Match time does not stop during scoring, and scoring must be arbitrated quickly to ensure no delay in match progression. Rules of single engagement, part 4 Warnings, fouls, and special circumstances: The following will be issued after any judge calls a STOP -A warning shall be issued to a competitor if they use excessive force, mistakenly strike a prohibited target area the first time, step out of the ring the first time, or use a prohibited technique in an attempt to score the first time -A foul shall be issued if a competitor has already been issued a warning in the previous section and executed a second infraction. A foul can result in penalty points, subtraction of points, or disqualification for subsequent infractions. -Special circumstances: Disarming an opponent will count as an automatic point NO CONTEST can be decided if a competitor leads another by 8 points which results in a win for the leading competitor A competitor can choose to withdraw from a match for any reason, at any time. If any significant injury occurs to a competitor during a match, the judges will stop the match and remove the competitors from the ring and decide if any penalties must occur which can include barring a competitor from returning to competition for a short time or for life.
