ABSTRACT This thesis sets out to investigate gardens, gardeners and gardening practices in early modern England, from the mid-sixteenth century when the first horticultural manuals appeared in the English language dedicated solely to the ‘Arte’ of gardening, spanning the following century to its establishment as a subject worthy of scientific and intellectual debate by the Royal Society and a leisure pursuit worthy of the genteel. The inherently ephemeral nature of the activity of gardening has resulted thus far in this important aspect of cultural life being often overlooked by historians, but detailed examination of the early gardening manuals together with evidence gleaned from contemporary gentry manuscript collections, maps, plans and drawings has provided rare insight into both the practicalities of gardening during this period as well as into the aspirations of the early modern gardener. -

Hunter MAURICE KELLEY As scholars have determined it during the past century and a half, the provenance of the Christian Doctrine should invite no suspicion of Milton's authorship. Instead it confirms it. The treatise originated in Milton's youthful collection of proof texts and his perusal of certain shorter systems of theology.' By the 1640s, Edward Phillips reports, his uncle was dictating to him and his fellow students portions of a "Tractate which he thought fit to collect from the ablest of Divines, who had written of that subject: Arnesius, Wollebius. &c. viz. A perfect System of Divinity, of which more hereafter."2 Phillips, however, failed to keep his promise of more information about "A perfect System," but the Anonymous Biographer (Cyriack Skinner) reports that about 1655 Milton began "the framing a Body of Divinity out of the Bible . which . hee finished after the Restoration."3 Our manuscript of the Christian Doctrine confirms Cyriack's rough dating, for the primary hand in it is that ofJeremie Picard, who served as witness or scribe in Milton documents dating from January 1658 to May 1660;4 and Cyriack's mention of Milton's heterodoxies5 indicates Maurice Kelley is Emeritus Professor of English, Princeton University. 154 REPLY TO HUNT E R that he is writing of the Christian Doctrine that we have today. Parallels between the treatise and Paradise Lost as well as between it and Milton's Art of Logic, not published until 1672,6 confirm Milton's authorship of the systematic theology. -

SIR, THERE are some Counties in England, whose Customs are never to be set aside and our Friends in Cumberland, as well as some of our Neighbours in Lancashire, and else-where, keep them up. It is a Custom with us every Christmas-Day in the Morning, to have, what we call an Hackin, for the Breakfast of the young Men who work about our House; and if this Dish is not dressed by that time it is Day-light, the Maid is led through the Town, between two Men, as fast as they can run with her, up Hill and down Hill, which she accounts a great shame. But as for the Receipt to make this Hackin, which is admired so much by us, it is as follows. Take the Bag or Paunch of a Calf, and wash it, and clean it well with Water and Salt ; then take some Beef-Suet, and shred it small, and shred some Apples, after they are pared and cored, very small. Then put in some Sugar, and some Spice beaten small, a little Lemon-Peel cut very fine, and a little Salt, and a good quantity of Grots, or whole Oat-meal, steep'd a Night in Milk; then mix thefe all together, and add as many Currans pick'd clean from the Stalks, and rubb'd in a coarfe Cloth ; but let them not be wash'd. -

1 “The Childhood Shews the Man” 1608–1625 Milton’s childhood and schooldays turned out to be a fortunate seedplot for a budding poet. Though his father expected him to take orders in the church, he encouraged and nurtured his poetic talents, his sheer delight in learning, and his wide-ranging scholarship. His schoolmasters taught him languages, literature, and verse writing (in Latin and Greek), and two of them became his friends. He also began a friendship with a schoolmate that was to be the most intense emotional attachment of his youth. He was reared in a bourgeois Puritan milieu that fostered in him qualities of self-discipline, diligent preparation for one’s intended vocation, and responsibility before God for the development and use of one’s talents, as well as a commitment to reformist, militant Protestantism. He grew up amid the sights and sounds and stimuli a great city like London can provide, and was conscious from early childhood of growing religious and political conflict in English society. These factors interacted with the gifts of nature: poetic genius, a prodigious intel- ligence, a serious and introspective temperament, a slender body, delicate features, and weak eyes. In early youth Milton developed character traits and attitudes that lasted a life- time: lofty aspirations and a driving compulsion to emulate and surpass the best and noblest; very exacting standards of personal morality and accomplishment; high expectations for human institutions (schools, marriage, government, the church); a disposition to challenge and resist institutional authorities who fell short of such standards; and a strong need for and high idealism about friendship and love. -

The Book As Instrument: Craft and Technique in Early Modern Practical Mathematics
BJHS Themes (2020), 5, 111–129 doi:10.1017/bjt.2020.8 RESEARCH ARTICLE The book as instrument: craft and technique in early modern practical mathematics Boris Jardine* Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, Free School Lane, CB2 3RH, UK *Email: [email protected] Abstract Early modern books about mathematical instruments are typically well illustrated and contain detailed instructions on how to make and use the tools they describe. Readers approached these texts with a desire to extract information – and sometimes even to extract illustrations which could be repurposed as working instruments. To focus on practical approaches to these texts is to bring the category of ‘making’ to the fore. But here care needs to be taken about who could make what, about the rhetoric of craft, and about the technique of working with diagrams and images. I argue that we should read claims about making instruments cautiously, but that, con- versely, we should be inquisitive and open-minded when it comes to the potential uses of printed diagrams in acquiring skill and knowledge: these could be worked on directly, or cut out or copied and turned into working instruments. Books were sites of mathematical practice, and in certain disciplines this was central to learning through doing. One of the more surprising things a sixteenth-century owner of an expensive folio volume might do was to take a sharp knife and cut it to pieces. John Blagrave’s 1585 The Mathematical Jewel, in fact, demands nothing less. This book, which introduced an elaborate instrument of Blagrave’s design for performing astronomical calculations, included wood- cuts that were specifically intended to be cut out and used as surrogates for the brass original: ‘get very fine pastboord … and then spred your paste very fine thereon, & quickly laying on this picture & clappe it streight into a presse’.1 ‘This picture’ refers to the full- page diagram printed near the front of the book, which can, as Blagrave says, be compiled with other diagrams to make a functioning instrument. -

Biographical Notes 1 Biographical Notes on Henry Briggs (1561 - 1630). 1. Introduction. This introduction is related mainly to the professional life of Henry Briggs, and in particular to his work in table production. Briggs was the inaugural Professor of Geometry for many years at Gresham College, London. These notes are based partially on the chapter devoted to Briggs in J. Ward's : Lives of the Professors of Gresham College, (1740). In addition, the earlier work by T. Smith (1707), A Memoir of the Life and Work ..... Mr. Henry Briggs1 has been consulted and quoted from, and other sources, including letters. There is a fair amount of overlap of the material presented in these two sources, and we will mainly use the first reference, though it appeared later, as Ward's narrative holds the interest. Ward himself was professor of Rhetoric at the college at a later time, and he had available more contemporary material than we can readily muster to-day, so we must trust to his good judgement as to his selection - although according to Dr. Smith, most of Briggs' material had disappeared by the time he wrote his book. However, Ward was not a mathematician, and there were certain things to which he was oblivious, and there we must augment his presentation; and occasionally he got his dates wrong, and these we correct without further ado. This chapter has little to say about the actual mechanisms Briggs used to create his tables, instead it sets the stage historically on which this development was played out. Inevitably, the works of John Napier (1550 - 1617) are examined in addition to those of Briggs, in the remarkable unfolding of the story of the development of logarithms in the British Isles over the ten year period from the first appearance of Napier's tables in 1614 to those of Briggs in 1624. -

Napier’s ideal construction of the logarithms∗ Denis Roegel 6 December 2010 1 Introduction Today John Napier (1550–1617) is most renowned as the inventor of loga- rithms.1 He had conceived the general principles of logarithms in 1594 or be- fore and he spent the next twenty years in developing their theory [108, p. 63], [33, pp. 103–104]. His description of logarithms, Mirifici Logarithmorum Ca- nonis Descriptio, was published in Latin in Edinburgh in 1614 [131, 161] and was considered “one of the very greatest scientific discoveries that the world has seen” [83]. Several mathematicians had anticipated properties of the correspondence between an arithmetic and a geometric progression, but only Napier and Jost Bürgi (1552–1632) constructed tables for the purpose of simplifying the calculations. Bürgi’s work was however only published in incomplete form in 1620, six years after Napier published the Descriptio [26].2 Napier’s work was quickly translated in English by the mathematician and cartographer Edward Wright3 (1561–1615) [145, 179] and published posthu- mously in 1616 [132, 162]. -
