Batting Collapses, Great Bowling and A SUPER OVER!

First grade competed in the Kookaburra Cup T20 competition over 3 weekends in September. The competition was an opportunity to give some young players some first grade experience as well as an opportunity for our top line players to get some quality match practice.

Game one didn’t go as planned. After winning the toss and batting and being 0-10 off 2 balls we faltered and were bowled out for 60 odd. Our bowlers did a great job taking the game 15 overs deep with the ball but unfortunately we just didn’t have enough runs on the board. Josh Henderson, Phil Tunnicliffe, Brad Ipson and Jayden Brown did a great job with the ball.

Game two also started with winning the toss and this time we bowled first. We did a great job in restricting a strong Runaway Bay side to 105 with all the bowlers chipping in again. Hudson Izzard bagged his maiden first grade wicket in a great fielding and bowling display. Unfortunately, the horror show with the bat continued. James Klienschmidt carried the team with a brilliant half century but we fell a few runs short.

Game three was the second leg of a double header. We tweaked our batting and bowling line ups to see if that would change our luck. Surfers got off to a flyer but once again the bowlers did a great job in restricting them to 120. However, the all too familiar theme of a batting collapse happened and we fell 20 runs short.

Game four was the most exciting by far. In this game a few top players rested and the young guys stepped up. Chasing 141 for the win we managed to take the game into a super over after some quality batting from Benji Lee, Brad Ipson, Luke Eccles and great late hitting by Daz Collis. From there, Phil Tunnicliffe did the job with the ball and Benji Lee did the job with the bat. Brad Ipson was superb taking 3 for 10 off 4 overs and scoring 35.

Congratulations to club junior Mitch Radford and Hudson Izzard on the First Grade T20 debuts. On the flip side of this is the old brigade. It was great to have Brad Ipson back who only got better as the matches went on, Jimbo Martin gloving them superbly and Josh Henderson was as good as ever with the ball. We are looking forward to the one day and two day matches where we feel we will are stronger and are ready to play our best . Paul Graham In his third season as club president, Paul Graham or PG as he is affectionately known as, is keen to continue the development of the club both on the field and off the field, building on the last 2 MEET THE seasons improvements.
