Manchester City FC go in search of the consolation prize of a UEFA Europa League berth when they take on Borussia Dortmund in their final Group D fixture. • Dortmund already have first place in the section sewn up but City, in fourth, must win and hope third-placed AFC Ajax falter against Real Madrid CF if they are to earn European football in the new year. Match background • Although the clubs had never met before their 1-1 draw on matchday two, Dortmund's first European match came at City's old Maine Road stadium against Manchester United FC in the 1956/57 European Champion Clubs' Cup first round, owing to Old Trafford's lack of floodlights. They lost 3-2, which proved the eventual aggregate score. • Dortmund overcame United 2-0 on aggregate in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League semi-final en route to winning the trophy. Lars Ricken, now head of the club's youth department, got the only goal of the second leg at Old Trafford. • With three wins and three draws, Dortmund have never lost at home to English visitors. Ivan Perišić preserved that unbeaten record with his 88th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal FC in the 2011/12 group stage. • City lost 2-0 at FC Bayern München in last season's UEFA Champions League, but did beat the Bavarian side 2-0 at home in their final group stage fixture. • City's record in Germany is W1 D0 L4. Their solitary success was a 2-0 victory at FC Schalke 04 in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage, in which Joe Hart, Micah Richards and played. • Dortmund beat Liverpool FC in the final of the 1965/66 European Cup Winners' Cup. Team ties • Robert Mancini faced Dortmund as a UC Sampdoria player in the 1989/90 European Cup Winners' Cup second round, scoring an 88th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 away draw before a 2-0 home victory for Samp, who went on to win the trophy. • Mancini's FC Internazionale Milano finished above SV Werder Bremen in the 2004/05 group stage, taking four points off them. Inter were second behind Bayern in the 2006/07 group stage, taking one point from the German club. • Kompany played for Hamburger SV from 2006 to 2008, facing Dortmund twice in the Bundesliga – a 1-0 away loss in September 2006 and a 1-0 home win in March 2008. • Edin Džeko was at VfL Wolfsburg between 2007 and 2011, winning the Bundesliga title in 2008/09. He scored four times in seven league meetings with Dortmund, winning three, drawing two and losing two. • Javi García's first European goal came against Łukasz Piszczek's Hertha BSC Berlin in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 32. He scored an own goal in a 1-1 first-leg draw before finding the right net in a 4-0 home victory. • Pablo Zabaleta played in RCD Espanyol's 2-1 win at Patrick Owomoyela's Bremen in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup semi-final. • Maicon was in the Inter team that beat Bayern 2-0 in the 2010 UEFA Champions League final. • Kompany's Belgium lost 3-1 to a Germany side including Mats Hummels, Marco Reus and İlkay Gündoğan in a UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier in Dusseldorf in October 2011. • Hummels and Reus played in Germany's 2-1 loss to Italy in the UEFA EURO 2012 semi-finals, Mario Balotelli scoring twice. Marcel Schmelzer, Mario Götze and Gündoğan were unused substitutes for Germany. • Sergio Agüero and Zabaleta helped Argentina to a 3-1 friendly win in August against a Germany team including Hummels, Reus, Gündoğan, Schmelzer and Götze. • Perišić played for Croatia in their 1-1 draw with Balotelli's Italy and their 1-0 loss to David Silva's Spain at UEFA EURO 2012. More recently he scored in Croatia's 1-1 draw at Kompany's Belgium in 2012 FIFA World Cup qualifying. • Piszczek and Robert Lewandowski faced Hart, Joleon Lescott and James Milner as Poland and England drew 1-1 in World Cup qualifying in October. • Jack Rodwell, Milner and Richards were in the England side beaten 4-0 by Hummels and Schmelzer's Germany in the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship final. • Neven Subotić is a Serbia team-mate of Matija Nastasić and Aleksandar Kolarov.

Borussia Dortmund: Jürgen Klopp Date of birth: 16 June 1967 Nationality: German Playing career: SV Glatten, TuS Ergenzingen, 1. FC Pforzheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Viktoria Sindlingen, Rot-Weiss Frankfurt, 1. FSV Mainz 05 Coaching career: 1. FSV Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund • Having spent his early career in the lower leagues and failed to break into Eintracht's first team, Klopp turned professional with Mainz, starting off as a striker before becoming a no-nonsense defender. Never played in the top flight but made 325 second-division appearances from 1990 to 2001, setting a club record, as well as scoring 52 goals. • 'Kloppo', as he is known in Germany, was appointed Mainz's caretaker coach on 28 February 2001, helping the club avoid relegation to the third tier. • Duly won a permanent contract and over the next few years built Mainz into one of the strongest clubs in the 2. Bundesliga; narrowly missed out on promotion in 2002 and 2003, Mainz losing out to Eintracht by a single goal in the latter campaign. • Finally took Mainz into the top flight for the first time in 2004 and kept them in the Bundesliga until 2007, taking them into the 2005/06 UEFA Cup via the UEFA Fair Play ranking – they lost to eventual winners Sevilla FC in the first round. • After another near miss for promotion in 2007/08 Klopp – whose enthusiasm and passion, plus his stint as a TV pundit, have made him popular all over Germany – left for Dortmund. Took them to sixth in his first season, led them into the UEFA Europa League in the following campaign and then, with a squad packed with exciting young talent, oversaw league title wins in 2010/11 and 2011/12, adding the German Cup in the latter campaign.

Manchester City FC: Roberto Mancini Date of birth: 27 November 1964 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Bologna FC, UC Sampdoria, S.S. Lazio, Leicester City FC Coaching career: ACF Fiorentina, S.S. Lazio, FC Internazionale Milano, Manchester City FC • Spent the majority of his playing career in Italy, winning Serie A titles and UEFA Cup Winners' Cups with both Sampdoria and Lazio as well as six editions of the Coppa Italia, four with Sampdoria and two with Lazio. Capped 36 times by Italy, the forward was a bronze medallist at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. • Started his coaching career as assistant to Sven-Göran Eriksson at Lazio before replacing Fatih Terim at Fiorentina in 2001. After leading the Viola to the Coppa Italia, he returned to Lazio and repeated that feat as well as steering the Roman club into the UEFA Champions League and to the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 2002/03. • Became coach of Inter in July 2004, replacing Alberto Zaccheroni one day after terminating his contract with Lazio; led the Nerazzurri to Coppa Italia glory in his debut season, Inter's first domestic honour since the 1989 Scudetto. • After Juventus were stripped of their 2005/06 title and AC Milan suffered a points penalty, Inter were finally crowned champions of Italy again. Mancini repeated that success in 2006/07. • Left Inter in May 2008 despite winning another title. Mancini replaced Mark Hughes as manager of Manchester City midway through the 2009/10 Premier League season, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal. City finished fifth in his first campaign, third in his second – when they also lifted the FA Cup – and dramatically won the top flight for the first time in 44 years on the final day of his third.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • Holders Chelsea FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012. Eight players, including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently FC Bayern München's Mario Gomez on matchday eight last season. • Before this season Barcelona had finished as group winners on 13 occasions, one more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • Barcelona hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with nine, between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Five teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12). • Fifteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including Villarreal CF, FC Oţelul Galaţi and GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2011/12. • Barcelona scored 20 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, equalling Manchester United's competition record from 1998/99. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid last season. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • Dinamo Zagreb conceded 22 goals in the 2011/12 group stage, a new record. The previous highest total was 19, shared by MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96 were Legia Warszawa that same season before Dynamo Kyiv managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, as did Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
