Plunkett in Hall of Fame Roy J. Plunkett, the inventor of Teflon and a Padre Islander for ten years, has been inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame. His selection earned him national attention and appearances on network news shows. Roy spends most of his time these days on the Padre Isles golf course but in 1938 he was working as a research chemist for DuPont. “I had this gas stored in a cylinder and one day I couldn’t get it out,” Plunkett recalls. When he opened the cylinder, he found it lined with a substance formed by the gas he was testing. “It turned out to be Teflon,” he said. Best known as a cookware lining, Teflon has revolutionized all kinds of industrial operations.
