FLYERS VS. RANGERS

Tonight marks the second of eight games between the clubs this season. The original start of this series was scheduled for this past Sunday; that game is currently TBD as to its makeup date.

The Flyers and Rangers have a somewhat extensive history of large season series. This is the sixth time the two teams will meet eight times in a season – they did so in 1978-79 and 1981-82, and again in three consecutive seasons from 2005-06 through 2007-08. They also faced one another seven times a year for the decade-long Patrick Division alignment from 1982-83 through 1992-93 that also saw them take on several other teams seven times per season.

Last year the clubs only met three times due to the final meeting being cancelled by the COVID stoppage. That was the first time since the Flyers joined the league in 1967 that the two clubs had met fewer than four times in a season.

The Flyers are 9-2-1 against the Rangers over the past three seasons, plus this year’s first meeting, after recording a perfect 3-0 record last year. It was only the second time in franchise history they had a 1.000 points percentage in a given season against the Rangers, joining the 1984-85 team that went 7-0 in the season series. It was also the first time since a 4-0-0-1 season series in 2000-01 that they did not record at least one regulation loss to the Blueshirts.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

After the two-day break following this game, the Flyers will complete a 19-day stretch in which they’ve only played three games due to COVID protocols. Beginning Saturday, barring any further schedule changes, the Flyers will play 40 games over the final 73 days of the season. They have 17 games over the 31 days of March and 15 games over the 30 days of April.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux saw his consecutive game streak come to an end at 328 games last times these two teams met last Thursday due to his stay on the NHL COVID protocol list. Giroux has only missed 18 games since joining the Flyers on a full-time basis on December 26, 2008. He has appeared in 900 of a possible 918 games since then.

Before last week, Giroux had appeared in every game for the club since the start of the 2016-17 season, with his last absence coming in the final game of the 2015-16 season on April 10, 2016. Already this season, Giroux has passed Bob Clarke for most games played as Flyers captain (611) and has become the third player in franchise history to appear in 900 games for the club, joining Clarke (1144) and Bill Barber (903).

With Jake Voracek also among the Flyers on the COVID protocol list, last Thursday’s game was the first time in just under 12 years that the Flyers took the ice with neither Giroux nor Voracek in the lineup. The last time that happened before Thursday was March 1, 2009 at New Jersey, which came while Giroux was on his final AHL loan to the then-Philadelphia Phantoms. One of the two players had appeared in 889 games the Flyers had played between then and Thursday.

Ivan Provorov now solely holds the sixth-longest active streak in the NHL at 330 games. Provorov also has appeared in every game since the start of the 2016-17 season, his rookie campaign, Per NHL Stats and Information, Provorov tonight will set an NHL record for the most consecutive games played by a defenseman from the start of a career for the same team, eclipsing the 330 that Dan Girardi played for the Rangers from the start of his career in January 2007 through January 2011.

Provorov is averaging 25:50 of ice time per game this season, which ranks third in the NHL. He has two goals and six assists for eight points, and has picked up four of those assists on the power play.

James van Riemsdyk has eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points through the first 15 games. He and Sean Couturier are tied for eighth in the NHL in points-per-game at 1.40. He has six power play goals, which ranks third in the league. van Riemsdyk picked up his 500th career point in Sunday’s game at Lake Tahoe.

Maxim Sushko made his NHL debut last Thursday night, becoming the first native of Belarus to appear in a game for the Flyers. Sushko was a fourth- round pick of the Flyers in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and is in his second professional season after appearing in 53 games for the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the , last year. He started this season on loan to Dinamo Minsk in the KHL, where he had two goals and three assists for 30 points. He became the third member of the Flyers’ 2017 draft class to appear in a game for the team, joining Nolan Patrick and Morgan Frost.
