MEDIA-backed ﬁlms in the spotlight at the European Film Awards this Saturday

17 ﬁlms supported by Creative Europe MEDIA are competing for the European Film Academy (EFA) Awards 2016 with a total of 23 nominations.

MEDIA supported movies competing in EFA

The European Film Awards honour the greatest achievements in European cinema. The winners will be announced on Saturday, 10th of December during the 29th EFA ceremony taking place in Wroclaw, Poland (the event will be streamed live here from 20.15 CET).Toni Erdmann (Germany, Austria) leads the way with 5 nominations for European Film, European Director, European Actress, European Actor and European Screenwriter. I, Daniel Blake (UK, France) follows closely with 4 nominations for European Film, European Director, European Actor and European Screenwriter. The EU has invested over 7€ million through the Creative Europe MEDIA programme to support the development and distribution of 17 ﬁlms which received a total of 23 nominations for the European Film Awards 2016.

Best European Film

In addition to Toni Erdmann and I, Daniel Blake, Julieta (Spain) was supported by Creative MEDIA programme. Together, these ﬁlms received more than € 2m in ﬁnancial support for their distribution. I, Daniel Blake and Toni Erdmann were granted support both for development and for distribution.

European Comedy

Among the 3 comedies shortlisted by European Film Academy, A Man Called Ove/ En man som heter Ove (Sweden, Norway) was supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA programme for its development and distribution across Europe. European Documentary

Fire at Sea / Fuocoammare (Italy, France) and The land of the enlightened (Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Ireland) received distribution investment from Creative Europe MEDIA

European Animated Feature Film

Two of the three ﬁlms nominated for this category were supported by Creative Europe MEDIA for their distribution across Europe: My life as a zucchini / Ma vie de courgette (Switzerland, France) and The red turtle /La tortue rouge (France, Belgium).

Graduation (Bacalaureat) for European Director and European Screen writer; The People vs. Fritz Bauer(Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer) for European Actor; Florence Foster Jenkins for European Actor; The Commune (Kollektivet) for European Actress; Like Crazy (La Pazza Gioia) for European Actress ; United States of Love (Zjednoczone stany miłości) for European Screenwriter; Truman for European Actor.

Background

European Film Academy Awards

The European Film Academy Awards were initiated in 1988 as closing highlight of Berlin's European Cultural Capital year and as part of the first European Year of Film and Television. The European Film Academy members include more than 3,000 European film professionals with the common goal of promoting Europe’s film culture. Read more here.

25 years of MEDIA

This year the EU's MEDIA programme which is part of the EU's wider Creative Europe programme is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Since its launch in 1991, the MEDIA programme, has supported the continuous transformation of the audiovisual industry and promoted creative collaboration across borders. It has invested over €2.4 billion in European content, creativity and cultural diversity, helped in the development of thousands of ﬁlms, their international distribution and promotion. It has forged links between professionals and provided high quality training for thousands of producers, directors and screenwriters.

Each year, MEDIA supports around 2,000 European projects in ﬁlm, television, including series and other audio-visual works, which are distributed digitally in cinema, on television and through video on demand.
