  • The Portrayal of the Slowly Depleting Parsi Community in Thrity Umrigar's
© 2019 JETIR June 2019, Volume 6, Issue 6 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) The Portrayal of the slowly depleting Parsi community in Thrity Umrigar’s The Bombay Time. 1Dr.Sagaya Sophia M, 2 Daryl Cressida G 1Assistant Professor, 2Ph.D Scholar (English) 1English, 1 PG and Research Department of English, Government Arts and Science College for women, Pudukottai. Abstract: The present research portrays the depleting parsi community and their struggle for survival. This novel taken for analysis is a clear representation of the fragmented childhood of Thrity Umrigar a parsi writer. Since it is her debut novel, it is only fitting for her to write about her roots, her childhood and her community. The writing is fragmented just like any diasporic writer, but Thrity umrigar has woven each character and their lives so intricately through their middle class housing complex, childhood and their community. This common blanket that brings all the characters of this novel together. The title of the book itself signifies reminiscences of the old time it refers to Bombay as Bombay and not Mumbai as it is referred now by the millennials. The characters all talk about Bombay and they all delve into the past and take a walk on memory lane. They all talk about how they were, their ideologies, their dreams their pasts and everything. Thrity Umrigar in her novel The Bombay Time, she takes us on a walk through memory lane or to be exact a walk through her fragmented childhood. But she has weaved her characters beautifully and it is exactly like a walk through memory lane a lot of detail has been given to each character and each character is beautifully woven about how their lives and the community has played a huge role and a safe haven for the parsi community, the depletion of their community is shown through the characters themselves, some go abroad and marry outside of their community, not only community but nationality too, like Rusi’s daughter Binny.

  • D-Company and the 1993 Mumbai Bombings: Rethinking a Case of ‘Crime-Terror Convergence’ in South Asia
Mahadevan – D-company & 1993 Mumbai Bombings 54 The European Review of Organised Crime Original article D-Company and the 1993 Mumbai Bombings: rethinking a case of ‘crime-terror convergence’ in South Asia Prem Mahadevan* Abstract: In 1993, a transnational crime organization known as D-Company carried out mass-casualty terrorist bombings in Mumbai, India. The reasons for this action have been attributed to religious grievances. However, little attention has been given to the role played by Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence in supporting the bombings. Taking into account what has emerged in the public domain over the last 28 years regarding ISI links with D-Company and with international jihadist groups more generally, a re-assessment of the 1993 bombings is required. Hitherto regarded as an example of ‘crime-terror convergence’, it appears that D-Company might be more aptly considered an instrument of covert action. Keywords: Terrorism, heroin, gold, intelligence, covert operations. * Prem Mahadevan is Senior Analyst, Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime. In what remains the bloodiest-ever terror incident on Indian soil, 257 civilians were killed by 12 near-synchronous explosions. The bombs had been assembled using military-grade explosive smuggled from abroad. The events of that day, Friday 12 March 1993, are considered by scholars as an example of hybridity between organized crime and political terrorism (Rollins, Wyler and Rosen, 2010: 14-16).

Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

  • A Study of Moral Scheme in Henry Fielding's the History of Tom Jones, a Foundling
A Study of Moral Scheme in Henry Fielding’s The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling Khuman Bhagirath Jetubhai Research Scholar Aligarh Muslim University India Abstract The article discusses the moral scheme of Henry Fielding’s novel Tome Jones that has been labeled as corrupt and immoral by most of its contemporary critics. It analyses the reasons for being treated as such. The eponymous character of Tom whose adventures play a prominent role in tarnishing book’s image is investigated threadbare. Seemingly immoral character Tom’s admirable qualities are highlighted and what forces him to behave vilely is also studied. Instead finding him unrighteous, the author argues that he is normal human with its equal share of goodness and weakness that makes Tom’s character a lifelike, a welcome change from divinely pure, pious and one-dimensional characters as portrayed by Fielding’s contemporary novelists. The defense put forward by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) and Edward Bulwer Lytton (1803-1873) to support Henry Fielding’s (1707-1754) moral scheme in Tom Jones (1749)that is shocking to contemporary neo classicists, reminds of Mahesh Bhatt, a Bollywood film director answering the attack on his production house’s film, the first installment of erotic thriller Murder (2004), that made Mallika Sherawat and Emraan Hashmi instant hit among the Indian youth. His defense was like, ‘who says my film is immoral? It does edify that extramarital affair always leads to destruction.’ In the movie one of the characters involved in the love triangle dies. Despite its successful run at the box-office, where Anurag Basu, the director of the movie fails is, once audience leaves the theatre, their minds are occupied with the pleasure, Mallika and Hashmi gets out of their illicit relationship instead of its fatal result.

This study therefore is based upon the texts The White Tiger (2008)and The Space Between Us (2006)in which Aravind Adiga and Thrity Umrigar respectively have presented many socio-economic conflicts and political injustices through the different practice of language, satires, humour, metaphors, imagery and so on and so forth. The protagonists belong to lower classstriving for identity where an attempt is made to set a contrast between two protagonists where one essentialise himself and actualizes his existence in capitalistic society but the other one suffers a lot andalienate from herself, family and from society. Key words: Socio-political conflicts, political injustices, satire, symbol, metaphor, imagery, strategic essentialism Literature is a tool by which the socio-political, environmental and economic conditions of the society have discoursed. In contemporary period, literature has broadened its domain where all kinds of texts contain the reference from each other.Julia Kristeva opined that the “importance of text’s structure is matched by its structuration” (qtd. in Childs and Fowler 123).

Much of the focus has been centred on Bombay/Mumbai. Especially since the mid-1970s, in the wake of Indira Gandhi’s declaration of a State of Emergency, Hindi cinema has explored the structures of power that determine Bombay’s urban city space where the hero of the film encounters exponentially communal, domestic, gang, and state violence. These films put forward textured views of the cityscape and address overtly its potential for corruption and violence. In the process commercial Indian cinema challenges the city’s status as a shining example of progress and modernity. Focussing on post-millennial Indian popular film, especially Milan Luthria’s Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), this article explores Hindi cinema’s engagement with urban violence in an age of market liberalisation, accelerated economic growth and planned expansion.
