2 Victoria Day Reenactment Ameliasburg, Ontario Canada

Following a cold wet spring the Gathering of Friends met on the sunny May 18th Victoria Day long weekend to catch up on news, meet new and old friends and join in some friendly competition. About 70 participants attended this 25th anniversary rendezvous and we were joined by an equal number of the public who came to see how life was lived back in the day and to try their hand at long lost skills such as making fire with flint and steel, tomahawk throwing, archery and of course, atlatl competition. While the ISAC scores were not worthy of international fame, we all had a good time and the target did have a few holes in it. Once again, Mike Hill of Kingston won the competition and received much praise and adulation.

The tea boil, making a fire using flint and steel was a real crowd pleaser. The mayor, Steve Thompson, in his first attempt, came in 5th out of 7 entrants. Not too shabby. The atlatl com- petition drew male and female entrants of all ages.

3 A New and Fun Atlatl Challenge in Wisconsin

Some of our World Atlatl Association members also participate in what is known as the pre 1840 rendezvous. We recently spent a week at the Midwest Rendezvous site here in Wisconsin. We had seven participants, representing Indiana, Missis- sippi, and Wisconsin make and use their new atlatls and darts.

During this event we held a four day session on building a survival atlatl and dart from materials that were found at the grounds, using only their knives and an axe. The area of our camp had been hit by a tornado late last summer so they were not allowed to cut any live trees

On the first session, Sunday, they were given a short history of the atlatl, then shown a variety of atlatl styles and simple style darts of various materials. We discussed the basic construction of the thrower and dart. Our participants spent the rest of the day searching for the best materials available to create their own unique atlatl and dart.

During the rest of our sessions together they worked on their creations. We did furnish the feathers for their dart. They were shown how to make fletching by splitting the feathers to fasten with sinew to their dart.

The final day we held a competition with the atlatl and dart that was made by them during the week. We furnished some extra darts at first for them to use while learning how to use the new atlatl they created. Once they were confident with their newly acquired skill they participated in a competition with the rules of the World Atlatl Day challenge using their thrower and dart. They actually threw some good scores considering this was their first time ever using their new version of the thrower and dart. Scores from a team high of 62, 32, 24 had shown that they were on their way to having fun with their new equipment. I was really excited when I found out that one of the participants donated their own equipment to be used at a local historic museum in Sheboygan.
