Volume 18, Number 4 Winter 2003 AVT3 William J. Nolte Honored Petty Officer Named CGCVA “USCG Person Of The Year” For 2002 On Monday, January 5, 2004, Avionics Technician Third Class William J. Nolte of USCG Air Station Houston, Texas was honored as the CGCVA’s “Coast Guard Person of the Year” for 2002. He was presented a plaque, CGCVA ball cap and an Honorary CGCVA Life Membership during ceremonies at USCG Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Coast Guard Commandant ADM Thomas Collins and CGCVA National President Ed Swift made the presentations to Nolte, who had previously earned the Coast Guard Medal for heroism on the morning of November 10, 2002 while extinguishing a gasoline fire at the Chevron facility in Columbus, Texas. Nolte and his wife, Brittany, were flown from Houston, where they were guests of the Association during their 3-day ’ stay in the Nation s Capitol. (1924 - 2007) Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on 23 October 1924, Admiral Snyder entered the US Naval Academy on 23 July 1941 and graduated as an Ensign on 7 June 1944. After attending a course of instruction at NAS Jacksonville from July 1944 to October 1944, he was ordered to USS Pennsylvania (BB-38), and served as Signal Officer until October 1946. Cruiser assignments followed in USS Toledo (CA-133), and USS Macon (CA-132). From January 1949 to February 1950, Snyder was assigned instruction at the Armed Forces Special Weapon Project, Field Activities at Sandia Base, New Mexico, and at the Navy Special Weapons unit #1233, Special Weapons Project, Los Alamos, New Mexico. He was then assigned as a Staff Member, Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in Albuquerqe, New Mexico. From July 1951 to August 1952, Lieutenant Snyder was assigned as First Lieuten- ant/Gunnery Officer in USS Holder (DDE-819). From August 1952 to June 1953 he attended Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, and it was followed by instruction at the Naval Administration Unit, Massachussetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., from June 1953 to June 1955.     DEMA 2000 marks one year since the sale of DeepTech by my two ex-business partners. Being the original founder of DeepTech, the news of its sale without my knowledge or approval kinda, well lets say: rubbed me the wrong way. Not only was I concerned about all the years and thousands of hours of work I put into DeepTech but also about the subscribers who had paid their money for a subscription and now would not receive what they shelled out their hard earned cash for. My reputation not only as a publisher but also as a respected diver was immediately at stake. Knocked back to step one after all these years was a hard blow but also a blessing in disguise. When I started DeepTech I had no connections, no advertisers and very little money. After 4 years in circulation I had thousands of connections, good rapport with my advertisers, and a little more money to start over from square one. Advanced Diver Magazine was born with no business part- ners, many of the same advertisers and a data base of good subscribers available. One year has passed and the small staff at ADM has delivered what we had prom- ised. An on-time, high quality, fully illustrated dive magazine like no other. Designed with a good balance of text, illustrations, photos and less than 20% advertising. ADM will continue into the new millen- nium providing what we promised our subscribers with the quality and graphic design that I expect as the founder and publisher. After all, my reputation is at stake.

Volume 31, Number 1 Spring 2016 Association Continues FRC Plaque Program Presentations Made Recently to Fast Response Cutters Yered, Clark, Evans, Trump and David, Jr. Since CGCVA National President Michael Placencia presented the Association’s first commissioning plaque to the CGC Heriberto Hernandez in Puerto Rico in October 2015, it was decided that this would be an outstanding program for all new Coast Guard cutters named after USCG combat veterans. Those ships would receive a plaque that could be mounted on the bulkhead for all to see. A retroactive program to catch up with those cutters that had already been commissioned and were in service were not to be left out. The five cutters that received plaques represent two Silver Stars, two Navy Crosses and a Navy Marine Corp Medal. On Feb 24th and March 2nd, our Association awarded CGCVA VP Steve Petersen presents an Association plaque to Lt.Cdr. Brian Finn, commanding officer of CGC Charles David. CGCVA plaques to the following Coast Guard cutters: In Sector Miami, Florida: CGC Robert Yered (WPC 1104) and CGC Paul Clark (WPC 1106) .
