This volume takes a close look at the most popular and influential period of the great American modernist painter Marsden Hartley—his Berlin years, during which he produced his pioneering "German Officer" portraits and a series of works that occupy a unique zone between abstraction and figuration. During a brief stint in Paris, Hartley met and fell in love with a Prussian officer, and early in 1913 he followed the officer to Berlin. When war broke out the officer was called up, and was killed in action in October 1914. Mourning his loss, Hartley created an astounding series of paintings that abstracted components of the officer's uniform, retaining their military symbolism and patterns. Nearly a half-century later, this combination of bright color and composition with popular signage, informed by the coding of gay culture, was to make a strong impact on Pop artists such as Jasper Johns and Robert Indiana. In this volume, approximately 25 of the artist’s works from these years (1913–1915) reveal the impact of World War I and elucidate the artist's appropriation of military symbols and Native American motifs. Also included are an illustrated chronology and a wealth of archival material that conveys the historical moment in which these works were made.

Virginia St Reno, NV 89557 University Galleries is pleased to announce a new exhibition curated by internationally renowned artist Jack Pierson. First conceived as a publication, the third volume of which was recently released by Bywater Bros. Editions, Tomorrow’s Man has grown into a three dimensional iteration of the bulletin-board, idea mashup found in the publication and includes many of the artists Pierson finds most interesting and thought provoking. Inspired by a midcentury male physique magazine of the same name, the exhibition Tomorrow’s Man includes artworks by over a dozen artists including Michael Bilsborough, Laurel Sparks, Richard Tinkler, Florence Derive, Chris Bogia, Bryson Rand, David Dupuis, Jeff Davis, Andrea Zittell, Cali DeWitt, Shari Elf, Zak Arctander, Kembra Pfahler, Joe Sinness, Paul Sepuya, Elisabeth Kley, and Peter Fend. Recognized by New York Times columnist Robert Smith for his innovative curatorial style which engenders multiple and concurrent dialogues and ideas within the gallery, Pierson’s work as a curator is an extension of his art practice which demonstrates a strong interface between high and low culture, pop sensibility, and multimedia interests. Jack Pierson’s photographic work has often been compared to the imagery in road movies; this particular film genre has shaped our conception of the American landscape. In his most recent body of work, created on North Captiva Island, off Florida's Gulf Coast, the artist explores the emotional undercurrents of our daily lives, from the intimacy of romantic attachment to the distant idealization of escape. As he recently stated: “Most of my work is very temporary, very provisional. You can take it with you or you can leave it. Although part of what art is supposed to do is make you immortal, either by making it or owning it.”1 The title evokes the idea of Wanderlust (the strong desire to travel), a concept strongly influenced by German Romanticism. The landscapes presented in the exhibition express the inner urge to experience nature and the world far from home. Imbued with the nostalgia of summer, the seascapes, with their atmospheric and almost abstract qualities, trigger contemplation. Yet, they are less records of a past moment than a starting point to unravel a thread of fiction. “Pierson is more intent on reflecting the fictional rather than the documentary qualities of the medium. As such, photography becomes a medium to escape from the world, a medium for stylization and for fiction and lies.

  • Jack Pierson Has Establis- Hed a Unique Pictorial Language with a Deeply Personal Poetic Vision
    something new at the time and inspired a whole generation of artists and curators. The technique of collage and its inherit idea of creating spaces by assembling different elements and fragments, has been in focus of Pierson’s artistic practice since the very beginning. Be it photographs, word-pieces (sculptures), drawings, artist books as well as their presentation, Pierson’s works tell a sto- ry, that gradually unfolds. From the outset of his artistic work, Jack Pierson has establis- hed a unique pictorial language with a deeply personal poetic vision. We occasionally experience a melancholy undertone in his work and the associated feelings of memory, hope, desire or loss and longing. Being part of a group of young photographers that included Nan Goldin, Mark Morrisroe, Philip-Lorca diCorcia and David Armstrong and was later associated with the name Boston School, Pierson was one of those artists that revolutionised the use of photography in the 1990s and influenced the way it has been developed and perceived since. In his new photography the collage and the underlying process of its creation becomes the subject itself. The assemblage-like use of individual fragments on the picture plane plays with a three-dimensional space that is given an abstract quality by the distinct use of primary colors.     More Life: Mark Morrisroe Opening June 24, 2021 34 East 69th Street, New York Appointment bookings available on davidzwirner.com Mark Morrisroe, Sweet Raspberry/ Spanish Madonna, 1986 © Estate of Mark Morrisroe (Ringier Collection) David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of works by the photographer and filmmaker Mark Morrisroe, curated by artist Ryan McGinley, at the gallery’s East 69th Street location in New York. Known as Mark Dirt in his Boston punk days, Mark Morrisroe (1959–1989) was, in the words of his former boyfriend Jack Pierson, “magnetic and scary, … the most extreme person I had ever encountered.”1 Within his short life, Morrisroe produced a body of work that examined queer kinship, the performance of gender, and the intimacy of risk while experimenting formally with his chosen Polaroid medium. After capturing thousands of images as well as appropriating stills from his Super 8 films, Morrisroe further manipulated his photographs through a number of unconventional techniques, producing distinctive dreamlike prints. In landscapes and portraiture, he documented his circle of friends, lovers, and himself. Many of Morrisroe’s subjects, including David Armstrong, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Pat Hearn, and Pierson, attended Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts or the Massachusetts College of Art; this group would become known as the Boston School. This selection of photographic work lushly re-creates the social context of a band of iconoclastic artists at the cusp of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and remembers a figure who lived and documented life at the periphery. It’s a photographer’s job to introduce work from an older generation to a newer generation of image makers.

It was upstairs at 20 East Street, and in the very early 1980s, it was home to Mike Carroll and Penelope Place. Blocks away from South Station, on the outer edges of what was the Combat Zone until the mid 1970s, the 11th Hour was situated among parking lots and big businesses. Carroll and Place had found the space when they needed somewhere to make work for the Boston Film Video Archive. They weren’t supposed to be living there as it was aive at night. It was after commercial building, and was thus heated only Monday through Friday, nine in the mornnine and before ive that the 11th Hour was very awake, as Carroll and Place put on raucous performances by The Fuckinging until Barbies, Steve Stain, Human Sexual Response and others, including the Clam Twins, the drag duo that were Taboo! (Stephen Tashjian) and Mark Morrisroe. They also put art on the walls—art that challenged the material of photography and the nature of performance, ilm and document. The material and character of photography exploded in the 1970s, in the wake of such texts as Susan Sontag’s On Photography and technological innovations such as Polaroid.
