A collection of cans illustrates the vast range of possible shapes and applications.

A can is a can

Or is it? Cans, like butterflies, come in a dazzling array of shapes and sizes. Similarly to many other insects, butterflies use physical attributes evolved over time for a myriad different purposes, from attracting mates to deterring predators. Cans display similar characteristics and can be designed and manufactured to meet the countless different needs of users precisely. From protecting contents to generating sales with their distinctive exteriors, cans are one of the most versatile forms of packaging available. And adapt to changing demands faster than any butterfly.

n March of this year, Tetra Pak presented in its R&D Centre in Lund, , to an international group of packaging journalists, as it used to do regularly, the so-called “Ten ITetra Recart facts” about its Tetra Recart packag- ing system. Tetra Recart was presented again as the ‘21st century alternative for Canned Food’. The claims that Tetra Pak advances in favour of the Tetra Recart system are manifold. To point at the sustainability of the ‘new’ system (it was launched in 2003) Tetra Pak claims the packaging “contains 69 per cent paperboard” and “is recyclable and fits into existing waste recycling systems”. The Tetra Recart system aims at a “wide range of food categories, such as vegetables, beans, tomatoes, baked beans, ready meals, pet food and soups and sauces.” Shelf space will apparently be reduced by 30-40 per cent compared to round packages and supply chain sav- ings are claimed to be in the range of 10-40 per cent Retailers demand a shelf life of three years for compared to cans and glass jars. south to expand its speciality can production capacity. Elsewhere in South America, Rexam BCSA opened a swing production line in Chile, which provided additional capacity and flexibility at the company’s Santiago plant. Although canned beverage consumption has grown during the past year, Medeiros noted that the impact of the 2014 World Cup tournament in Brazil makes year-on-year comparisons with 2015 difficult to forecast. Some 12 cities across Brazil hosted football matches during the World Cup and as part of celebrations the cities organised a large number of public events, which boosted consumption of canned beer and soft drinks during the World Cup tournament. “With 2015 it’s a tricky comparison as the baseline was high last year. The World Cup is a one-off event, and in March and April last year we had a stock build up for the World Cup,” Medeiros explained. “So far there has been negligible growth in 2015 in the bev- erage can market year-on-year. Our expectation is that overall demand will be flat this year, so if we can achieve that [and retain last year’s growth] without the World Cup tournament then that will be a very good result.” Growing consumption of canned beer is driving Brazil’s bev- erage can market. Currently about 45 per cent of all beer con- sumed in Brazil is sold in two-piece cans. So far there has been negligible growth in 2015 in the beverage can market year-on- year. Our expectation is that overall demand will be flat this year, so if we can achieve that [and retain last year’s growth] without the World Cup tournament then that will be a very good result

“Canned beer consumption grew last year. Cans allow people to drink on the go and they are popular for outdoor parties,” Medeiros said. “In Brazil the beer can share is growing steadily because Rexam offers different beverage can sizes. “One size for which sales are growing fast is the 269ml (9.1oz) slim line can. In our climate this size allows beer to be drunk and finished without getting warm. This can size is well accepted by consumers in Rio de Janiero, the north east and south east of Brazil. “Another reason the can share of the beer market is growing is that previously returnable glass bottles were mostly used for beer, but now consumers prefer one-way packaging as they do not have to return the beer can. It’s about lifestyle – a can is a one way package; it’s quite convenient.” Rexam BCSA produces aluminium beverage cans in five sizes. The 250ml (8.4oz) regular shape can is the smallest, followed by the company’s 269ml slim line can and the popular 350ml (12oz) regular can size. Rexam also produces a 473ml (16oz) beverage can for the Brazilian market and a 710ml (24oz) two-piece can size. “The idea is to offer consumers different packaging sizes for their different needs,” Medeiros explained. “About 70-75 per cent of the cans we produce are to fill with beer. The most popular can size is the 350ml can, which is similar to Europe where the

Due to the expansion of the business, in 1964 a new plant was established in La Victoria. Two years later, following the acquisition of 600 acres in Valencia, a new facility was opened. The new plants were equipped with the latest technology available at that time. By 1978, Dominguez had opened a new plant in Los Teques, a small city close to Caracas. This plant was equipped to attend to the general line clients, and also some food cans with irregular shapes (rectangular etc). By that time the company was the biggest can manufacturer in Venezuela. Since diversity was always the object of the man- agement, in 1978 Dominguez started its two-piece can operation in association with Continental Can Company. This is a facility with a capacity of 500 million cans per year to attend to the rising market of beer and beverage cans. For that purpose a new factory was constructed in the industrial city of Barquisimeto, 300 miles from Caracas. As an answer to the replacement of some metal cans for plastic containers, Dominguez acquired a plastic container manufacturing company, also located in Barquisimeto, able to manufacture injection containers for powdered food. Years later, and to maintain its leadership in the motor oil market, the company made an investment to open a new

FINANCE Packaging: a sound investment? Rupert Taylor, managing director, Head of Industrials EMEA, Corporate Advisory and Etienne Hairy, managing director, European Leveraged Finance, at Royal Bank of Scotland take a look at the packaging industry from a financial point of view

onsumer packaging companies are in demand from both equity and debt investors. They offer an attractive com- bination of a strong growth outlook Cwith relatively predictable and stable cash flows. Primary consumer packages are key to the underly- ing product, offering both an effective barrier and as a brand carrier. They are a critical part of the overall product supply chain and large consumer packaging companies have continued to innovate to ensure they have kept up-to-date with their custom- ers and underlying consumer demands. Innovation has helped ensure the products have maintained their resilience to substitution and their barrier to entry to new players. Driven by positive underlying growth trends in consumer goods in both devel- oped and emerging markets, consistent customer relationships, and frequently an element of cost pass through, consumer packaging groups tend to generate resilient, relatively stable and growing cash flows. This combination of robust business and financial risk profiles has seen strong and consistent interest in the sector from financial sponsor investors, across the spectrum of substrates from metal to glass to rigid plastics to film to fibre-based. In a low-return environment, recent fundraisings have seen private

In terms of challenges faced by the company, Anders clearly has the expertise required, but to they are twofold. The first is from a technical point explain the process to me in layman’s terms was perhaps more of a challenge than his daily respon- sibilities. As I understand it though, the images are created to be flat, therefore avoiding the need to print over the top of any other colours. A series of dots are created, and then a number of dots are removed where they are not necessary or do not add anything to the finished image. The colours are built up in this way and the plates are then laser etched at different heights. This means that a saving can be made in the amount of ink used to create the finished image, which to a certain extent offsets the cost of the process itself to the customer. So how is this different from the way in which competitors operate? Flemming says that it’s diffi- cult to describe. “I am not completely knowledgeable on what other companies are doing, since we are in the situation that we do not have competitors seen from a quality point of view. But what we are doing is as stated in our vision and mission – always seeking to

JUNE 2015 cantechonline.com 37 PAKISTAN PAKISTAN “CAN” In the Autumn of 2014, there was an announcement that the first beverage can plant was going to be built in Pakistan, one of the rapidly diminishing number of countries without a plant. Simon Jennings, chairman of Pakistan Aluminium Beverage Can and a member of the CanTech Advisory Board, takes a closer look

akistan is a country which has had its share of headlines over the past years, many not very positive. However, the headline not often seen or heard of is that of the robust growth of its economy. A country with a population of just over 185 million Ppeople, Pakistan is the sixth most populous place in the world. It has a track record of growth over the past five years, with four per cent GDP growth seen in 2014. The level of expansion is expected to continue, with the IMF forecasting annual GDP growth increasing. This is supported by lower oil prices, a thriving stock market, increas- es in remittances from Pakistanis working abroad and the increasing amounts of Foreign Direct Investments. Amongst the major projects announced recently is the develop- ment of road links with China, as part of the revival of the famous Silk Road, a portion of a US$28 billion investment pledge covering infrastructure announced on the visit of President Xi Jinping in April. Consumer expenditure trebled between 2002 and 2012, driven by the growing young population with a median age of 22 and the emerging middle class. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the number of households with annual incomes over US$5,000 to double, from 4.82m in 2013 to 8.94m in 2017 and those with annual earnings over US$10,000 to rise from 0.9m to 1.74m. Local economists believe the middle class is larger at 25 per cent of the population and are even more optimistic about the future. Retailing in Pakistan is one of the least concentrated in the world, with few major chains, most shopping being on a daily basis in a large number of small stores. Modern gro- cery distribution is however showing very fast growth, with supermarkets and cash & carries gaining share with local companies (USC and Gourmet for example) and joint ventures with multi national groups (such as Metro & Carrefour) developing the market.

The official ground breaking ceremony is planned for August, with the plant being scheduled for commissioning in the second half of 2016. Production will be ramped up by PABC over the next years, as the underlying demand for beverage cans increases in the region. This growth will be accelerated as a result of local supply making the beverage can even more attractive to fillers, with an improved supply chain and meeting the underlying consumers’ preference for beverage cans as a single serve and premium container. Q: WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
