COUNTYDUBLIN, I was born in Glenelly, Co. Tyrone, on 26th September, 1900 and after leaving school I went to Hughes' Academy in Derry City. I lived at 17 Foyle St. in the private apartments of the group of buildings known as Conlan's Rooms My uncle administered this property. The Irish Volunteers used these buildings as Assembly Rooms. My "keeper" was Miss Conlan and Miss Reddy - both of these ladies were elderly spinsters. I think I actually became a member of the National Volunteers about the middle of 1914. I was intended for the Church, and while getting a grind from Ft. Jos. Lagan, C.C., Cranagh, preparatory to entering St. Columb's College - a brother of Dr. Lagan, the donor of the Lagan Cup to the Gaelic Athletic Association - I persuaded him to take me into a juvenile section of the local Company that he directed. This was probably the Fianna. When the Rising occurred in Dublin during Easter Week 1916, there was some activity in Derry. A number of the leading Volunteers were arrested and subsequently interned. -

So you are thinking of having a barn dance! Have you organised one before? If you haven't then the following may be of use to you. A barn dance is one of the only ways you can get everyone involved from the start. NO experience is needed to take part. Anyone from four to ninty four can join in. The only skill needed is being able to walk. All that is required is to be able to join hands in a line or a circle, link arms with another dancer, or join hands to make an arch. The rest is as easy as falling off a log. You dance in couples and depending on the type of dance you can dance in groups from two couples, four couples, and upwards to include the whole floor. You could be dancing in lines, in coloumns, in squares or in circles,. It depends on which dance the caller calls. The caller will walk everyone through the dance first so all the dancers know what the moves are. The caller will call out all the moves as you dance until the dancers can dance the dance on their own. A dance can last between 10 and 15 minutes including the walk through. -
Traditional Music of Scotland
Traditional Music of Scotland A Journey to the Musical World of Today Abstract Immigrants from Scotland have been arriving in the States since the early 1600s, bringing with them various aspects of their culture, including music. As different cultures from around Europe and the world mixed with the settled Scots, the music that they played evolved. For my research project, I will investigate the progression of “traditional” Scottish music in the United States, and how it deviates from the progression of the same style of music in Scotland itself, specifically stylistic changes, notational changes, and changes in popular repertoire. I will focus on the relationship of this progression to the interactions of the two countries throughout history. To conduct my research, I will use non-fiction sources on the history of Scottish music, Scottish culture and music in the United States, and Scottish immigration to and interaction with the United States. Beyond material sources, I will contact my former Scottish fiddle teacher, Elke Baker, who conducts extensive study of ethnomusicology relating to Scottish music. In addition, I will gather audio recordings of both Scots and Americans playing “traditional” Scottish music throughout recent history to compare and contrast according to their dates. My background in Scottish music, as well as in other American traditional music styles, will be an aid as well. I will be able to supplement my research with my own collection of music by close examination. To culminate my project, I plan to compose my own piece of Scottish music that incorporates and illustrates the progression of the music from its first landing to the present. -

It is intended to inform health professionals, local authorities and the general public and enable them to improve health services and reduce health inequalities. Key facts • During the years 2011 to 2016, the numbers of children aged between 0 and 4 years has fallen in Buncrana PCT by 21% and in CHO1 by 10% suggesting that the birth rate is declining (similar to the National trend (decrease of 7%) • There has also been a considerable decline in those aged between 20 and 34 years since census 2011, similar to the trend for CHO 1 and Ireland but the rate of change for Ireland has been lower. This data suggests that people in this age group are moving within and emigrating from Ireland • The biggest change in the population from 2011 to 2016 occurred with a 54% increase in the 70-74 age group in Buncrana PCT, compared to a rise of 24% Nationally • 70% of the population in Buncrana scored marginally below average or disadvantaged deprivation levels compared to 48% for Ireland, with 37% living in disadvantage areas in Buncrana ( 23% Nationally) • The age dependent population nationally is 53%, with the figure in Buncrana considerably higher at 60%, due to both higher young (39% in Buncrana PCT compared to 32% for Ireland) and old dependent population of 21% (compared to Nationally, 20%). -
