Thank you for your correspondence of 19 December 2019 where you requested information about: 1. The names of energy suppliers that have formed each year between 2010 and 2019; 2. The names of energy suppliers that have ceased trading each year between 2010 and 2019; and 3. The names of energy suppliers that have merged or been taken over by another supplier each year between 2010 and 2019.

We have considered your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“FOIA”).

We confirm that we hold some of the information you have requested.

Exemption from disclosure

We can confirm that we hold the information you requested under item one above. However, the information is exempt from disclosure under section 21 of FOIA. This is because the information is accessible to you, as it is already in the public domain. You can access a list of all licences granted through our e-Public Register portal: https://epr.ofgem.gov.uk/Document In order to be helpful, we have also attached a version of this information to this letter.

In regards to item three, we do not, by routine, record and store information about supplier mergers and acquisitions. Suppliers tend to announce transactions of this nature, so this information is already in the public domain. We regret that we are unable to direct you to a single source for the information requested.

A copy of the information, which can be disclosed, is enclosed:

1. In annex 1 to this letter we attach a list of all of the electricity and gas licences that were granted between 2010 and 2019. To note, a company may have been granted a licence yet never commenced supply activities – some of the licensees may never have acquired any customers. Please note also that this information is for guidance only and the list is based on the current legal entity name. It may contain some errors and/or may not reflect changes. As a result, there may be slight inconsistencies

Where this is the case the e-Public Register should be taken as accurate. 2. In annex 2 to this letter we attach a list of the suppliers that have ceased trading between 2010 and 2019. We have interpreted this point as a request for a list of those suppliers that have indicated they were ceasing to trade and for whom Ofgem has intervened to ensure continuity of supply for its customers by running a Supplier of Last Resort process.1
