, also referred to as Holy Thursday, commemorates the when shared the meal with his disciples on the night before he was crucified. services are marked by the shadow of Jesus’ betrayal. Two important biblical events are the primary focus of Maundy Thursday:

‘Mandatum’ Before the Passover meal, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. By performing this lowly act of service, Jesus “showed them the full extent of his love”(:1) to love with humility by serving one another and to remember his sacrifice. By his example, Jesus demonstrated how Christians are to love one another through humble service. This ‘mandatum’ (commandment) is the origin of the term Maundy.

The Lord’s Supper During the Passover meal, Jesus took bread and wine and asked his Father to bless it. He broke the bread into pieces, giving it to his disciples and said, “This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then he took the cup of wine, shared it with his disciples and said, “This wine is the token of God’s new covenant to save you— an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you.” Prelude Francis Jackson “Meditation: Love Unknown“ (b. 1917)

Opening Prayer Tessa Armes

Welcome Tessa Armes Welcome to you who call upon the name of Christ. We gather tonight to recall the story of the night Jesus was betrayed. Are you prepared to come to the feast of Jesus, the Christ, whose life was poured out for you? By the grace of God, we are. Are you able to watch with Jesus at prayer in the garden -- indeed, to struggle yourselves to be in unity with God’s will for you? By the grace of God, we are. Then let us praise God, even in this hour of darkness! God of all grace and steadfast love, greatly is your name to be praised in all the earth. Bring us to this night of remembrance with open hearts!

*Hymn 292 Wondrous Love “What Wondrous Love Is This” What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul, what wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul, to bear the dreadful curse for my soul. What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul, what wondrous love is this, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of life to lay aside his crown for my soul, for my soul, to lay aside his crown for my soul. To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing, to God and to the Lamb, I will sing; to God and to the Lamb who is the great , while millions join the theme I will sing, I will sing; while millions join the theme I will sing. And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on; and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be, and through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and through eternity I’ll sing on.

Homily: As You have Seen Me Do Dr. Shera Atkinson

Anthem Ruth Elaine Schram “My King is a Servant” My king lived in splendor, unparalleled splendor; the stars were His footstools, suspended in space. The clouds were His chariot, the light was His garment, but He looked upon this world, and His heart was moved with grace. So He laid aside His crown, and stepped down from His throne, and took upon Himself fragile form of flesh and bone. My King is a servant! He walks among His creations, He names them as His friends. He breaks bread and He blesses it; He dines with His disciples. He pours out His heart, but do they comprehend? He sets the example, the humble example; He bends down before them, to cleanse each one’s feet. In love and in mercy, He washes them with water. In this tender act of service, we see deep humility. From the highest heights above, He stepped down from His throne, and took upon Himself the fragile form of flesh and bone. How can we understand such love, or fathom such compassion and such grace? King of kings, everlasting Lord of lords, almighty God! Scripture Reading: John 13:18-38 Sara Lattimore

*Hymn 616 Hursley “Come Sinners to the Feast” Come, sinners, to the gospel feast, let every soul be Jesus’ guest. Ye need not one be left behind, for God hath bid all humankind. Do not begin to make excuse; ah! do not you his grace refuse; your worldly cares and pleasures leave, and take what Jesus hath to give. Come and partake the gospel feast, be saved from sin, in Jesus rest; O taste the goodness of our God, and eat his flesh and drink his blood. See him set forth before your eyes; behold the bleeding sacrifice; his offered love make haste to embrace, and freely now be saved by grace. Ye who believe his record true shall sup with him and he with you; come to the feast, be saved from sin, for Jesus waits to take you in.

*Hymn 301 Near The Cross “Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross” Jesus, keep me near the cross; there a precious fountain, free to all, a healing stream, flows from Calvary’s mountain. Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever, till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river. Near the cross, a trembling soul, love and mercy found me; there the bright and morning star sheds its beams around me. (Refrain) Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me; help me walk from day to day with its shadow o’er me. (Refrain) Near the cross I’ll watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever, till I reach the golden strand just beyond the river. (Refrain)
