Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. Amen.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME We know the signs of defeat: slumped shoulders, downcast eyes, a chastened demeanor. For those of us sincerely trying to follow Jesus, defeat is inevitable. We commit to spending more time with our kids, but that one project still looms. We resolve to be a good person, but our selfishness strikes again. It can be easy to get discouraged over our moral failures. Today's Gospel is a small, intriguing look at this process in the life of St. Peter. First, Jesus' questions get the Apostles thinking about his true identity. This results in a confession of faith from Peter: "You are the Christ." Eager faith characterizes Peter's relationship with Jesus. First to follow, first to leap out of the boat, and, we know, first to deny. It's the latter tendency that manifests itself later in the Gospel. When Jesus predicts the Passion, "Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him." Jesus' rebuke in turn is stinging. While Peter's caution to Jesus is in private, Jesus intentionally turns back to the others as he declares, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Like Peter, we rarely get it right all the time. Peter understood that Jesus was the Messiah, but he had a false concept of what that Messiah would accomplish. Jesus wants to make sure the rest of the disciples don't follow down the wrong road. The Christian life is a difficult one, as Jesus later tells the crowds. "'Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself.'" Yet the mercy of God is abundant. If we renew our trust and our efforts after a fall, every defeat is transformed into redemptive grace. "Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it."

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSIPRATION FOR THE WEEK Who do you say Jesus is? Some look to Jesus as the reliever of pain and suffering. We want to believe in a God who will take away the discomfort we are feeling and make things better. Frustration and even a lessening of faith can happen when we realize this is not happening. Jesus is the Christ. As the Christ, he is the one who shows us how to keep both the joys and sorrows of life in balance. There is no hopping, skipping, or jumping over suffering. It is a part of life. In addition to the physical pain we are asked to endure, living the Gospel can bring rejection and suffering as well. Jesus the Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. Do we have the desire and faith to follow him?

In addition, class lists and manuals will be distributed, and we will receive a blessing from Fr. Fred as we begin a new year. Family Scripture Reflection: Reading One 50:4-9a In this reading, the prophet describes the servant of God who will lead Israel back to God. The servant will suffer, but God will uphold him. In New Testament, these words take on new meaning for us. Jesus was the suffering servant in Isaiah, the Messiah who was destined to suffer and so enter into his glory. As followers of Jesus, we must follow him in his mission. We will be asked to live our faith with courage and full faithfulness. Questions for reflection and discussion: What is the personal cost of following Jesus Christ? What does it "cost me" to live the Beatitudes and the Commandments, to participate in the liturgy each week or oftener, to seek God in all things (as Saint Ignatius Loyola put it)? How can I "open my ear" to hear God in my life? (from Sadlier) Three Days of Inspiration with Jon Leonetti The Bishop’s Lecture Series, an initiative of the Leadership Institute, featuring Jon Leonetti will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Assumption Parish, 98 Riverside Avenue, Westport, CT 06880. It will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday, October 5 at Queen of Hall, he Catholic Center, 238 Jewett Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. There is no cost for the event. To register, email name, parish and number attending to [email protected] “Mission of the Family” is a talk for families and parents. Parents are the first teachers in the ways of faith. No one is more powerful when it comes to witnessing the power of prayer and the power of God in our lives. But what happens when parents are exhausted and young people are tuned out? Through this talk, parents will learn ways to discover and live discipleship in the family. The talk will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at All Saints School, 139 West Rocks Road, Norwalk, CT. The doors open at 8:45 a.m.; the program begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. Cost: $15 per person or $25 per couple. A continental breakfast will be served. Meet Saint Andrew Kim Taegon Born: August 21, 1821 Died: September 16, 1846 Feast Day: September 20 When Andrew Kim Taegŏn was born, it was against the law in Korea to practice the Catholic faith. Catholics had to go to Mass and learn about Jesus Christ secretly. Missionary priests from traveled through the country in disguise. When Andrew was 15 years old, he escaped from Korea. He wanted to study to become a priest, but there were no seminaries in Korea. He entered the seminary in Macaw, a nearby country. While he was away studying, persecution of Catholics grew stronger in Korea. Andrew’s father was one of the Catholics who was martyred. On August 17, 1845, Andrew was the first native-born Korean to be ordained a priest. In Korea, Andrew began the dangerous work of ministering to the brave community. He spent much of his energy making it possible for other priests and catechists to enter Korea as well. In June of the next year, Andrew was arrested and spent the next three months in prison. The prison was very dirty and overcrowded, and the prisoners were mistreated. While in prison, Andrew wrote letters to his fellow Christians encouraging them to remain true to the faith in spite of the trials and danger facing them. On September 16, 1846, he was executed near Seoul, Korea. He was 26 years old. Andrew Kim Taegŏn was canonized along with 102 Catholics. This group included Korean and French priests and many lay people. What this saint means to us Andrew Kim Taegŏn knew how important it was for Christians to support and encourage one another in their faith. He said, “"Whatever happens, behave in such a way that God will be glorified. . .Be steadfast, and let us meet in Heaven.".
