Annual Report 2010 | 2011 “The network is not viewed as ‘Columbia abroad,’ but, rather, as Columbia embedded in what is emerging as a global community of scholarship.” Ken Prewitt, Vice President for Global Centers A Message from Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah The poet William Butler Yeats once wrote that “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Since 2009, the Columbia University Middle East Research Center (CUMERC) has lit countless fires across Jordan with studies and policy proposals, workshops and internships, seminars, roundtables, and partnerships. In its first months, CUMERC’s purview has been as wide as it has been deep. It has energized the arts, with film and music projects that teach and inspire, as much as entertain. It has helped expand and enrich the work of our Teachers’ Academy, providing training programs and partnerships that have made it a leader in the Arab World. Our young people have had access to internships. Our students and scholars have crossed cultural barriers, as well as disciplinary boundaries, opening themselves to new thinking and horizons. Workshops on conflict resolution in school classrooms, courses on financial securities, partnerships with ecology experts… the list carries on into the fields of social work, family health, child protection, and Arabic language study. From such a small beginning, CUMERC has made an incredible impact to the benefit of Jordan and the region. It is in this spirit of educational exploration that I support CUMERC’s adventure into new fields of research in Jordan. As the future unfolds, I am excited that, together, we will be sparking more fires in the years to come. -

The Muslim Brotherhood; Jabhat al-Islah ("the Reform Front"), led by former prime minister and Director of General Intelligence Department Ahmad Obeidat, and other movements announced their boycott of the January 2013 parliamentary elections. This indicates that these active groups refuse to take part in political games in which they have not formed the rules. It does not, however, indicate that the political regime is in critical condition; in fact, it continues to maintain its fundamental structure through internal and external consensus. Survival first There are three dimensions that states interact in and stipulate the pattern of their conduct. The first is the internal dimension which is centrally embedded in the political system and society. Internal stability depends on the degree of harmony between the priorities of the political system and those of the society. The second is the regional dimension. This denotes the adjacent region (where borders are shared), and the neighbouring region with which the state has interacted with throughout its history. At this level, the priorities are manifested through the establishment of a network of interactions with the ‘adjacent and neighbouring’ dimension to ensure the priorities of the political system and society in the first dimension are attained. Last but not least is the international dimension. -

Annual Report 2009/2010 Letter from the Director November 2010 Dear members of the CUMERC community, Since its launch in March 2009, the Columbia University Middle East Research Center (CUMERC) has embarked on a myriad of initiatives and activities, and has sought to generate the participation of a range of Columbia schools to create opportunities for faculty to engage in onsite research and for students to experience the Middle East firsthand. This endeavor would have never been imaginable if it were not for two individuals with incredible visions for education and the evolving role of academia in today’s global society: Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah and Columbia President Lee Bollinger. I am honored to share our first Annual Report, which describes the foundation that has been built over the past year and a half, and illustrates the Center’s key initiatives to date. Looking ahead, our priorities are to intensify our research programs through the establishment of institutes in several fields, become more regional in our scope, and explore joint programming with our sister centers in Paris, Beijing, Mumbai, and others as they materialize. We are deeply indebted to our hosts, donors and partners. I invite you to read through our Annual Report, and look forward to the Center’s further growth and impact with your support. A Bakhtinian Reading of Contemporary Jordanian Political Humour
Carnivalesque politics and popular resistance: A Bakhtinian reading of contemporary Jordanian political humour Yousef Barahmeh Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Portsmouth School of Area Studies, History, Politics and Literature February 2020 i Abstract This thesis examines contemporary Jordanian political humour in the context of the political history of Jordan and the 2011 Arab Spring revolutions. It applies Mikhail Bakhtin’s mid-20th century theory of carnival and the carnivalesque (folk humour) as a framework for thinking about Jordanian politics and political humour in social media spaces following the Arab Spring. The Bakhtinian approach to humour has predominantly focused on the role of humour as a revolutionary impulse that aims to attack and expose the shortcomings of established political power, as well as to highlight public attitudes towards that power. The analysis undertaken here of Jordanian politics and political humour in Jordanian social media spaces after the Arab Spring found that Bakhtin’s ‘marketplace’ is no longer the streets and material public spaces, but rather the social media spaces. The nature of the carnivals in social media spaces is in many ways just as carnivalesque as the ‘marketplace’ of Bakhtin’s Medieval France, characterised by polyphony, the overturning of social hierarchies and the presence of dialogism (and monologism) and the grotesque. To more fully address the relevance – and some of the limitations – of application of Bakhtin’s ideas about carnival to the Jordanian socio- political context after the Arab Spring, this thesis analyses key political cartoons, satirical articles, comedy sketches, politically satirical videos and internet memes produced by Jordanians from the start of the Arab ii Spring to early 2019. -

India – Jordan Relations India’s relationship with Jordan has always been characterized by warmth and goodwill based on mutual respect. The two countries signed their first bilateral agreement for cooperation and friendly relations in 1947, which was formalised in 1950 when the two countries established full-fledged diplomatic ties. This year the 65th Anniversary of diplomatic relations is being celebrated with large scale cultural activities to enhance people to people exchanges. To promote and facilitate tourism, another “India Road Show” is proposed for October, 2015 along with the 1st Meeting of the JWG on Tourism Cooperation. In November, 2014, Government of India decided to extend e-TV facility to Jordanians. Apart from Media interactions, the GoITO also organized one information and interaction seminar for local tour operators in Amman. To help Jordan in its capacity building efforts 30 ITEC slots have been made available apart from other scholarships under ICCR. During the recently held 9th Session of the India-Jordan Joint Trade and Economic Committee meeting in Amman on 29-30 March, it was, inter alia, agreed to a bilateral trade target of US $ 5 bn by 2020 and holding of annual Indo-Jordan Business Forum. Cooperation in Multilateral Fora Our interaction with Jordan in multilateral fora, particularly under UN’s framework has fostered better understanding on mutual concerns and priorities. Jordan had extended its support for India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the term 2011-12 and India had extended its valuable support to Jordan’s candidature for the seat for the term 2014- 16.
