Curtin University is an innovative, global university known for its high impact research, strong industry partnerships and commitment to preparing students for the jobs of the future.

Since its establishment as the Western Australian Institute of Technology in 1967, it has expanded significantly in terms of student population, degree offerings, research collaborations and global footprint.

The university now has campuses in Western Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Mauritius. Its 56,600 students come from all over the world.

For the past two years, Curtin has been ranked in the top percentile of the world’s tertiary institutions by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. This is the latest milestone in a remarkable rise up the world rankings and is driven mainly by Curtin’s growing research capability.

In astronomy, Curtin researchers are helping increase our understanding of the Universe and our place in it. The Curtin-led Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) is a low-frequency radio telescope in remote Western Australia, helping scientists to observe and characterise the southern skies. The scope of work includes the conditions in Earth’s atmosphere, to storms on the Sun, to the contents of the Milky Way, to the origins of the Universe. Although a major scientific instrument in its own right, the MWA is a precursor to the Square Kilometre Array which will be the most powerful radio telescope ever built.

The Space Science and Technology Centre at Curtin is home to the largest planetary research group in the Southern Hemisphere. The centre has expertise CEDA will be tweeting from this in areas including lunar and planetary impact craters, and comparative event using #SpaceEconomy planetology. It collaborates with world leaders in the space sector including ESA, Join the conversation and follow us JAXA and Lockheed Martin. on Twitter @ceda_news

Curtin’s Desert Fireball Network uncovers mysteries surrounding the origins of the Solar System by studying meteorites, fireballs and their pre-Earth orbits. Digital skyward facing cameras capture pictures of meteors as they fall, while purpose-built computer programs calculate the speed, direction, and potential landing zone so the meteorite can be recovered and analysed. Recently, Curtin researchers have adapted the system to also track satellites, working with NASA in 2018 to track the OSIRIS-Rex spacecraft on its way to the asteroid Bennu.

Curtin University has been a CEDA member since 2012.

Woodside is the pioneer of the LNG industry in Australia and the largest Australian natural gas producer.

With a global portfolio, Woodside is recognised for its world-class capabilities as an integrated upstream supplier of energy. The company is progressing its proposals for an integrated LNG production centre on the Burrup Peninsula in northern Western Australia, leveraging existing facilities to develop the Scarborough and Browse resources through the Woodside-operated Pluto LNG facility and the Karratha Gas Plant.

Technology and innovation are crucial to these growth plans and to Woodside’s daily operations. Under an updated technology strategy, Woodside continues its focus on conventional oil and gas technologies and data-driven breakthroughs while also prioritising carbon management and the development of new energy sources. Woodside is building its own in-house technology capability and drawing on external expertise, including through collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) agency, which has loaned Woodside one of eight Robonaut 2 anthropomorphic systems in the world for a five-year program. The Robonaut is being used to test initial ideas from operators, engineers and maintenance workers to make their tasks safer and more efficient. These ideas are further trialled on our assets, using our own fleet of remotely-operated robots.

As Australia’s premier LNG operator, Woodside produces around 6% of global LNG supply. Across its oil and gas portfolio, Woodside has significant equity interests in high-quality development opportunities in Senegal (SNE), Myanmar, Canada (Kitimat) and Timor-Leste/Australia (Sunrise). A renewed exploration plan takes a focused and opportunistic approach across established, emerging and future growth hubs in Australia, Myanmar, Senegal, Gabon, Peru and Bulgaria.

Woodside Energy has been a CEDA member since 2006.

After the McGowan Labor Government secured an unprecedented 41 Legislative Assembly seats in the March 2017 election, he was appointed the Minister for Water, Fisheries; Forestry; Innovation and ICT; Science.

Prior to his entry into politics Minister Kelly spent 20 years in the union movement protecting the wages and conditions of some of the lowest-paid workers in WA; including education assistants, aged care workers, disability support workers and healthcare workers.

Minister Kelly played a key role in establishing the Bayswater-Noranda Community Bank, the first community bank to established in metropolitan Perth. He was a board member of the bank from its establishment in 2000 to 2017.

As Minister for Science; and Innovation and ICT, the Minister is excited by the opportunities the space sector offers for Western Australia including job creation, economic diversification and scientific advancement.

CEDA's cross- sector membership spans every state and territory and includes more than 780 of Australia's leading businesses, community organisations, government departments and academic institutions.

Membership Organisations join CEDA because CEDA delivers exposure to high level thought leadership, timely briefings on issues of economic importance, access to networking and brand reach through sponsorship and hosting opportunities. In addition to high profile public events, CEDA also delivers regular member only events for employees of member organisations and exclusive Trustee only boardroom briefings for senior executives from member organisations. These provide a unique opportunity for peer-to-peer knowledge exchange and for speakers and attendees to talk candidly on issues.

Research and policy CEDA’s only agenda is to pursue good public policy to progress Australia’s economic and social development. Since 1960 CEDA has produced more than 3000 publications, research reports and articles highlighting emerging issues and directions in a diverse range of policy areas. Research in 2019 will focus on Australia’s long-term budget position, the effects of temporary migration, a survey of Australian businesses on their approach to economic development, and new approaches to addressing entrenched disadvantage.
