Groups have been created for several categories: Group 1. 4-Stroke Motorcycles and ATV Engine Oils Group 2. 2-Stroke Outboard and Personal Watercraft Oils (TC-W3) Group 3. 2-Stroke Motorcycle, ATV, Snowmobile and Personal Watercraft Oils Group 5. 4-Stroke, Gasoline Fueled, Marine Engines Group 6. 4-Stroke, Diesel Fueled, Marine Engines Group 7. 4-Stroke, Snowmobiles These groups will be listed under the Recommended Motor Oil column in the Application guide. Please refer to the following tables when selecting a motor oil from each group by determining the specific requirements of your equipment. GROUP 1 4-STROKE MOTORCYCLE AND ATV ENGINE OILS Select the product that meets the required SAE (viscosity) grade for your specific application. SAE AMSOIL Viscosity Product Product Grade Code Name Comments 10W-30 ASE AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke, Small Engine Oil Can be used in all motorcycle and ATV applications calling for an SAE 10W-30 or straight SAE 30 oil. 0W-40 AFF AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke, Power Sports Oil Can be used in all motorcycle and ATV applications calling for an SAE 0W-40, 5W-40, 10W-40, 20W-40 or straight SAE 40 oil. (Preferred product for all-season ATV use) 10W-40 MCF AMSOIL Advanced Synthetic Motorcycle Oil Can be used in all motorcycle and ATV applications calling for an SAE 10W-40, 15W-40 or straight SAE 40 oil. 20W-50 MCV AMSOIL Advanced Synthetic Mototcycle Oil Can be used in all motorcycle and ATV applications calling for an SAE 15W-40, 20W-50 or straight SAE 50 oil. 60 AHR AMSOIL Super Heavy Weight SAE 60 Can be used in all motorcycle applications calling for Racing Oil an SAE 25W-60 or straight SAE 60 oil. GROUP 2 2-STROKE OUTBOARD AND PERSONAL WATERCRAFT OILS (TC-W3) Select the product that meets the requirements of your equipment. FHWA-HRT-18-039 FEBRUARY 2019 Research, Development, and Technology Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center 6300 Georgetown Pike McLean, VA 22101-2296 FOREWORD The Motorcycle Crash Causation Study, conducted through the Federal Highway Administration Office of Safety Research and Development, produced a wealth of information on the causal factors for motorcycle crashes, and its corresponding Volumes provide perspectives on what crash-countermeasure opportunities can be developed. This study used a crash- and control-case approach developed from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development protocols, which as discussed in this report, has provided insights into more than 1,900 data elements that may be associated with motorcycle-crash causation. The research team produced a final report along with a 14-volume series of supplemental reports that provide an overview of the study and a summary of its observations, the data-collection forms and coding definitions, a tabulation of each data element collected from each form, and selected comparisons with previous studies. It is anticipated that readers will select those Volumes and data elements that provide information of specific interest. This document, Volume 2—Coding Manual, provides the coding conventions used in this study. It provides data that enable the proper interpretation and understanding of the codes assigned to variables of interest during the study. This report will be of interest to individuals involved in traffic safety, safety training, crash and injury reduction, and roadway design and policy making, as well as to motorcycle- and safety-equipment designers, crash investigators and researchers, motorcycle and automotive manufacturers and consumers, roadway users, and human-factors specialists.
