What a wonderful opportunity to connect these groups of researchers and learn from each other. The last conference in 2019, was my first week on the job. It provided an inspiring introduction to the work that you do, and the importance of the science outcomes for informing management and policy. Little did any of us appreciate then the challenges that awaited us. The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on the past Antarctic field season, and I have been impressed with the adaptability and resilience demonstrated by the science community during these times. I would also like to acknowledge the work of our team on the ice in supporting monitoring, staging and research efforts during our reduced 2020/21 season. The pandemic has been disruptive, but science prevails. This week we will hear the latest findings from the Antarctic research programme and New Zealand snow and ice research. We are delighted to support five workshops where scientists, iwi, stakeholders and policy makers will engage on a wide range of focus topics. The management team from Antarctica New Zealand looks forward to sharing the latest news with you on Wednesday afternoon, including details of the Scott Base Redevelopment project. We appreciate your engagement on this very important initiative that will support world class research for decades to come. We also celebrate the achievements of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Institute (NZARI), which came to an end in 2020. This week we will take the opportunity to reflect on the impact this innovative initiative had for the New Zealand’s Antarctic research programme and community, including a special dinner at the Transitional Cathedral dedicated to NZARI. Wishing you a fun and engaging week, reconnecting with your peers, making new connections, and soaking in the positive energy that conferences generate. These global, intergenerational issues demand our attention and collaborative efforts to find solutions. Through fostering interdisciplinary approaches and addressing large, complex questions, New Zealand researchers are enhancing our understanding of the world around us. Weaving mātauranga Māori into Antarctic and Southern Ocean research highlights deep connections between humans and te taiao, and in these times of change, connections are key: with people, with the land, with the sea. Join us to celebrate, connect and collaborate as we navigate these unusual times together. Connecting through Change will showcase the latest findings from New Zealand’s Antarctic research programme. It will highlight the critical importance of translating research discoveries into policy outcomes, and provide an opportunity for researchers, iwi, policy-makers and educators to connect in a way that will inspire, engage and unite us all.
