Every year, dozens of Schools’ Athletic Association provincial championship banners are handed out to Alberta high schools, and thousands of medals to students and coaches. However, those banners only represent a fraction of the student athletes and coaches who dedicate their time and energies towards becoming the best they can be via their involvement in school sport.

On behalf of the ASAA, I congratulate participating student athletes and their coaches for the success they have achieved in making it to this 2016/17 ASAA 2A Boys Volleyball Provincial Championship being hosted by Oilfields High School in Black Diamond, AB.

Significant volunteer time has been committed by your local organizing committee in the year leading up to this championship to make sure that every student athlete, coach and supporter are given the first class treatment. But it does take leaders to make an event like this happen and I would like to recognize and thank event chair Leigh Bretzlaff for taking on the huge task of hosting this championship. I encourage all participants to take a moment to thank the hosts personally for their outstanding efforts.

The ASAA is proud to be associated with student athletes and coaches; people who either are, or will become, leaders in their community. I challenge you to display that leadership by practicing and promoting the highest levels of ethics, integrity, sportsmanship and respect for others throughout this championship. When you win, do so with humility. When you lose, do so with grace. Make every effort to show everyone at the championship that high school athletes show great character at all times.

On behalf of the ASAA, I thank Platinum Partners Alberta Milk and SUBWAY, Gold Partners Morgex Insurance and EntripyShops, and our official suppliers which are listed throughout this championship program. The ongoing support of these corporate partners assist the ASAA in providing a better experience for student athletes across the province. Finally, have the time of your life at this championship; I trust you will take home memories that will live on in your heart and mind for decades to come.

School Name: St. Michael’s/Livingstone High School Zone: South Wild Card Team Name: Dragons School Colors: Red/White/Black Pool: BLACK Coach: Tyler Speelman Asst. Coach: Chet Root Overview The St. Michael's Dragons have had a very strong year. Winning 2 tournaments and placing 2nd in 2 others they have been tough competition throughout the year. Usually a 1A School, St. Michael's School combined with School this year as Lundbreck did not have enough players to field a team. Combining the 2 schools bumped this team to 2A but, the guys have jelled amazingly this season. The boys from Lundbreck have brought talent and a sense of calm to an already talented group from St. Michael's School that competed in the 1A provincial championships last year. The Dragons went undefeated in league and won their post season tournament versus a very talented group from Immanuel Christian School from . Picking up 5 of 6 league all-star selections and adding an MVP to that list has proven to the team, and the fans, that they are skilled and deserve to be in the position they are in. We again had to beat Immanuel Christian School in the semi finals of our zone competition to earn a provincial birth. The final game at zones was very close as it went to a 3rd set but the Dragons were defeated by the St. Mary's Celtics from Taber. Provincials will cap off a very fun and exciting year and hopefully these boys can build on their already fantastic experience to be remembered by them for years. The character on this team is overwhelming as they have shown a large amount of class throughout the season. As this team represents 2 different schools, they will have 2 communities cheering for them and wishing them well. We are looking forward to being at provincials and wish the other teams good luck! We finished in 3/4 in Camrose early in the year. Lost in Finals in Athabasca. Won the consolation in St. Paul. Lost in Final in Lac la Biche. Won our home tournament and lost in final in Cold Lake. We won zones last year also and that experience was great so our vet's know more what to expect this year. We have 3 grade 12's this year so for next year it will be a bit of a turnover but good for our young players to experience Provincials this year. School Colors: Navy & Silver Coach: Amanda Stubbs Overview The St. Joseph Saints from Whitecourt have had a great season with lots of growth, accomplishments and team building. With six returning grade 12 players, 1 returning grade 11 and 5 fresh grade 10 athletes, our team was diversely skilled and determined. Our first two tournaments, one hosted by Regional College and the other in , we ended up making it to the consolation finals and winning. From there we took a first place in Valleyview, second place in Whitecourt at the Hilltop High tournament and a tough loss in semi-finals in Cold Lake to finish our last regular season tournament. Our next goal was to take home our G.C.A.A championship, which we accomplished early November with a two set win over the Mayerthorpe Tigers. With a two week break until North Central 2A zones, our athletes had several practices to get ready to fight for our next goal, winning the zone championship. The Saints went 5-0 in the tournament, once again defeating the Mayerthorpe Tigers in two sets to win the final. Making it to provincials was a proud moment for this group and we are looking forward to each moment of this experience. Team Roster
