    SAM PHILLIPS: PRODUCING THE SOUNDS OF A CHANGING SOUTH OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION How did the recordings Sam Phillips produced at Sun Records, including Elvis Presley’s early work, reflect trends of urbanization and integration in the 1950s American South? OVERVIEW As the U.S. recording industry grew in the first half of the 20th century, so too did the roles of those involved in producing recordings. A “producer” became one or more of many things: talent scout, studio owner, record label owner, repertoire selector, sound engineer, arranger, coach and more. Throughout the 1950s, producer Sam Phillips embodied several of these roles, choosing which artists to record at his Memphis studio and often helping select the material they would play. Phillips released some of the recordings on his Sun Records label, and sold other recordings to labels such as Chess in Chicago. Though Memphis was segregated in the 1950s, Phillips’ studio was not. He was enamored with black music and, as he states in Soundbreaking Episode One, wished to work specifically with black musicians. Phillips attributed his attitude, which was progressive for the time, to his parents’ strong feelings about the need for racial equality and the years he spent working alongside African Americans at a North Alabama farm. Phillips quickly established his studio as a hub of Southern African-American Blues, recording and producing albums for artists such as Howlin’ Wolf and B.B. King and releasing what many consider the first ever Rock and Roll single, “Rocket 88” by Jackie Breston and His Delta Cats. But Phillips was aware of the obstacles African-American artists of the 1950’s faced; regardless of his enthusiasm for their music, he knew those recordings would likely never “crossover” and be heard or bought by most white listeners.

So much so, that it wasn't until the early 1980s that even the most diehard railroaders could finally admit the designation no longer applied. Ever since then, people have wanted to claim another leading industry to characterize the Star City. Fiber optics? (Thanks to a slew of spinoffs from ITT.) Distribution and mail order? (Home Shopping Network, Orvis, etc.) Financial services? (No way to catch up there.) R&D? Hmmm... (Maybe on the medical front.) Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute shows promise. For one thing, it's bigger than just Roanoke proper, with its direct tie-in to Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. But there are other projections and forecasts at play, including economic viability and sustainable employment. We talked to the architects and torchbearers. Now all we need is a song with some catchy lyrics.

He is the author of the prize-winning biography of Elvis Presley titled Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love, as well as a trilogy on American roots music, Sweet Soul Music, Lost Highway and Feel Like Going Home. He also wrote the script for the A&E documentary Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ’n’ Roll, as well as books on Sam Cooke, Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke, and Robert Johnson, Searching for Robert Johnson. The oldest son of Sam Phillips, Knox Phillips is a Memphis music producer and promoter as well as a Rhodes alumnus. Phillips learned music production from his father and guitarist Scotty Moore, and followed in his father’s footsteps as an advocate of Memphis music and musicians. As an engineer, he worked on albums by Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker and Jerry Lee Lewis and he was instrumental in the promotion of important Memphis artists in the 1970s and 1980s including Jim Dickinson, Alex Chilton and Tav Falco. He was a key figure in Memphis securing a chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the organization that produces the Grammy Awards, and in 2007 he was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award by the organization.

    Exploring the Unknown 785 Biographical Appendix A William A. Anders (1933– ) was a career United States Air Force offi cer, although a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Chosen with the third group of astronauts in 1963, he was the backup pilot for Gemini 9 and lunar module pilot for Apollo 8. Anders resigned from NASA and the Air Force (active duty) in September 1969 and became Executive Secretary of the National Aeronautics and Space Council. He joined the Atomic Energy Commission in 1973, and became chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in 1974. He was named U.S. Ambassador to Norway in 1976. Later he worked as a Vice-President of General Electric and then as Senior Executive Vice President-Operations, Textron, Inc. Anders retired as Chief Executive Officer of General Dynamics in 1993, but remained Chairman of the Board. See “Anders, W. Armstrong (1930– ) was the first person to set foot on the Moon on 20 July, 1969. He became an astronaut in 1962 after having served as a test pilot with the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (1955-1958) and NASA (1958– 1962). He flew as command pilot on Gemini 8 in March 1966 and commander of Apollo 11 in July 1969. In 1970 and 1971 he was Deputy Associate Administrator for the office of Advanced Research and Technology, NASA Headquarters. In 1971 he left NASA to become a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and to work as a private consultant.

    “Blue Suede Shoes”—Carl Perkins (1955) Added to the National Registry: 2006 Essay by Mark Bristol with Ken Burke (guest post)* Carl Perkins Raised by sharecroppers near Tiptonville, TN, Carl Perkins grew up on Southern Gospel music both from church and from African-American field hands. Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe's music on the “Grand Ole Opry” gave Carl the urge to play guitar, so his dad made him his first one out of a cigar box, later buying him a used and battered Gene Autry model. Young Perkins learned some chords and licks from “Uncle” John Westbrook, a neighboring sharecropper, songs like “Matchbox Blues” (which he later recorded), and how to connect the sound from the strings to his soul. At 14, he wrote “Let Me Take You To The Movie Magg,” which later convinced Sam Phillips to offer him a Sun Records contract, after Carl begged for a chance to be heard. Carl had been playing the beer joints around Jackson, TN, and on local radio with his brothers Jay and Clayton (and later on with W.S. “Fluke” Holland on drums) when his wife Val heard Elvis' version of “Blue Moon Of Kentucky” on the radio and said to Carl, “That sounds like y'all's music.” “Movie Magg” was released March 19, 1955 on Phillips' Flip label, with the much more country “Turn Around” on the other side becoming a regional success. Johnny Cash had become a Sun artist by then, and he, Elvis and Perkins toured regionally together. Carl's second record “Gone, Gone, Gone” was released on Sun, and also was a regional success, with “Let The Jukebox Keep On Playing” on its flipside.
