Rushing After PSU’s defense gave up a touchdown on the first series of the game, Dawson made an electrifying Alex Kuresa 30-15-1 return of the ensuing kickoff for a tying score. Dawson’s 94-yard return ignited a Viking team that soon took David Jones 25-149-0 the lead, then command, as PSU went on for a 34-14 victory to open conference play. Paris Penn 19-102-2 His kick return for touchdown marked the first time in five years that a PSU player has accomplished the Nate Tago 10-47-1 feat (Nevin Lewis, 2010 vs. Montana). Steven Long 15-20-1 Dawson had one other return in the game of 33 yards. After two games, he has a return average of 50.7 Receiving yards to lead the Big Sky Conference and the nation. Thomas Carter 5-47-0 David Jones 3-20-0 REVERSAL OF FORTUNE HAS VIKINGS RIDING HIGH Paris Penn 2-20-0 Portland State’s fast start to the 2015 football season can be attributed to a reversal of fortune in many Trent Riley 1-50-1 areas. Defense The Vikings opened Big Sky Conference play on Sept. 12 with a convincing 34-14 win at 23rd-ranked Jeremy Lutali 21T-INT-2PBU Idaho State. That came just one week after a 24-17 season-opening win at Washington State - a first-ever John Norcross 17T-TFL victory over a Pac-12 team - that grabbed the attention of the region and the nation. Xavier Coleman 14T-INT-3PBU Now Portland State sits at 2-0 for the first time since 2011. In addition, the Vikings have won back-to- Patrick Onwuasor 13T-TFL-INT back games for the first time since 2013, back-to-back road games since 2011, and beat a ranked team for Savali Talalemotu 10T-2TFL-1.5SK-FF the first time since 2008. AJ Schlatter 9T-2PBU-FR How have they done it? Very simply by playing well in all three facets of the game. Daniel Fusi 9T-2.5TFL-SK-FF The Viking defense has made the biggest reversal of fortune. After allowing 443.2 yards per game and 34.0 points per game last season, the Vikings have dropped those numbers to 326.5 and 15.5 this year WESTERN OREGON WOLVES against a pair of quality opponents. Passing Two games is a small sample size, but the Vikings defense leads the Big Sky in scoring defense (15.5) Trey Shimabukuro 67-112-2-894-7TD and total defense (326.5) defense, while allowing only 2.5 rushing yards per carry. Cornerbacks Aaron Sibley Rushing and Xavier Coleman each have four passes defended and an through two weeks, ranking Joe Harris 43-136-1 second in the league. Daniel Harper 15-49-0 PSU also has a league-high four interceptions, which has led to another reversal of fortune. After Receiving having an abysmal -12 turnover ratio in 2014 (26 giveaways, 14 takeaways) to rank last in the league, the Paul Revis 16-231-1 Vikings lead the Big Sky in turnover ratio so far this year (+5, one giveaway, six takeaways). Wesley Gray 16-209-1 A 94-yard kickoff return for touchdown by sophomore Kahlil Dawson at Idaho State has highlighted Joe Harris 10-86-0 a strong special teams effort by the Vikings through two games. PSU kicker Jonathan Gonzales is 3-3 on Daniel Thomas 8-116-3 field goals, including a 51-yarder on Saturday. Punter/kicker Marcus Kinsella already has five punts inside Keoni Piceno 7-83-0 the 20-yard line and two punts over 50 yards. He kicked off seven times at Idaho State and all seven were Defense touchbacks. ISU had zero return yards on punts and kicks. Shane Kuenzi 26T-1TFL PSU special teams have also recovered a fumble (WSU), blocked a field goal (WSU) and stopped a fake Tyler Johnson 18T-TFL-SK-PBU punt attempt (ISU). The Vikings lead the Big Sky in kickoff return average (34.5). Austin Spencer 17T-PBU-FF While the Vikings have yet to open up their passing game (14-28-1-167-1TD) through two games, the Michael Kluge 17T-4TFL-2.5SK running attack has been as good as ever. PSU rushed for 233 yards at Washington State, 236 yards at Idaho Breeon Moreno 14T-2TFL-2PBU State, and run for five touchdowns. Five different players have made positive contributions, but none have Max Jackson 13T-5TFL-SK eye-popping numbers. Moreover, the Vikings have proven to be devoid of stars, but loaded with talented team-oriented play- ers. Said Viking Coach Bruce Barnum in Pocatello after the Vikings second win: “Our defense, what a great job to stop that offense, are you kidding me?
