The Shofar the Mornings at 11 A.M
Jan/Feb Student Rabbi Ben Freed 2021 Tevet/ Shalom y’all, Shevat/ During January and the first half of February we will cover one of the most exciting stories ever Adar told during our weekly Torah readings. The story of Moses, the prince of Egypt who grew up to 5781 lead the Israelites out of slavery is so captivating that it has been recreated and re-told over and over again. It has been made into iconic movies by Cecil B. DeMille, Dreamworks, and—of course—The Rugrats. As Jews we focus on this story twice each year, once when we read it from the Torah in the winter and again in the spring around the seder table when we celebrate Passover. But there’s one thing about this story that makes it great for movies and TV specials but harder to use as a model for a healthy Jewish community. The problem with the story is that it is basically all about one person. Sure, there are plenty of great supporting characters—Pharoah, Aaron, and Miriam immediately come to mind—but there’s only one lead actor: Moses. To be clear, I don’t entirely blame Moses for this. When God appeared to him at the burning bush he took on the role reluctantly and tried to put someone else in the spotlight. However, once he took over, it’s clear that Moses had a difficult time trusting others and delegating responsibility. Not only does the narrative center around Moses, but he also has a tendency to centralize power and responsibility. -

The Passover Quiz 2020-5780
THE PASSOVER QUIZ 2020-5780 The first Golden Shmura Matzah Award, 1982 This is the 40th year of this acclaimed quiz. Fifty years ago, when I was 20, I went to Israel for the summer after my junior year in college. And though I arranged to meet people along the way, I basically went by myself because going to Israel was my main focus, and my friends were uncertain if they would get there or spend much time there. I worked on a kibbutz for a month and traveled afterwards for 2 weeks. As Beva, who had been there the year before, told me it would be, it was a life altering experience. A few months ago, on the 50th anniversary of my trip I again went to Israel by myself. I joined a group – CAARI- of wonderful active retired individuals. We volunteered, we toured, we met with informed speakers and we ate a lot. This time it was a life reaffirming experience. The future of Judaism and the existence and security of Israel are basically one and the same. Am Yisrael Hai and M’deenat Yisrael Hai. Murray J. Berkowitz There is one correct answer to each question (I think). The person with the most correct answers wins the Golden Shmura Matzah Award. In case of a tie, the winner will be decided by the following tie-breaker: How many times has this author been to Israel and for how many total weeks? Answer key: 1.g. 2.b. 3.f. 4.a. 5.e. 6.f. 7.a. -

But that’s our favorite Christmas not the case in my family. While we see extended family at other times movies. It’s really easy to let the TV ads, be quiet and quaint, but those billboards, and storefronts swallow you whole, but, at the Shuttlesworth Christmas mornings are some of my house, we try to eliminate as much of the material celebration of the favorite memories. season as possible. I don’t share any of this because I think everyone should celebrate For several years, one way we did this was by spending Christmas in the the holidays like we do. Some people love shopping on Black Friday, mountains. During the week around Christmas, we would pack up some immersing themselves in all the sales, and going to Christmas parties camping gear, hide the kids’ presents under some blankets, and just every single night of December. -

479 Nickelodeon Nation: the History, Politics and Economics of America's
Reviews 479 Nickelodeon Nation: The History, Politics and Economics of America’s Only TV Channel for Kids. Edited by Heather Hendershot. New York, NY: New York University Press, 2004. 304 pp. ISBN 0814736521. Heather Hendershot’s anthology Nickelodeon Nation opens with a testament to the strength of Nickelodeon in the children’s media marketplace. Noting that The Rugrats Movie grossed over $100 million, officially qualifying it as a blockbuster, and that the Nickel- odeon television channel (coolly referred to as “Nick”) has repeatedly ranked number one in daytime ratings in the U.S. since 1996, Hendershot establishes Nickelodeon as a pow- erful competitor to Disney with an incredible amount of influence in the realm of children’s culture. Despite Nickelodeon’s growth, in the field of children’s culture and media the major focus of academic scholarship has been the Disney Corporation—and rightly so, given the massive influence of the company in the sphere of children’s culture. But Nickel- odeon has largely been overlooked as a site of study. Hendershot’s anthology fills this void in the literature on the commercialization of children’s culture. It begins by asking how Nickelodeon became so successful. Instead of turning strictly to the usual group of scholars in the fields of children’s culture and television studies, Hendershot is committed to including the perspectives of individuals who have been integral to the formation of Nickelodeon. Industry insiders’ per- sonal accounts of the workings of Nick during its early stages of development are woven through almost the entire anthology. There are two chapters written by industry insiders, one of which is an article by Linda Simensky, a former director of the animation depart- ment at Nick, that gives a behind-the-scenes account of the development of three early ani- mation series during the franchise’s formative years of 1988 to 1991. -

This is Terabithia, where two young friends will discover how to rule their own kingdom, fight the forces of darkness and change their lives forever through the power of the imagination. From Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, the producers of “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and based on one of the most beloved novels of all time, comes an adventurous and moving tale that explores the wonders of friendship, family and fantasy: BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. The story begins with Jess Aarons (JOSH HUTCHERSON), a young outsider on a quest to become the fastest kid in his school. But when the new girl in town, Leslie Burke (ANNASOPHIA ROBB), leaves Jess and everyone else in her dust, Jess’s frustration with her ultimately leads to them becoming fast friends. At first, it seems Jess and Leslie couldn’t be more different—she’s rich, he’s poor, she’s from the city, he’s from the country—but when Leslie begins to open up the world of imagination to Jess, they find they have something amazing to share: the kingdom of Terabithia, a realm of giants, ogres and other enchanted beings that can only be accessed by boldly swinging across a stream in the woods on a strand of rope. -

Hanukkah Trike by Michelle Edwards
Book-Based Family Program The Hanukkah Trike By Michelle Edwards Program Focus Age group: Ages 2-5 Time frame: 45-60 minutes Central value: Hanukkah Theme Nights Synopsis The Hanukkah Trike is a sweet, simple story which is well-suited for children ages- 2-5. Through its bright illustrations and straight-forward text, the book teaches about several customs and traditions of Hanukkah (making latkes, playing dreidel, lighting the menorah). Best of all, the book contains a simple, developmentally-appropriate retelling of the Hanukkah story. Not only does the book provide excellent descriptions of Hanukkah rituals, but it also contains a plot with which young children can easily identify. Young Gabi Greenberg, the heroine of the book, loves the trike which she is given on the first night of Hanukah. When Gabi falls on her first attempt to ride the bike, she becomes quite frightened, and momentarily considers abandoning her quest to master bike riding. With her mother’s help, Gabi recalls the courage and persistence of the Maccabees, and decides to try again. Soon she is “speeding down the sidewalk”, filled with the bravery and joy of the Maccabees.” Goals • Help parents discover more meaningful, values-based methods of celebrating Hanukkah • Allow parents and children to decide upon several theme nights which they would like to try observing in their home Submitted by Vivian Newman – [email protected] "PJ Library" and "PJ Library logo" are registered trademarks of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
