Edition 4 | 2018-2019 WELCOME FROM THE OFFICE OF THE DIRECTORS elcome to Paper Mill Playhouse and to our first letter as the new leadership team of this Wvenerable institution, now celebrating its 80th anniversary season. Mike Stotts recently joined the staff as Managing Director, fresh from an accomplished thirteen- year stint at Hartford Stage Company and after previously spending time at our neighborly theaters George Street Playhouse and the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. Please join the entire Paper Mill family in welcoming Mike when you see him around the theater. We are so pleased to present for you this East Coast premiere of the inventive and poignant new musical Benny & Joon, thoughtfully penned by book writer Kirsten Guenther, composer Nolan Gasser, and lyricist Mindi Dickstein, based on the favorite 1992 film written by Barry Berman and Leslie McNeil. It’s an adventurous, tuneful exploration of complex issues including mental illness, romantic love, and the love between siblings, employing some magic, some ballet, and even some grilled cheese. Our stellar cast includes Tony Award nominee Bryce Pinkham, Paper Mill vets Hannah Elless, Conor Ryan, Paolo Montalban, and Belinda Allyn, and newcomers each with amazing credits of their own, Claybourne Elder, Natalie Toro, Tatiana Wechsler, Colin Hanlon, and Jacob Keith Watson. Jack Cummings III has shepherded this project with the authors for several years and makes his Paper Mill debut directing, with choreography by Scott Rink and music direction by J. Oconer Navarro. Paper Mill recently added four new trustees to our esteemed board: Sofia Cocoziello, Elizabeth Maher, Gail Mandel, and Rita Sallis. Each of these accomplished New Jerseyans brings vigorous passion and business acumen to our already outstanding board of trustees; together our board does heroic work to support the fiscal health of this organization and to make possible our growth and broadening impact. Gaston Leroux's 1911 novel, The Phantom of the Opera, has a considerable number of allusions, some of which are accessible to modern American audiences, like references to Romeo and Juilet. Many of the references, however, are very specific to the operatic world or to other somewhat obscure fields. Knowledge of these allusions would greatly enhance the experience of readers of the novel, and would also contribute to their ability to interpret it. Thus my thesis aims to be helpful to those who read The Phantom of the Opera by providing a set of notes, as it were, to explain the allusions, with an emphasis on the extended allusion of the Palais Garnier and the historical models for the heroine, Christine Daae. Notes on Translations At the time of this writing, three English translations are commercially available of The Phantom of the Opera.

    JOINT BIO: LONG (649 words) Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty are considered the foremost theatrical songwriting team of their generation. They won Broadway's triple crown--Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award—as well as two Grammy nominations for their score of the Broadway musical Ragtime. They received two Academy Award nominations and two Golden Globe nominations for the songs and score of Twentieth Century Fox's animated feature film, Anastasia, which they also adapted into Broadway’s hit musical, Anastasia. In 2014 they received the Oscar Hammerstein Award for Lifetime Achievement, and in 2015 they were inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. They wrote the musical Once On This Island (eight Tony Award nominations, London’s Olivier Award, Best Musical) which premiered on Broadway in 1990.     Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux Gaston Leroux was born in Paris in 1868, and The Life and grew up in Normandy in the north of France. He Career of Gaston became interested in literature at an early age. Leroux He studied law in Paris, but quickly gave up1 this profession to concentrate on journalism. His first real success came when L'Echo de Paris published a series of his poems2 about Parisian actresses. Leroux's father died in 1889, and he inherited3 a fortune4 of one million francs. He immediately5 began to live on a grand scale6, eating in the best restaurants and entertaining7 splendidly8. He spent the whole of his inheritance9 in a period of six months, and then had to consider 10 how he would earn his living. In 1890 he became a court11 reporter for L'Echo de Paris. Soon after, he was given a job on the more prestigious newspaper, Le Matin.
