I open this month's column with some very bad (followed by good) news. The bad news is that over the course of almost 4 years, one of our most trusted staff members was misappropriating Club funds for personal use. This extensive theft amounted to tens of thousands of dollars over time and was very cleverly covered up. This was the result of the Club leadership, including myself, putting too much trust in one individual who essentially violated that trust from the outset. Rest assured new policies and procedures have been implemented with Kevin Witherell, our Financial Secretary, taking the lead to ensure this will never happen again. The good news is that as of May 25, full restitution has been made and we can now move forward focusing solely on making the Club a great place to be members.

Speaking of members, we added quite a few new ones during the Membership Drive on May 12th. At last count, 14 new memberships were added to the Club, many of them families with children. Please join me in welcoming all of our new members!

All in all, May was probably the busiest month I have ever experienced since joining almost 5 years ago. Cinco de Mayo, our typically busy Friday nights, the Membership Drive, Mother's Day and Memorial Day weekend were all incredibly successful and well-attended. Most of all, they were FUN! Thank you to all who volunteered for these great events.

June is looking to be equally busy as we head into summer. Father's Day may be the only major holiday in June, but there are member-hosted events every weekend, which is great to see members taking full advantage of the Club amenities for their personal gatherings. If you are planning to host an event at the Club with a decent size crowd expected (25 or more) please be sure to let our events manager, Sherri Souza-Adams, know so that we can ensure adequate staff and supplies are on hand for you and your guests.

As always, if you see anything that requires repair or maintenance, or just have an idea on some improvements that can be made, please don't hesitate to notify me or any member of the Board.

See you at the Club! Jonathan Schoen, Commodore

Rentals: Snow Skiing club is a new group that will be renting the club. Hopefully we can get them four times a year. Rentals are up!

Patrick repaired the jockey box used for beer primarily for outdoor events. I am donating a cash register to be used for outside and inside such as purchasing raffle tickets, games and social functions.

The new stage we have patiently been waiting for has arrived! This is a portable stage to replace the one in the hall and for outside events. Sherri Souza-Adams

Well, the month of May has been a very fun and profitable one for the Club. Mother’s Day Brunch was a total success, our hats off to chairperson Vickie Kruser and her committee!

The Membership Drive event drew in about 300 plus participants and about 14 new members. Wow! What a day!!! Guests and members enjoyed an unforgettable night.

The Memorial Day weekend started off with a bang! Starting with Mojo Jackson Friday’s entertainment. It was heartwarming to see so many members, on Saturday, working together to put the new stage together, helping with the grilling of hamburgers and hot dogs and also, helping to decorate the Club.

It was a day of members volunteerism at its best. Saturday was a day to remember, so many members and their guests participating in the events of the day, the bar area and patio packed with participants. A very great day at the bar! Sunday was a culmination of hundreds of members enjoying the bands and participating in the horseshoe and corn hole competition. The Galley was opened all day long! Our appreciation to Jeff. Thanks to Kevin Peterson for hosting the first annual and successful Wings Off Competition won by J.R. Reilly. Sunday was our official R and R Day. It was a weekend where so many members pulled together, helping in areas where helped was needed to smoothly and successfully helped make events successful and great fun for everyone. “Cheers to everyone!” Maria Potter -Wood ww w.sdmbbsc.org Financial Secretary ~ Golf Tournament Page 5 5

Summer is here! That means June gloom, and layer up cause it’s sometimes the coldest weather around. As we officially get into the start of summer, we’d like to keep an eye towards the future. Last Labor Day Weekend 2017, the Boat Club celebrated the official end of summer by hosting the Inaugural Mission Bay Masters Golf Tournament. Part of the proceeds benefited Youth Soccer here in the Mission Bay community. It was a festive, highly attended event that was thrown together in about 2 weeks. The after party included a raffle sponsored by Sony Electronics, Live Entertainment with 2 bands, and a Chicken and Rib barbecue that sold out. No food? No worries, our head of the Galley, Jack Porath, had some tasty Prime Rib dinners as menu reinforcements. Thank you Jack, and Chef Jeff for your culinary expertise! So back by popular demand, we are officially announcing the 2 nd Annual Mission Bay Masters Golf Tournament – Sunday September 2 nd , 2018 . What do you need to do? First off, save the date. We will go bigger and better this year, with a shotgun start, hole sponsorships, on course contests with photo galleries and golfing fun you cannot miss. So go find your game at Mission Bay Golf this summer, and come to the club afterwards. Our bartenders are some of the best golf psychologists in the land, and make great hosts for your 19 th hole needs. When called upon, see your Mission Bay Masters. Co-Chairs – Jon Reilly and Marko Penaflor. See you at the Club!
