It may be noted that subsequent to the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme on May 1, 2016 at Ballia in UP; several regional launches took place for the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Bihar, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya to expedite enrolment of more and more of beneficiaries in the scheme. Within a span of little over one year from its launch, more than 3 crore beneficiaries have been released LPG connections under the scheme throughout the country. No wonder PMUY has become synonymous with women empowerment and social inclusion; as it aims to banish household air pollution (HAP) from kitchens, where not only the women, the children will also be saved from the harmful kitchen smoke which contains carcinogens – chemicals that cause malignancies, especially lung cancer. Studies say inhaling this harmful smoke is equivalent to smoking 400 cigarettes per hour.
