It’s almost that time again, Christmas is almost here, many people will already be planning ahead. What presents to buy and who for, what will they eat and who with, and for some most importantly, what will they get. There will be lots of rushing around looking for that perfect gift, or standing in endless queues with baskets overflowing with foods that would normally be passed by. It seems that we take leave of our senses in the run up to Christmas and buy things on impulse, in a sort of panic buying frenzy. Do we really need four boxes of mince pies, or such a large pot of cream. It’s almost verging on a siege mentality, people weighing down their bags and bank balances in an attempt to get everything perfect for that one day. Almost as if, if they don’t have enough, the whole of Christmas will be ruined. Children have been looking through the pages of store catalogues, for more than a few months looking for things they want that in actual fact will amuse them for less than a week. Of course if they don’t get what they want then Christmas will be stressful for everyone. Every year we see on the television the perfect toy advertised from about September that every child ‘must have’ The same newspaper that announces this extra special present, will soon be full of stories of the lengths parents have gone to get it for their child, sad tales of driving to the other side of the country to buy it, or even worse fighting over the last one. Of course during this time of planning will be those who are left off the Christmas list. A casualty of some argument had years ago, the reason forgotten but still unforgiven, who will not be welcome at Christmas. The years roll by faster than the grains of sand running through fingers, but still the hurt goes on. Amid all this emotional upheaval that the season brings, will be school and church nativity plays, where the birth of a baby born over 2000 years ago will be re-enacted, in traditional and contemporary ways. Families, will, with cameras ready, watch with pride as their young people take part in this year’s interpretation of the most important story for all of us. There will be lots and lots of shepherds, more wise men than you can imagine, a terrified looking Mary, and a Joseph who may or may not call for his mum, instead of saying his lines. There may even be a puppet, probably not a donkey, but perhaps a Spiderman. Most importantly there will be a doll right in the middle, a baby Jesus. A few years ago whilst hosting the local school Nativity Play in church, two young boys were escorted into the church by a cross looking teacher. I greeted them, and they were uncharacteristically quiet. They told me that they had been fighting over who would hold the baby Jesus, and had pulled his legs off. The teacher said that they now had to use ‘Barney’ the dinosaur instead, this made them laugh and they were ushered to their seats. It is sad that the baby who was born to bring us joy and peace, the Son of God, was depicted as a purple dinosaur, but even more disturbing that no one thought this was unusual. You see, instead of a purple dinosaur I see a man who unreservedly demonstrates God’s love and compassion, who forgives, accepts and loves each individual who comes to him. I see a man whose moral and ethical teaching has never been improved upon over the course of over 2000 years. I see a man who lives up to those self same standards, and practises what he preaches... even to the point of asking God to forgive his executioners. In the life of this man, Jesus, I see a transformed future – for all of us...life in all its fullness – life in harmony with God. So when you next go to a Nativity play, as you surely will this Christmas, take a peek in the crib and for a moment, look beyond all the rushing about and planning, and see that man.

A very Merry Christmas to you all Love Linda X

Marina Titley (Sec ) My favourite Carol

Last year, we ran a poll to find Herbie’s favourite hymn. Then we sang the top ten you voted for at an evening service. We are doing a similar thing this year but with carols – specifically Advent/Christmas/Epiphany carols. Think what your three favourite carols are – could be ones we all sing, fancy ones the choir sings, busking ones, ones with organ, guitar or unaccompanied singers, ‘old ones, new ones, loved ones neglected ones’, as long as they are the ones that are your personal favourites at this moment in time. Write them below, with your contact details, in case we know several tunes, just one entry each please. Then we shall sing the ten favourites at our 6pm evening service on Sunday 6 th January at St Mary’s – just that, no readings, no sermon. All PP readers are welcome to vote, and to come along to sing the carols. Voting slips by midnight 2 nd January please to Peter at the Taberna or Josie at Herbrandston Post Office

At this moment in time, my favourite three Christmas carols are, in order :

HELLO FROM HAYLEY ello! You will be pleased to know that since September I’ve been employed as the new National Park South West Area Ranger, taking over from Haydn, who has moved to the South. I cover from H Haroldston Chins down to the Marloes and Dale peninsula, and also work with the communities of Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and .

I’m passionate about the outdoors and have been busy getting to know this beautiful corner of Pembrokeshire, and the people who live here, so if you see me, flag me down and say hello.

Before moving to Wales, I was a volunteer ranger with the National Trust in North Devon, and before that I lived and worked in Leeds as an education officer for Groundwork. I moved to Leeds to study Geography after growing up on a farm in Lincolnshire.

I am a point of contact between anyone who lives in or enjoys the Park and the National Park Authority. So if you have any issues, concerns or compliments, feel free to send me an email or give me a ring.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Hayley Barrett, [email protected] 07866771123 Coastlands Local History Group

We are indebted to Owen Vaughan for stepping in at quite short notice and giving our last talk of the year. His talk on “Stories behind some Pembrokeshire Headstones”, looked at some of the Military Headstones in the County. The wealth of information he had at his fingertips made for a most interesting talk. The time scale dealt with was from Waterloo via the Crimea war to those who had fought in Northern Ireland and the Falklands. A salutary tale was the discrepancy he often found between the personal history as “known” by the deceased’s friends and family and the official record. Mr Vaughan’s account of the individual’s military and in some cases civilian history gave an insight into the real person behind the bald facts as noted on the headstone. All in all a most interesting talk by a true enthusiast!

We look forward to welcoming many of you to our Christmas Miscellany Evening on 3 rd December – see advert. We will be saying it then, but for those who cannot make it…. A Very Merry Christmas from all of us at Coastlands Local History Group!

Our next meeting is on Wed. 30 th January 2013, when Peter Crane, an archaeologist with the National Parks, will come and give a talk on the Archaeology of the Coastline, in particular Watery Bay and the excavation done by Time Team. All are welcome. Harriet Bishop

Dale Village Bowls Club

The club has now started its winter bowling program. The weekly sessions take place on Tuesday afternoons starting about 1.00 Normally there are three games of seven ends each, and with a break for tea the session ends about 4.00.

Short mat bowls uses standard outdoor bowls on a 45 foot mat which is marked to simulate a conventional bowling rink. This length creates testing situations around the jack. Competition is friendly and can be very keen. It is a game for all ages. The club has an adequate stock of bowls. Players need only a pair of flat (heel-less) indoor shoes.

The club invites anyone who may be interested to come along for a taster session on a Tuesday afternoon. Additional sessions could be arranged if justified by demand.

Coastlands C.P. School News November 2012 by Katie Chamberlain, Class 3

It’s been a very busy month here at Coastlands C.P. School. All of the school attended the Harvest Service at Marloes Chapel on the 17 th October. We really enjoyed it and the parents said that they did too. The children in Year 6 have been completing Design Technology work with Mr Owen from Milford Haven Comprehensive School. The children who play football and netball have played against Broad Haven School and Roch School and we are getting better. On the 25 th October, the school had a talk from the police about cyber bullying and people who help us. On the 7 th November, the P.T.A. organised a ‘sponsored dribble’ for the school and raised lots of money. The children in Class 3 also went to Crucial Crew and learnt lots about things like first aid. Last but not least are parent evenings. All of the parents were very pleased with their children and everyone hopes that more people will be encouraged to join our school as we are doing lots of things.

Dale WI is on the move! After 75 years in The WI Hut, the time has come to move on.

We, the present members are indebted to Mrs Rind, who, with others including Nurse Bottin, Mrs Lloyd- Phillips and Nurse Powell, founded Dale WI in 1921. Initially meetings were held in Mrs Rind’s house, but when the opportunity came in 1937 to rent a plot from Estates, the WI took it! Mrs Rind organised the erection of the present Hut on the site, initially referring to it as The Room to distinguish it from The Hut, as the forerunner of Coronation Hall was known. On the completion of Coronation Hall in 1953, Dale WI Hut took on its present persona. Dale WI has enjoyed many a good evening in The Hut, meetings, talks, demonstrations, and of course parties…..if the walls could talk the stories they could tell! We are indebted to Dale Castle Estates for making the plot available.

It was not an easy decision to make to move over to The Coronation Hall, but increasingly the lack of facilities was taking its toll on members and membership. So, as from January 2013, Dale WI will be holding its twice monthly meetings in The Jubilee Suite, Coronation Hall, Dale. We are looking forward to making our new home our own, to enable the new walls to absorb some of the good times we expect to have. We would like to extend an invitation to all of you who might have been put off by the old Hut to come and try us on for size.

Our first talk of the year 2013 is from great favourites of Dale WI – Peter and Rosemary Royle, who will be giving us an entertainment, entitled “Red Centre to Kakadu - a wildlife journey through Australia’s Northern Territories”, on Tuesday 22 nd January at 7.30pm. Come along and help us to christen our new venue and enjoy a lively evening of chat, video and music. It will be warm, there are loos, and tea and biccys will be supplied! (Note that this meeting will actually be in the main hall)
