The mechanical automatic engine decompression is engineered for quick and easy starts, with heavy duty anti-vibration mounts between the frame and engine for improved operator comfort. I received it within two days (business days). Attached the How are ratings calculated? tubes, ﬁlled the gas and oil, pumped the primer 7 times, choked it, pulled twice and it started up. I put it on, adjusted the straps and went to see how powerful it was in my yard. I live in a wooded area and had been using electric blowers for the last 15 years. It had been raining two days straight so everything was soaked. This blower took care of all leaves, sticks and acorns with ease. Where as I could never have done this with the electric, the Makita had no problem what so ever. I love the fact that it takes regular gas and oil with the 4 stroke engine. No mistakes mixing gas or keeping it fresh. As a tool that I use about 6 months out of the year, it is invaluable. Makita did an outstanding job making this blower. I could not be happier with it.

I have a 2-acre yard full of oak trees, and I don't feel like doing that by hand rake, and I found out the hard way that Sponsored electric blowers just don't last long enough (and I don't feel like buying 6 batteries to make that feasible).

I'm loving the 4-stroke engine. There are more powerful blowers out there (e.g. Echo PB 8010, Husqvarna 580BTS), but all the ones I could ﬁnd were 2-stroke. As a 4-stroke, this one vibrates less. It's also quieter to the ear (although I still wear hearing protection while using this). I know the sound measurements rate this one as louder than the Echo PB 770T (another 2-stroke), but to my ears, it's much quieter. Probably the frequency of the sounds; I'm not an expert.

Backpack leaf blowers may look more cumbersome than hand-held, however, for extended use (like a larger yard full of leaves...that are wet...going on an uphill incline), I found it easier to use than hand-helds. Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020 Verified Purchase We have 8 trees in our yard, and they all seem to drop their leaves at different times in the Fall. Plus, trying to find the right day to collect the leaves when I'm off work and everything is dry in the yard, is super tricky. And don't even get me started on "neighborhood" leaves which find their way into our yard. Inevitably, I also have to deal with damp leaves which have often worked their way into the lawn. Thus, leaf patrol is a major chore at our home.

Years ago, I initially purchased a Toro corded electric blower/vac rig. The power was good, but not great, and I eventually found dealing with a 100 foot cord (winding/unwinding/managing as you move about the yard) is awful. After about ﬁve years, I got fed up and decided to upgrade to a gas blower. I bought a highly-rated Samsung handheld unit, and I loved not being literally tied down by the cord. The power was decent, but again, not great. I still had to wait for the lawn to dry out, and took a lot of back-and- forth eﬀort to lift up ground-in leaves.

I would recommend the MM4 Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2019 Veriﬁed Purchase This is probably the best backpack blower on the market today. It has an eﬃcient amount of power for its weight. It’s better to adjust because it has four shoulder straps, making it more comfortable to wear. The best part is that it’s a four cycle engine, so I can use standard ethanol-free gasoline in it. I don’t like how the tubes on these aren’t collapsible yet though, they just come piece by piece.

Here this model costs at nearly 30% more than at amazon.co.uk, so this is the reason why I ordered from amazon. The standard delivery took 9 days, which was fine for me. The box came intact and not really as heavy, as the label on it warns about. The box have 2 side handles and is easy to carry. The exciting moment of the unboxing. The unit looks and feels sturdy and well done, the housing obviously is not from the cheap and fragile plastics, nice "electric" colour. The backpack straps are well made, with multiple ways for adjustments, so finally the unit sits well and comfortable on the shoulders and the back. There is a waist strap as well. I'm an enthusiast photographer and my camera backpack with all the bells and whistles put inside is just a little bit lighter than this Makita. The exciting moment of the first firing. I poured some 100 octane petrol in the tank (95 octane is recommended), pressed the fuel primer several times. lifted the choke lever and pulled the rope. The engine fired instantly, but started to cough and died in few seconds. I kept pulling the rope several times, but nothing happened. Then I realised, that I had foRrgeoatdt emno troe release the choke lever down and the engine obviously was flooded with fuel. I

Strap snapped after one or two uses Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 1, 2020 Veriﬁed Purchase Really disappointing, used for probably less than an hour and the stitching on one of the nylon strap has come adrift and strap failed. Machine otherwise seemed excellent. Relatively quiet but wearing ear defenders anyway but blows well, quite comfy and the price is good compared to Stihl or Husqvarna machines. And no need to mix fuel although I use Aspen fuel in 2 and 4 stroke machines.

Will try and get a replacement and then rating will likely improve unless there is another failure of a similar nature. My last experience of Makita UK's service was appalling but as this is through Amazon hopefully will not have the same issues.

Edit: spoke to Amazon, they have arranged a swap of the machine for a new one. Excellent. If no issues with new machine wil give 5 stars. For now upgraded initial 3 to 4

It was a birthday gift to my son-in-law Subtotal who is over the moon. We live on a farm so the old electric powered unit had limited access. $32.49 This Makita unit has clear instructions, started easily, is comfortable to wear and is very quiet running on standby. False advertising Reviewed in Canada on September 30, 2020 Veriﬁed Purchase The product just arrived today. I haven't used it yet, but right oﬀ the bat I noticed that it's made in China. The promotional photographs clearly show that this model is made in Japan, and I based my decision to buy this over the Husqvarna 580BTS very much on the fact that I thought this blower wasn't coming from the land where everything is cheaply made and doesn't last more than a couple of years. Operates at least as well as its gas cousins. About 1/3 of the weight ( - batt), no more storing solvents, mixing oils, no maintenance, no storing for winter, no ﬁlters or plugs. This is replacing my Craftsman 35cc 4 stroke backpack which I just now sold due to the performance of this blower. Battery is cluncky, about the size of 3/4 of a red brick and about the same weight. Easy assembly out of the box. Cruise control and a turbo button for extra umph. Produces noise similar to a 3 gal Shop-Vac. Batteries seem to charge quickly. Bought extra batteries since I purchased the weed whacker, chain saw and now considering the mower. They are a little pricey, about the same as their premium gas cousins. If you have premium combustion tools I personally would use them up before purchasing these types of tool$ to get a better return on inve$tment for you gas tools. Terrible product Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019 Size: 2.5Ah Battery and Charger Style: Backpack Blower Veriﬁed Purchase Do not buy this product! This is the worst device I have ever purchased! It ran for 12 minutes and then the battery died - and this was after they sent me a new battery because the one that came with the blower didn't work at all! I called Greeenworks and they said that 12 minutes of run time is expected and normal! I informed them that their own ad says 70 minutes run time and the customer service rep said that it was "UP to 70 minutes". Ridiculous! When I said that was not what I expected for a $300+ blower and would like to return it they said I would have to contact Amazon to see what kind of resolution they would oﬀer! I will not be purchasing another Greenworks product again.

It blows pine needles and even pine cones, at least into stacks that can be picked up with a rake. It also took on our natural area with ease, where it was able to pick up and move matted patches of decayed leaves and pine needles, again to move into piles for pickup with a rake. The turbo switch is a great help with this, but also uses up the battery a lot faster. I have the 4 amp battery, which is good for a hour or so, depending on how much you use the turbo switch. I do recommend the 4 amp battery over the 2 amp battery if you have a lot of trees; you won't notice the extra weight in the backpack. (I also have the Greenworks lawnmower, so the cost of the battery is shared over these two tools.) Not having to deal with a gasoline engine, especially the 2-cycle models that are common on blowers, is a big plus.

Ergonomically, the backpack is very comfortable once you get it adjusted. The trigger lock is a nice touch, so you don't have to grip the trigger to keep it running. This makes the blower tuRbea ldig mhto arned easy to handle. You feel virtually no vibration, another huge improvement

No more mixing gas and oil, and after a season having to drain what's left. No more yanking on a rope until I'm blue in the face. I bought the Greenworks top lawnmower self-propelled model and was really impressed. I'm 72 and should've know better! After easy assembly and inserting the battery,. I should've stepped outside, but. no. Just like a little kid with a new toy, I just had to turn it on, and then I stupidly set it on turbo! My two Rottweilers hit the doggy door like bullets. Papers, bags, jacket. salt and pepper shakers...anything in the direction I pointed the space gun at went flying. I was so amazed it took a brief moment for me to come to my senses and turn this house destroyer off. To paraphrase from the tv show "Forged in Fire" IT WILL BLOW!!!

Great addition to my battery tool set Reviewed in Canada on November 1, 2020 Size: Tool Only Style: Backpack Blower Veriﬁed Purchase I have the Greenworks 80v snowblower and that massive battery needed another place to play. This blower replaces a gas-ﬁred unit used for light snow, of which we get a lot. So the neater, quieter approach to moving both snow and leaves is a great step forward. The large battery is challenging to install and remove, but otherwise this thing is great. Recommended.

My neighbors gas powered backpack blower is much more powerful. Also when I am blowing snow I get little electrical shocks through to my thumb when I use the button to increase velocity. It is however very adequate for most of the jobs I have for it. I do like the fact that I’m not waking up the entire neighborhood as my neighbor does.

Leaf blowers went cordless a few years ago. Yes, there are still the tried-and-true gas- engine models, but suburban homeowners are getting on board with the advantages this tool oﬀers when it’s powered by batteries. One is that they’re much quieter. Second: There’s no starting strain. Plug in the battery, press the button, and you’re moving leaves. In the amount of time you would have spent to get the gas can, ll the tank, set the choke, and pull the recoil handle, you’re already well into the job.

We gathered a group of promising cordless leaf blowers to assess their power, balance, controls, weight, and comfort. The results of our testing left us with the 10 you see here. But before we get into the reviews, here are some things to keep in mind when buying one for yourself, plus a peek behind the curtain at how we put these leaf blowers through the paces.

Selecting a Blower

All of the leaf blowers below will handle pavement sweeping and a scattering of light leaves. For ankle-deep piles and damp leaves, or to move lawn debris like twigs and nuts, choose one with more voltage and air speed. For anything deeper or if you’re frequently contending with wet leaves, prioritize higher air speed and volume (cubic feet per minute).

Some of these products can go through a couple of batteries in a morning’s work, depending on the size of your yard and the leaf cover. Outt yourself with two batteries and possibly consider a third for really tough conditions. But if your property measures in acres instead of square feet, you may be better served by a gas-engine machine.

How We Tested

To put these leaf blowers through the gamut of testing, we blew leaves and hay oﬀ of grass. We also measured continuous run time with the machines set to maximum power. Then came air speed; getting an accurate reading was tricky. Ultimately, we purchased an MGL Avionics Stratomaster Vega air speed indicator (anemometer) for an airplane, powered it with a 12-volt DC power source, and built our own testing apparatus, gauging the air speed six inches from the tip of the blower tube. We also measured sound levels right at the operator and 75 feet away. Our last portion, the sawdust erosion test, was perhaps the most telling. We taped oﬀ a large trapezoid shape on pavement and covered it with a thin layer of sawdust, then blew the leaf blowers horizontally over the pavement, leaving an impression of the shape of the air stream. After all that, the leaf blowers below came out on top.

More and more, we’re seeing battery-powered equipment that rivals or exceeds the performance of their gas-powered counterparts. This handheld blower is a case in point. We measured airspeed at 134 mph and found, combined with the volume of air (650 cfm, claimed), that it easily blasted leaves from our test area when standing still. Stepping forward while sweeping back and forth cleared the area in seconds. Our sawdust test revealed a focused air stream, with sharp edges, extending beyond the end of our test area. While the run time may seem short, in use we’ve learned that it’s rare to continuously hold down the turbo button, or even the trigger. Run time with the trigger fully depressed extended to nearly 27 minutes. The LB6504 features a dial that allowed us to set and hold the air speed at the lowest setting useful for whatever task we were doing, and using the trigger or turbo button boosted speed when needed, which vastly extended the run time.

This blower makes a lot of sense for people that already own tools in Milwaukee’s M18 Fuel platform, since the batteries are completely interchangeable. It’s available as a “tool only” or with a large, 8.0-Ah battery, which yielded a continuous run time of 14:45 during our testing. The M18 has two ranges indicated by rabbit and turtle icons, each controlled by the same variable speed trigger. It took us longer to clear the leaves in our test area with the Milwaukee, but it was easier to carry, being almost two pounds lighter than any other model we tested. The time it took to move the leaves was explained by the result of our sawdust test. While the shape of the air stream was similar to other handheld blowers, it was a little smaller in both length and width. This isn’t really a fault, but a limitation of the lower voltage compared to other models we tested. So the M18 might not be an ideal blower for large properties with heavy leaf coverage. It is, however, great for clearing out gutters, sweeping the driveway, blasting debris tracked into the garage or leftover from projects, and clearing sidewalks, porches, patios, and small yards. This plain blower doesn’t have the cool futuristic lines of other cordless models, but don’t confuse it with a no-frills pretender. We measured the air speed of Oregon’s consumer level BL 300 at 121 mph, and pushing out 507 cfm (claimed), it’s as capable as some of its gas-powered competitors. Blowing clear our test area was easy—we completed the task in seconds, dispersing the leaves in all directions. We found the slightly shorter blower tube made it easier to sweep back and forth, although sometimes you had to get closer to stubborn debris. We always enjoy learning what the sawdust test will reveal; in this case we could see the tall bulb shape, extended almost the entire length of our area and mimicking that of some of the best blowers we’ve tested. The BL 300 has a variable speed trigger, with a button for a turbo boost. Continuous run time was relatively short, but as we’ve learned, it’s highly unusual to use a blower full blast—in normal use, it may last over an hour. A larger 6.0-Ah battery is also available, which can extend run time by 30 percent.

This Greenworks is the lightest and most compact of the backpack blowers we tested. Its run time was a modest 19 minutes (at full or Turbo power). At that setting, the blower’s air stream forms an eﬀective leaf-moving zone (even if it appeared to be weaker on the outside edges). The machine also scored high marks for its comfortable and highly adjustable shoulder straps, handle comfort, and the 90-degree elbow that connects the impeller housing to the exible blower tube. The elbow permits the blower tube to pivot straight up, so it takes up less space when stored in the garage or shed.

Don’t be misled by this DeWalt’s low air speed. It’s well-shaped and productive. It carves its way through debris, and we found it was easy to use in a sweeping motion to brush leaves aside. Its brief run time, however, suggests that the tool is best used on small patches of leaves or for jobs like construction-site cleanup or sweeping out the garage. Its design for these purposes is clear, judging by the hefty skid plate below the blower housing and battery that should help this tool withstand rough-and-tumble use.

Air speed is on par with many gas-powered handheld blowers, at 127 mph according to our measurements. Air volume is 530 cfm, as claimed by Oregon. In our test area, it scattered leaves in seconds with a couple of sweeps of the blower. When we performed the sawdust test, the bulb shaped pattern was long and wide, with a nice feathered turbulent zone near the end. Unlike other backpack blowers, the BLH120VX uses a backpack (think the type worn to school or on a hike) to house the battery. One advantage is that we could put other things in the pack, rather than our pockets, when using the blower. But it doesn’t sit at when you put it down—we pulled the battery out to stand it up for charging. One of the most notable features is the noise—or rather the lack of it. This is the quietest blower we’ve tested to date.

We liked many things about the XBU02; chief among them is the fact that the blower takes the same 18-volt batteries as other Makita power tools. It also has a comfortable trigger and balance that causes the machine to hang in your hand at the perfect angle. In the leaf test, we found that its focused and somewhat narrow airstream is highly accurate and ideal for cleaning up edges without disturbing adjacent materials. However, it didn’t sweep the area as clean as other, more-powerful machines. If you use it on serious leaf cover, you’ll have some cleanup ahead of you with a mower or maybe a rake to nish the job.

One of the lightest cordless blowers, the BL80L2510 can still legitimately replace a gas- powered unit. With our anemometer, we clocked the air speed at a respectable 127 mph, which falls in the middle of the range for handheld gas blowers. The tube tip is tapered at the end, creating a little narrower, focused air stream, which was evident in the pattern left in our sawdust test. We also noted more precision when blowing leaves out of our test area, which we cleared in seconds, taking just a couple of steps. Run time is fair, considering the 2.5-Ah battery, compared to other models. Greenworks oﬀers 80-volt batteries up to 5.0 Ah, which would signicantly lengthen run time. And if you already have a battery from another tool of theirs, use it and buy just the leaf blower without batteries to save some cash.

Ego’s LB6002 takes the weight of battery out of your hands and makes for a less fatiguing battle with the leaves, a denite plus versus their handheld models. The trade-off is that it’s slightly less maneuverable with the blower tube attached to the backpack frame. In our test area, the 118 mph air stream and volume of air (600 cfm, claimed) effectively cleared the leaves. Our sawdust test showed that the LB6002 had an effective turbulent zone similar to several of the gas-powered handheld units. While run time may seem short, in practice we found a fully depressed trigger or turbo mode wasn’t necessary to get the job done, thus extending the battery life. This same model is also available with a 7.5-Ah battery, which will last 30 to 40 percent longer. During testing we found the padded backpack straps comfortable and easy to quickly adjust. This is a good machine that delivers a wide, nearly perfect symmetrical air pattern with a well-dened boundary that reaches all the way out toward its end, where it ares into consistent branches. That shape and volume contribute to debris-moving efficiency, along with its run time of 47 minutes. It did well in both the leaf test and when we swept the parking lot clean after the sawdust tests. It was the quietest blower, a relief to the testers (and to our neighbors). The machine also gets high marks for comfortable controls, such as its handle and trigger, and its shoulder straps, which are well padded and highly adjustable. The cruise-control lever, however, is difficult to pivot, and the exible blower tube seems a bit too short, also making for a difficult pivoting motion. WATCH NEXT
