From the Editor

Welcome to the May edition and with thanks to Alan Whelan and Lesley Bayes for providing a Mini Biography.

Thanks also to Alan Whelan for instigating an Off-road Championship, and the first results are published in this edition. They are now to be found at the end of the Press Reports along with The Road Race Rankings.

Since the April edition, there has been a big increase in the amount and range of events members have participated in, and thus a bumper edition this month. I have included the complete list of Club Award recipients, and those who were not in attendance at the Bowls Club or a supplementary presentation at the Rugby Club will now receive their certificates in the post.

Committee Meeting Minutes. 18April 2019

Present: David Field (chair), Tony Tomaszewicz, Shaun Tymon, Glenn Shelton, Mick Thompson, Harry Forkin, Ralph Broadley, Alan Whelan, Chris Wade, Hiede Wilson, Simon Valente, Rebecca Dent

Apologies for absence: Melanie Padgham, Dale Hepples

Correspondence: Chris Wade reported that following recent correspondence, the possibility of a seafront parkrun in Scarborough is being pursued. A parkrun at Wykeham Lakes remains on the table, for possible further action.

A proposal for the club to be involved in a distance running research study has been received, however there are concerns about possible GDPR implications.

Notes of last meeting and matters arising: The proposed mindfulness course by Neil Roberts has attracted interest from 26 club members. An announcement about the course potentially taking place will be made in due course.

Finance Report: Rebecca Dent reported that signatories have been established with the club’s bank. An application for internet banking is progressing. A system of the club using a debit and credit card is being considered. The end of year accounts are being produced.

Social events: Eight members signed up for the chocolate making event. An archery event in June and a quiz in July are planned.

Junior section issues: Chris Wade reported that there were no current issues to report.

Safeguarding: David Field and Simon Valente had met with Jo Monty (club welfare officer) and Lyn Clegg to discuss safeguarding issues to be taken forward. A meeting with run leaders to ensure that safeguarding issues are handled correctly will be arranged by Jo and Lyn, on May 9th. It was felt that it would be useful to have a run-leaders meeting in any case to deal with pacing of club runs and other matters.

ClubRun Scheme: Three sessions have been agreed with UKA for a coach to come to club training nights. These will be for all members. The proposed dates are June 13th and 27th and July 11th. McCains 10k and Fun Run: It is not yet clear whether the sponsorship money from McCains has been paid for 2018. There may be issues for the 2019 event relating to counter terrorism measures which the council may have to put in place. Potential additional costs involved in this may be recouped through entry fees and/or sponsorship arrangements. Simon Valente and Melanie Padgham will attend a meeting run by the council in May relating to counter terrorism.

Proposed new track in Scarborough: There was no progress to report on this issue.

Any other business: Presentations: There had been a low attendance of juniors at the 2019 presentation evening, but a junior section will remain for the 2020 event, rather than holding a junior presentation separately. An optimal date will be considered to avoid clashes with significant races and Easter.

Core training sessions: Attendance has reduced (to three people on the last evening). The core sessions will be promoted as much as possible. Organising sessions into seasons (indoors in winter and outdoors in summer) will be considered.

New website: The club’s new website has been looked at in “draft” form. Some modifications are required, and partial payment will be made to the design company involved, pending completion.

Club membership: Renewal of memberships has been progressing since April 1st (170 members at the date of the meeting). Some members had reported that they had difficulty in accessing the application form, but it seemed this had been due to using an incorrect web link.

Club Cross Country event: Mick Thompson reported that the club’s round of the East Yorkshire cross country series will be held on December 8th this year.

Facebook page: Alan Whelan put forward the idea of using specific sections or pages on Facebook to prevent items being missed due to disappearing from view as new ones are posted. Specific interest sections were identified as McCains 10k, offroad/fell running, road racing, walk to run and social events, as examples.

The new website may provide a route to maintaining current issues and specific interest topics in view; this matter will be monitored. It may also be useful to have fewer administrators, to control posted messages. Offroad and fell awards: The rationale for these has been published. Junior awards will be described in general terms as opposed to being centred on best performance.

Next committee meeting: The next SAC committee meeting will be held on May 23, 2019, at Scarborough Rugby Club.

Mini Biographies

Alun Whelan

Years as a runner: I started running when I was at school, originally joining Horwich RMI as a junior where I first experienced fell running. So about 35 years in total.

Best performances: When I hit 40, I decided that I needed to focus on my lifetime running goals. Don’t tell anyone, but I turned to the Dark Side for a couple of years and started .

I managed 10 miles under an hour and 2:56 for the marathon. After meeting both goals, I had set for road events I headed back to the hills. The last goal was going to be somewhat more difficult but ever so more enjoyable. 18 months in preparation I attempted and successfully completed the Bob Graham Round in 22:31.

So that was it – all 3 running goals met and looking for new ones.

Favourite race: Not sure I have a favourite race, but Anniversary Waltz would probably be in my top 5. It’s a couple of hours on the hills in a beautiful part of the lake district and run for good causes. Tea and cake afterwards and as ever a great bunch of people to spend the afternoon with.

Favourite female athlete: Katarina Johnson-Thompson – she was so long in the shadow of Dame Ennis-Hill but has developed into a truly world class athlete.

Favourite male athlete: Has to be Joss Naylor. Met him a few times but only raced against him once. He passed me on the Ennerdale Horseshoe when I severely cramped and couldn’t get off the ground for 20 minutes. He was 70 at the time. Targets: This year the Lyke Wake Challenge has been my focus.

2020 will be my Joss Naylor Round

This year the V50 category is even more competitive and my first goal is working out how to catch Matt Machouki.

Ambitions: Staying injury free and continuing to enjoy whatever comes along.

Funniest moments; 2 things spring to mind – heading up Bowfell on my BGR (30 miles, 12 hours) and one of my supporters’ comments ‘were about half way round now’ – not funny at the time but it brings a smile to my face now.

And at the same event heading up the final major climb (Dale Head 52 miles, 20 hours) and the same chaps son asked me ‘why aren’t you running’?

Lesley Bayes

Years as a runner: I've been a runner for so long that I cannot remember all my achievements over the last 30 odd years.

Favourite races: I joined the Scarborough Harriers Running Club when I was 35 having gained a few pounds having children and was told I would be a veteran. My god, like some old car. Now at the age of 68 my PB's are but a lovely memory and sub 40 for 10k, never believed it would happen, but you can get there if you try.

I think I have run about 6 , 2 in Dublin and 4 London with a PB of 3hrs 45mins and numerous half marathons and 10ks.

Memories: Fondest memories of our running friends from Osterode am Hartz who ran here in relay all the way from Germany and we met them at Staxton to run with them to Scarborough Town Hall for a reception. They ran the York half marathon whilst in Yorkshire and Peppi won a vets prize, which we expected as he was a World Cross Country Champion in Germany We also ran in their home town. The men being very happy with the keg of lager they received as a team prize.

For many years I ran in the North Yorkshire South Durham Cross Country League, but was never fond of cross country and probably remembered best for my numerous falls.

We had some fun weekends in the lakes competing in the Keswick 10-mile race which went around the Derwentwater lake. The men also took part in many fell races and I only tried one short fell race up Latrigg but my quads were stiffer than after a marathon because I had the brakes on all the time coming downhill.

The future: Now I am happy to compete in the Sewerby Park Runs of which I have done 125, as my knees are not up to high mileage these days.

Running and Racing in the French Alps

We are Gary (former British/English fell running champion) and Debbie (UKA Endurance Coach) Devine (Pudsey and Bramley AC). After living in the French Pyrenees for 10 years we have relocated to the Alps where we run a guest house www.alps-haven.com

We thought your members might be interested in experiencing racing/running abroad, in the mountains of the French Alps. Some of your members maybe be daunted by the prospect but rest assured the races are open to everyone. We are both experienced fell/mountain runners who have raced on the continent for many years and are on hand to help with anything and everything i.e race entry/advice/transfers.

Please share our events calendar https://www.alps-haven.com/events-calendar

If you don't fancy racing, we can help with routes aplenty!

Gary will more than likely be racing the majority of the races.
