I am truly thankful for all the personal and professional support I received throughout this time to pursue my project. First, I would like to thank the members of my dissertation committee – Janet Staiger, Tom Schatz, Mary Kearney, Mary Beltrán, and Julia Mickenberg – for their hard work and insightful feedback. Janet Staiger has been instrumental in developing this project since I arrived at the University of Texas in 2011. Like any great mentor, Janet would know when I needed to meet and talk through my idea, and would know when I needed my space to write and work through each part on my own. In our meetings, Janet would facilitate deep conversations about the core issues surrounding my project and keep me focused on the media’s representations of emerging-adults. -

Ironic Blackness As Masculine Cool: Asian American Language and Authenticity on Youtube
Applied Linguistics 2013: 34/5: 592–612 ß Oxford University Press 2013 doi:10.1093/applin/amt023 Advance Access published on 7 October 2013 Ironic Blackness as Masculine Cool: Asian American Language and Authenticity on YouTube ELAINE W. CHUN Downloaded from Department of English Language and Literature, University of South Carolina. E-mail: [email protected] This article examines the cultural significance of cross-racial embodiments of linguistic signs that may be legible as ‘black’ within mainstream US discourses http://applij.oxfordjournals.org/ but, in YouTube’s transnational space, may be subject to alternative interpret- ations. It specifically explores ideologies of race, gender, and authenticity that underlie signs stereotypically linked to symbolic blackness and embodied by a young Chinese American YouTube star named Kevin Wu, whose performance is further complicated by his ironic footing. I argue that although Wu’s stance recognizes certain contradictory values of his racialized performance, his humor never challenges stereotypes of black hypermasculinity. At the same time, my examination of how viewers collaboratively interpret Wu suggests that although they may largely reproduce widely circulating ideologies of race, gender, and at Ondokuz Mayis University on November 1, 2014 linguistic authenticity in the USA, their collaborative praise participates in the reshaping of widely circulating imagery of Asian masculinity in transnational space. INTRODUCTION In the USA, the embodiment of styles ideologically linked to symbolic black- ness by Asian American men carries complex cultural significance. An opti- mistic reading may suggest the possibilities of cross-racial cultural alignment, namely, a shared orientation to African American culture among youth of different races as well as a collaborative challenge to the hegemonic status of whiteness (Cutler 2008). -

YouTube is a video sharing website where people can upload, share, view, and comment on originally created videos. It is an arena where ordinary people with little or no funding can compete with mega corporations on an even playing field to achieve higher viewership and a loyal following. This article takes a look at how a group of amateurs rose from obscurity to become YouTube sensations with literally millions of fans and substantial earnings. Using these YouTubers’ roadmap to success, this article lists practical suggestions for launching a successful YouTube career. © 2012 Liz Lavaveshkul. Published by JICLT. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction If someone told you they could give you a roadmap to a sure-fire way to become world-renown and earn thousands of dollars a year doing what you loved to do through YouTube, would you be interested? If they added that this venture required very little capital and could be launched within a few hours, would you be ready to sign up? Are you ready to become the next YouTube sensation? Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic wand or crystal ball to guarantee success, but a tool exists that provides a window to success. By looking into YouTube’s past and studying YouTube success stories, you can learn from how and why things came to be and make reasonable choices that could favorably affect your future. Founded in February 2005, YouTube is a video sharing website where people can upload, share, view, and comment on originally created videos. -
Subverting Stereotypes and Surpassing Disregard
MKVK04:3 Dissertation Autumn Semester 2012-2013 Department of Communication and Media Subverting stereotypes and surpassing disregard: a case study of Asian Americans' self and group representation on YouTube Author: Cecilia Thulin Supervisor: Tobias Linné Outline Title: Subverting stereotypes and surpassing disregard: a case study of Asian Americans' self and group representation on YouTube Course: Medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap: Kandidatkurs (MKVK04) Author: Cecilia Thulin Supervisor: Tobias Linné Language: English Key Words: YouTube, Asian Americans, Yellow Identity, Community, Racism, Online Racism, Hater Comments, Stereotypes. Abstract: This dissertation explores the development of Asian American YouTube channels. Since the mainstream media are not offering any characters which are a fair representation of Asians, YouTube has become an outlet for Asian Americans to represent themselves. In order to break the general stereotype of a person of Asian descent, these YouTube channels post videos to empower Asians globally. Their success includes billions of views, job opportunities, collaborations, sponsorships and creating a community online which takes their relationship offline. However, this “phenomena” has not evolved without any difficulties. There are ignorant and racist responses since registered users can post comments. The methodological approach is case studies of Wong Fu Productions, NigaHiga, KevJumba and Michelle Phan amongst other North American YouTube channels. Their videos and the movement were perused in order to map out the “phenomena”. These “YouTubers” have gained success yet there is mainstream success to achieve. The dissertation also examines the defect of YouTube; the hater comments and racism online. In conclusion, YouTube has created a space where Asian Americans can themselves represent and break stereotypes. -
