Ongoing increase in anthropogenically assisted non-native species introductions means that understanding the impact of such species on these soil systems is urgent, and essential for developing future risk assessments and management actions. Through comparative baseline characterisation of vegetation, microbes, soil biochemistry, substrate composition and micro-arthropod abundance, this study explores the impacts that have resulted from the 1960s introduction of the invasive chironomid midge Eretmoptera murphyi to Signy Island in maritime Antarctica. The key finding is that where E. murphyi occurs there has been an increase in inorganic nitrogen availability within the nutrient-poor soils. Concentration of available nitrate is increased three- to five-fold relative to uncolonised soils, and that the soil ecosystem may be impacted through changes in the C:N ratio which can influence decomposition rates and the mircoarthropod community. We also measured the levels of inorganic nitrogen in soils influenced by native marine vertebrate aggregations and found the increase in nitrate availability associated with E. murphyi to be similar to that from seals. We suggest that these changes will only have greater impacts over time, potentially benefitting currently limited vascular plant populations and altering plant and invertebrate communities.

    BAS Science Summaries 2018-2019 Antarctic field season BAS Science Summaries 2018-2019 Antarctic field season Introduction This booklet contains the project summaries of field, station and ship-based science that the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is supporting during the forthcoming 2018/19 Antarctic field season. I think it demonstrates once again the breadth and scale of the science that BAS undertakes and supports. For more detailed information about individual projects please contact the Principal Investigators. There is no doubt that 2018/19 is another challenging field season, and it’s one in which the key focus is on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and how this has changed in the past, and may change in the future. Three projects, all logistically big in their scale, are BEAMISH, Thwaites and WACSWAIN. They will advance our understanding of the fragility and complexity of the WAIS and how the ice sheets are responding to environmental change, and contributing to global sea-level rise. Please note that only the PIs and field personnel have been listed in this document. PIs appear in capitals and in brackets if they are not present on site, and Field Guides are indicated with an asterisk. Non-BAS personnel are shown in blue.     HELLO FROM THE KEP WINTERING TEAM Hello from the BAS team wintering at King Edward Point (Fran, Kat, Dee, Kate, Meghan, Charlie, Dave, Martin and Ross). Our island home is a beautiful place of mountains, boating, wildlife, sun, snow, visitors, isolation and history. We have had an interesting season with the wharf project all done and dusted, then Coronavirus. This latter has had repercussions which will last into next season – fewer people will be coming south and Grytviken will be closed to tourists. This letter is intended to give you some useful info to help with your preparations and packing for coming to South Georgia. It contains bits and pieces we found valuable or wish we’d been told prior to heading south. If you have any other queries please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Fran, Station Leader at [email protected]. Looking down onto Grytviken and King Edward Point from the summit of Hodges. Station Life and People One of the things that is quite different about KEP is that it isn’t just a BAS base. In fact BAS manage the station on behalf of SG Government and that means that there are plenty of non BAS people living and working here. We normally have two South Georgia Government Officers and their partners at KEP at any one time. They live in Carse House and Shackleton Villa and cook for themselves. Likewise the Government Build team come down every summer season and live out of Larsen, again they cook for themselves but quite often come over the Everson Bar or for a Saturday night meal.

    SALVESEN RANGE EXPEDITION 2018 This was a ski mountaineering expedition led by Skip Novak and Stephen Venables, based on a five weeks charter aboard Pelagic Australis. Building on the success of the similar 2016 expedition we hoped to make further first ascents in the Salvesen Range. Difficult weather made that impossible. Nevertheless, we managed to repeat the ski traverse from Trolhull to St Andrew’s Bay, while members of the boat party made other excursions ashore along the north coast. We motored through Bird Sound to Right Whale Bay, then continued to KEP, for a briefing with Paula the Government Officer, before tying up at Grytviken just after dark. 15 September A welcome ‘faff’ day during bad weather at Grytviken, sorting gear, adjusting skis and visiting the museum. Stephen Reid, the last minute recruit to the team, endeared himself by cooking an excellent cottage pie and then producing a large box of Kendal fudge and even larger bottle of Cragganmore single malt.
