bs_bs_banner INCLUSIVE EDUCATION IN AUSTRALIA Inclusive education in Australia: rhetoric, reality and the road ahead JOANNA ANDERSON and CHRISTOPHER BOYLE Inclusive education (IE) is a term that has been part of the educational discourse in Australia for almost two decades. While there is no overarching definition under which IE operates in that country, it is accepted that the meaning behind the term has shifted from being exclusively about students with a disability to now encompassing the delivery of a high-quality edu- cation to all students. The public education system is carrying the burden of an increasingly diverse student population (Gonski et al., 2011), and as such, each of the eight educational jurisdictions responsible for the schools within their borders have developed policies and increased funding levels in the name of IE (Graham, in press). Despite this, there are currently no standards or guidelines provided at the state or federal level to measure the success (or not) of IE practices within Australian educational sectors. This article aims to do just that, by providing a ‘report card’ on IE in Australia. An extensive review of the current literature and related educational policies and reports was conducted, and Loreman’s (2014) three guides for mea- suring IE – student participation, student achievement and post-school options – were adopted to evaluate the performance of Australia’s public education system. The findings indicate that, despite operating under the same national legislative acts, the eight educational jurisdictions in Australia are managing and enacting IE in different ways, leading to inconsistent levels of access and educational outcomes for students. -

Lung Cancer Screening enquiry – consultation paper On 1 August 2019, the Minister for Health, the Hon. Greg Hunt MP, invited Cancer Australia to conduct an enquiry into the prospects, process and delivery of a national lung cancer screening program for people at high risk of lung cancer in Australia. Cancer Australia is seeking input and submissions from all Australians with an interest in lung cancer to help inform the enquiry. Consultation paper This consultation paper is for stakeholders who wish to provide input to the Lung Cancer Screening enquiry (the enquiry) through the Lung Cancer Screening enquiry Consultation Hub. It includes information about why the enquiry is being held, describes the policy context and provides an overview of the proposed approach to the enquiry and the issues under consideration in design of a possible national lung cancer screening program for Australia. Why is the enquiry being held? The enquiry is being held to investigate the feasibility of a national lung cancer screening program for people at high risk of lung cancer in Australia. Cancer in Australia 2000 The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare is Australia’s national health and welfare statistics and information agency. The Institute’s mission is Better health and wellbeing for Australians through better health and welfare statistics and information. The Australasian Association of Cancer Registries (AACR) is a collaborative body representing state and territory cancer registries in Australia and New Zealand. Most are members of the International Association of Cancer Registries. The AACR was formed in November 1982 to provide a formal mechanism for promoting uniformity of collection, classification and collation of cancer data. The purposes of the AACR are: S to provide a continuing framework for the development of population-based cancer registration in Australia and New Zealand; S to facilitate the exchange of scientific and technical information between cancer registries and to promote standardisation in the collection and classification of cancer data; S to facilitate cancer research both nationally and internationally; and S to facilitate the dissemination of cancer information.
