20th Anniversary Bull Ride Spectacular Rusty, Helen Trustum, Motoring & much more Fourteenth Edition Well another issue down and we've already started on Issue 15. We at the Heartland office have been busy planning not only the next issue but what's coming up in all issues for 2018. We recently had a gent come in to our office to talk about grammatical and spelling in some of our stories, in all of the issues he has been the only one to say something. Now, to clear things up. We have people write in stories to us, they write from experiences and from the heart, we don't touch them up or make them sound better. Lots of highs and lows this month. Sharon and I were nominated for Richmond Valley Councils Day Citizen of the Year for 2018, definitely a high and we were very honoured to be nominated. We have a new writer on board with us, Michelle is great to work with and you will be reading many of her stories in this issue and future issues. Michelle joins Sharon, Mart and myself and the Heartland family, so a BIG welcome to Michelle. Sharon and I got to meet the cast of Mrs Browns Boys whilst they were touring Australia and we'll be bring this story in a coming issue. We've been doing a bit of travel between magazines and will be bringing you a bit of our experiences and reviewing everything from cruising on P & O's newest ship to camping on Rainbow Beach. We have many big plans for 2018 and Heartland Magazine will be growing from strength to strength. Thank you to our Advertisers in Heartland Magazine, for always being there and to all of our readers if you need a good business or trade look through each issue of Heartland and use the businesses that advertise in it and tell them you saw them in Heartland Magazine. The lows. A lot has been written about the loss of Malcolm Wallis in the past month and we are lost for words at Malcolms passing. Malcolm was a good friend to both Sharon and I from our days at Kyogle High to his passing, he had a vision for his town and loved his Kyogle. I loved catching up with Malcolm and listening to his stories, his love of his family, his EH Holden and Kyogle, we will miss him very much. Our sincerest condolences to Malcolms family. Once again thank you to all of our readers. Sharon & Jeff

Daniel, originally from Yass, ACT described the city as 'very busy' and said "Casino drew him in." The sense of community was not something he could pass up and this was the perfect place to settle down and begin his career. When asked more about the sense of community he went on to describe that community isn't just a place of hustle and bustle nor is it a place where you live in isolation but in the company of other people who you cross paths with regularly. A place where you share some values and interests and you interact regularly and people know your name and will stop you in the Daniel Busch supermarket for a chat! Daniel enjoys working with people and cannot believe how kind people have been to him thus far. His family are close by on the Gold Coast which is an ideal travel time to go and see them on the weekends. However, Daniel has a keen interest in tennis, piano and hiking and enjoys volunteering and getting involved in community events and is on the lookout to get involved in some of these hobbies shortly. Joel Williams is an Oral Health Therapist who graduated from Griffith University in 2010 and moved to Melbourne and worked there for 5 years in a few different Clinics mainly with gum disease and therapy (children's work) and then decided that it was time for a career change which he decided to do last year. This has seen him go towards a move into Osteopathy at Southern Cross University completing his first year in 2017. Greg has taken him on board for one day a week whilst he is studying which has been amazing, Joel used to work one day a week in Corporal Dental whilst in Melbourne and the most obvious difference is Greg and the staff are so passionate about not only what they do but first and foremost the patient care comes first and it is about how well you take care of the patient. Which is exactly what dental work should be about, which is why Joel fell in love with working at this practice. The team at Casino Centre Street Dental can provide many treatment and care options for you including but not limited to Maintenance Appointments, White Fillings, preventative strategies, Dental Sealants, Cosmetic Dentistry, Teeth Whitening, Smile Design and Reconstruction, Children's Dentistry, Endodontics-Root Canal Therapy, Periodontics, Crowns and Bridges, Implant Therapy, Orthodontics, TMJ Jaw pain, Mouth Guards, Dentures, Emergency Care. There is also the option of payment plans which you can enquire about with one of the friendly members of staff upon Joel Williams arrival or over the phone prior to booking. A meaningful life is not about being rich, being popular, being highly educated or being perfect...it is about being real, being humble, being strong and being able to share ourselves and touch the lives of others. To be a part of a community where we help inspire, challenge and encourage. After speaking with Greg and his team I felt that there was a sense of purpose and meaning to what they are bringing to Dentistry in Casino and as Daniel and I were finishing our conversation he said to me that he always thinks that if "I do right by others, others will do right by me." Welcome to Casino Daniel, we wish you all the best in your career and settling into the Northern Rivers. Bookings available by going to the website or by phoning our friendly reception staff.

It served as the starting point for measurement of distances for all the roads leading to the cities of the Byzantine Empire, and had the same function as the Milliarium Aureum of Ancient Rome. The Milion survived intact until at least the late 15th century. Its fragments were discovered again in the late 1960s. A fragment is re-erected as a pillar. Post-Medieval Europe In Europe, the distance measured typically starts at specified point within a city or town, as many roads were named for the towns at either end. For example, in London, United Kingdom, a plaque near the Eleanor cross at Charing Cross is the reference point from which distances from London to other towns and cities are measured. In the UK, milestones are especially associated with former Turnpike roads. The British built many milestones on the island of Malta. They consisted of large slabs of local hard rock and they were engraved with the distance to or from a particular location. Many of these were defaced in World War II to disorientate forces in a potential invasion. Despite this, a very small number of milestones still exist undefaced, and one of these is now in the Malta at War Museum.

Modern Day Highways The historical term milestone is still used today, even though the "stones" are typically metal highway location markers and in most countries use kilometres and metres rather miles and yards. Also found today are more closely spaced signs containing fractional numbers, and signs along railways, beaches and canals. Australia Metrication in Australia caused the former mile markers to be gradually replaced with 10 km markers on highways and country roads, and even these have been removed from most major highways with distances to several towns ahead being shown on signboards. Some mile markers are retained as curiosities.

Remember the Silent cop? A silent cop, also referred to as a "sleeping policeman" or a "traffic dome", is a traffic management device formerly widely used in Australia. It consisted of a metal or concrete dome, about 400 mm (16 in) wide and about 125 mm (5 in) tall, embedded in the road surface. They were usually painted yellow and often decorated with retro- reflective glass beads or "cats eyes". The name has its origins from the Northern Beaches area of Sydney and was derived from the early days of motoring when policemen would be deployed at busy street corners to direct traffic, before traffic signals became widespread. Silent cops were placed in the middle of street intersections at cross roads, and turning drivers were expected to drive around them when turning right. They were also placed in the centre of the terminating street at T-intersections to force drivers turning in or out of the street to be on the correct side of the road rather than cut the corner. The use of "silent cops" has been phased out in Australia, due to changes in the recommended method of performing turns, and the hazard they posed to motorcyclists and pedestrians. Do you remember hitting these?

CHANGES TO CASINO ENGINEERING After nearly 40 years, Ken has decided it is time for him to slow down a little and enjoy his other interests, such as farming and family. Long time employees Scott and Angela Johnston have purchased the business and will continue to offer the same products and services and will be adding a service truck at the end of February. Ken will still be supporting Scott and Angela within the business for some time into the future. Should you have any concerns or questions please contact Ken, Scott or Angela to discuss phone 6662 3855 Grow an Australian native plant, by doing this we will also be helping to combat the global warming, along with enhancing the look of our homes and gardens. There are hundreds of Australian Native plants, that have now been cultivated so you can grow them, including Callistemon, Grevilleas, Melaleucas, Eucalypts, Kangaroo Paws and Syzygiums, also a huge selection of rare rainforest trees which prefer to grow in rainforest conditions, but many of them will grow in your garden or lawn, making wonderful specimen and shade trees, they will not grow as large as if they were in there ideal rainforest conditions. A great small tree or large shrub is the Buckinghamia or Ivory curl flower with its beautiful cream bottlebrush flowers which smell like caramel, it is also a spectacular specimen or small feature tree for your garden. The main job to do this month is to keep the dreaded weeds under control, or before you know it they will grow 2 feet high and be seeding everywhere, I know because this nearly happened to me with the dreaded “Farmers Friends”, It does not matter if you poison or just pull out the weeds, you then need to mulch heavily, my grandma used to say 1 years seeding is 7 years weeding, I think this is true. You can also prepare any garden beds that are now dormant for your winter crops of vegetables and flowers by adding loads of compost and animal manure, so it will be starting to break down, before you actually plant, and remember if you have a problem with cats in your garden that the best manure is the Alpaca Poo and it does help keep the cats away, according to our customers who have tried it. Also make sure you allow time to trim or prune any of your hedges to keep them looking great, depending what type of plants they are, if you are not careful they will get out of hand in no time and then when you hedge them they will look bare and straggly, it is a better idea to trim every month or two than every five or six months to keep them looking neat and tidy just like you wanted them to look.
