Ramapo Baseball - 3 20032003 BB AA SS EE BB AA LL LL SEASON OUTLOOK Ramapo baseball brings a fresh, young, talented, and confident group of players into the 2003 season. Under the leadership of Head Coach Rich Martin and his staff, which consists of Victor Rosario, Peter Breihof, Jan Koslowsky, and Dave Kolze, the Roadrunners look into 2003 with one thing in mind, the playoffs. After a .500 season last year, ending with a 20-20 overall record, Ramapo baseball looks to bring home a championship.

The team returns 12 of last year’s players, and brings on a new generation of 18 with heart, determination, and the drive to succeed at Ramapo. First base will feature the classic platoon system with lefty hitter, Doug Meier, starting against right hand- ed pitchers, while right handed hitter, Dave Winans, will start against southpaws. Second base should be a dog fight all sea- son between sophomore Ryan Paxton and Mercer County Community College transfer, Keith Guthrie. Mike Lallis, one season after transfering from Montclair State, will become the Roadrunners starting shortstop. Promising freshman, Brad Szatkiewicz, has won the third base job and will bat in the middle of the line-up while Jon Allen, Anthony Turano, Josh Epstein, and Mark Malyso round out the infield crew. Last years freshman hitting sensation, Joe Rivisto, will return to catching duties after arm surgery and will be backed up by rookie Mike Jakupcionis.

The outfield constitutes the strongest component of this years Roadrunner team. Ramon Diaz, a transfer from Old Westbury, will bat 4th and play center field. He is a player with a probable future in professional baseball. #3 batter, Doug Aday, will move from third base to his more natural position of left field. Speedy newcomer, Stewart Goodwin, a transfer from Queens College, will share time with last year’s “Rookie of the Year”, Aaron Eyler. Sophomore Jon Lopez, a young Ray Diaz clone, rounds out this outstanding out field unit.

As with any baseball team on any level, pitching is the most important part of any ball club. Ramapo has improved dramatically in this all important category. Newcomers, Pat Dougherty, a transfer from Iona College, and Pat Tuthill, a transfer from Hagerstown Community College, will add a much needed spark to the pitching staff which is led by starter Scott Joffe, (coming off Tommy John surgery), and reliever Brian Bendel. John Franken will round out the Roadrunner pitching staff along with tal- ented freshman, Chris Scudilla. Joe Lambert, a transfer from Concordia College, and Owen Drummond, a transfer from Old Westbury, will bolster the short relief. Much improved sophomore, Steve Bochicchio, rookies Ben Mazza, Mike Leighton, Marco Caban, and junior transfer Frank Picinic, will also share time on the mound.

The Roadrunners have the talent, they have the heart, and they have the drive to succeed. Look out for Ramapo this year!
