Er hat dem afrikanischen Schlagzeuger Tony Allen sogar ein Lied gewidmet. Im Song “Music is my radar” von Blur aus dem Jahr 2000 heißt es im Text: “Tony Allen gets me – he really gets me dancin’”: Tony Allen bringt mich echt zum Tanzen! 1. Andere Rockstars gaben sich ähnlich enthusiastisch. Für sie ist Tony Allen - wie Brian Eno es ausdrückt - “wahrscheinlich der größte Schlagzeuger, der je gelebt hat.” 2. Die Strömung war ursprünglich in Nigeria Anfang der 70er Jahre entstanden und verband westliche Rocksounds mit afrikanischen Rhythmen. Zusammen mit Fela Kuti hat Tony Allen den Afrobeat erfunden, der inzwischen zu einem globalen Phänomen geworden ist. 2. Musik Kompon.: Titel: Secret Agent Interpret: Tony Allen Dauer: bis Ende spielen (5:17) Der Erfolg ist Tony Allen nicht in den Schoß gefallen. Für die Anerkennung musste er hart und lange arbeiten. Durststrecken gab es viele. Dann war Durchhaltevermögen gefragt. Das fing schon im Elternhaus an. Seine Mutter war strikt dagegen, als er Musiker werden wollte, einen Beruf, den sie für schlimmer als betteln hielt. 4 Allerdings lief es anfangs auch nicht besonders gut. Tony Allen war in Jazz vernarrt, doch dafür gab es in Lagos, der früheren Hauptstadt Nigerias, kein Publikum. Jazz war eine Hungerkunst! Damals traf Allen Fela Kulti zum ersten Mal. 1. O-Ton Tony Allen Playing Jazz with Fela (0.35) „Before I met Fela I’ve been playing jazz with different bands for four years. He was looking for a jazz drummer who could play jazz with him. He never was satisfied with the other drummers. And somebody told him: The was a good drummer, and that was me. So he invited me and I went to meet him. That was it: You know how to play jazz? Yes! Okay! That was it. For the first year it was jazz, I was playing.“ Übersetzung: „Bevor ich Fela traf, hatte ich vier Jahre lang Jazz mit anderen Bands gespielt. Fela suchte einen Trommler. Mit den vorherigen Schlagzeugern war er nicht zufrieden. Jemand erzählt ihm von mir und dass ich gut spielen könne. Er lud mich ein, fragte mich, ob ich Jazz spielen kann. ‘Klar!’ sagte ich. Das wars! Das erste Jahr haben wir nur Jazz gespielt.“ Unlängst hat sich Tony Allen musikalisch an seine frühen Jahre zurück erinnert. Damals als er sich als Jazzdrummer versuchte und der Schlagzeuger Art Blakey sein Vorbild war. „A Tribute to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers“ heißt die Platte aus dem 2017, „The Drum Thunder Suite“ das Stück. 3. Track Dauer: bei 3:10 ausblenden 5 Um finanziell über die Runden zu kommen, heuerte Tony Allen damals in Lagos gelegentlich bei einer der populären Highlife-Bands an oder arbeitete als Elektriker. Erst als er 1964 Fela Kuti traf und Mitglied in dessen Gruppe Koola Lobitos (Aussprache: Kuhla Lobitos) wurde, bekam seine Karriere eine Richtung: Die Band verschmoß amerikanischen Jazz mit Highlife, dem damals populärsten Tanzmusikstil Westafrikas. 2. O-Ton Tony Allen Something new Afrobeat (0:13) „Afrobeat was a creation of Fela and me, because Fela was writing in different ways from the other bandleaders. Something new! Creating. Track Dauer: bei 2:30 ausblenden Fela Ransome-Kuti stammte aus einer Familie der schwarzen Mittelschicht von Nigeria – gebildete Leute, politisch engagiert. Sein Großvater war ein berühmter Komponist, sein Vater Gewerkschaftsvorsitzender und seine Mutter eine prominente Frauen- Aktivistin. 6 Ende der 1950er Jahre ging Kuti zum Musikstudium nach London. Er begeisterte sich für Jazz, gründete seine eigenen Combo und war fasziniert von den Klängen, die mit Chuck Berry und Little Richard über den Atlantik kamen. Zurück in Nigeria gründete Fela Kuti zuerst eine Jazzband. Ein Engagement in den USA gab Hoffnung, endete jedoch im Desaster. Immerhin trafen sie auf der US-Tour ein paar Mitglieder der Band von James Brown, die ihnen empfahlen, ihre Musik auf das Wesentliche zu reduzieren: Rhythmus und Melodie! Sonst nichts! Schluß mit cleveren Jazzakkorden! Simpel, klar und voller Energie sollten die Songs sein - mitreißende Tanzmusik! 5. Track Dauer: 2.20 min ausblenden Im 19. Jahrhundert war Afrika durch den Kolonialismus unter westliche Herrschaft geraten. Mit dem Militär und der christlichen Mission kam die westliche Kultur auf den Kontinent. Blaskapellen und Instrumente aus Europa und den USA wie Gitarren, Banjos und Concertinas fassten Fuß. Musikalische Stile entstanden, in denen sich europäische und afrikanische Traditionen mischten. In den sechziger Jahren brachte die neugewonnene Unabhängigkeit in vielen afrikanischen Staaten ein neues Selbstbewußtsein hervor. Musiker wandten sich wieder den eigenen Traditionen zu. Nur anglo-amerikanische Popmusik zu kopieren, war nicht mehr gefragt. In Fela Kuti’s Band entwickelte Tony Allen einen neuartigen Trommelstil, indem er die komplexen afrikanischen Rhythmen aufs Jazzschlagzeugspiel übertrug. 7 3. O-Ton Tony Allen Drums (1:10) „What it means to me: it’s my instrument and what I like to play. This is what I chose as my own instrument. From all the other instruments I’d like to play the drums. It’s the only instrument that I can express my feeling. As small I was listening to different rhythms in the country. You know, we have a lot of different rhythms of ethnic groups. I was growing up with that. But I was growing up with a lot of styles in my head. So when I chose the instrument drums I chose it because I had good drummers in front of me, but I thought it could be played better than what I was watching. I was ment for that to just discover something that none of these drummers in my country have ever discovered.“ Übersetzung: „Das Schlagzeug ist mein Instrument, weil ich mich damit ausdrücken kann – meine Gefühle. Als ich klein war, hörte ich all diese verschiedenen Rhythmen der unterschiedlichen Volksgruppen von Nigeria. Damit wuchs ich auf mit all diesen Musikstilen im Kopf. Es gab viele gute Trommler, die meine Vorbilder waren, aber als ich ihnen zuschaute, dachte ich: ‘Das kann ich besser!’ Ich war dafür bestimmt etwas zu entdecken, dass all die anderen Trommler noch nicht entdeckt hatten.“ Dieses Etwas war der Afrobeat, der die beliebte Highlife-Musik bald an Popularität übertraf. Im Afrobeat floss vieles zusammen, was damals in der Luft lag: amerikanische Soulmusik und Funk, auch Jazz, die einheimische Trommelmusik und die Gesänge der Yoruba, psychedelischer Rock, sowie die populären westafrikanischen Stile Highlife und Juju. (Aussprache:Tschutschu) Aus all diesen Einflüssen formten Fela Kuti und sein Schlagzeuger Tony Allen einen neuen aufregenden Sound, der mächtig abging: Afrobeat! 6. She was an only child and grew up with her male cousins, including Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, and late Beko Ransome-Kuti, all of whom were activists. Today, she is the matriarch of the Ransome-Kuti family. Ransome-Kuti was educated in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria, where she earned her degrees in business management, aesthetics, counseling, and human resources management. She was involved in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. In addition to walking out with other civil society organizers, she became so frustrated with the late military dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, that she mounted increased pressure on him. She wrote to the Queen of England and British government threatening to return the MBE honor awarded to her late father if Britain continued to stay neutral. She was arrested and sent to prison on her way to attend the Beijing Women’s Conference (1995). Ransome-Kuti founded the Nigeria Network of NGOs, an umbrella organization that coordinates and regulates the activities of NGOs in Nigeria. She once ran Girl Watch, an organization that focused on educating young Nigerian girls from low socio- economic backgrounds.
