MYRTLE LEONIA LUCAS LEWIS

December 5, 1922 -December 4, 1997

North End Missionary Baptist Church Rocky Mount, North Carolina Dr. Elbert Lee, Pastor Officiating Tuesday, December 9, 1997 1:00 p.m.

------~------THIS WAS YOUR LIFE, MYRTLE! (Adapted from a Retirement Tribute)

For many years, Myrtle Leonia Lewis, lively daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. John William Lucas, practically lived in the North End Baptist Church. Falling asleep on uncushioned church pews and attending services end-on-end probably helped to equip Myrtle for the life she sought and lived. A child convert, Myrtle was baptized by her father and pastor in the Tar River. This was a very special Sunday morning in the springtime at the "Falls".

When Myrtle was ten years old, a missionary worker in the church mentored and molded her into a church pianist. Myrtle's feet could not reach the piano pedals from the high revolving wobbly stool. This loving and devout sister presented the "Sunshine Band" in a special program, with Myrtle, the child pianist, as accompanist. Her mother, Rebecca and father, Rev. Lucas gasped in astonishment as the tinkly sounds of"Little Workers" began to emanate from the slightly battered instrument- "Singfor Him, Speak for HifJ'I,, Serve Him every day ... ". From that time on, the Pastor of the church had a pianist at his fingertips. If anyone had to have a pianist for any worship service, funeral or missionary service, the volunteer was "Rev. Lucas' baby daughter"! Courting, romance, Sunday evening walks were eliminated.

Her mother, Rebecca, always stressed the beauty and humility of serving Jesus. The opportunity and privilege itself was sufficient payment. An older daughter, Ethel, played for the Senior Choir while Myrtle played for the Junior Choir. Her mother and brother, John Harding, sometimes comprised the choir as church had to begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. regardless of whether any choir members had arrived or not. As time went on, Myrtle, became deeply involved in practically every aspect of North End Baptist Church. She was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher.

During Myrtle's high school career, her mother's illness cast a pallor of gloom over the precious teenage years. Being a class valedictorian, BTW High School '39, was not enough to convince a Baptist minister that Samaria was not in Rocky Mount on graduation night. Attending college nearby at in Raleigh, where she also finished as valedictorian in 1943, meant continuing to play piano for the church on and off during her academic career. Without a doubt, the gospel had to be preached in season and out.

Three months after college graduation, Myrtle lost her mother, a devout missionary worker. Myrtle began to realize that the world could crash about her feet and skies could turn somber gray. A "Mother Stand-In'', her big sister, Ethel, took the reins, and in a loving way, has never relinquished them. Many years later, Myrtle suffered deep grief about the losses of her husband, Ben Sr. and son, Ben Jr., to cancer. Each of these losses seemed to connect with the other and sap some of her unfettered joy and add a painful weight.

Still in search of her own identity, Myrtle relieved an anxious preacher father, who ruled with an iron hand, by accepting a marriage proposal from a high school sweetheart, Benjamin Lewis. Involvement in the church work continued faithfully while the illness of a weakening father added to the challenges and anguish of life.

Myrtle seemed possessed with boundless energy. An Inspirational Choir which still exists today was organized at North End, and many projects were undertaken. Souls were added to the church through the ministry of this fellowship. ORDER OF SERVICE

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Your comforting expressions of love, in so many thoughtful ways, during the illness of our loved one and during our period of bereavement, will always be remembered with sincere gratitude. ~The Family ~

SERVICE OF LOVE AND MEMORY BY: Stokes Mortuary, Inc. 207 Albemarle Avenue Rocky Mount, North Carolina 27801 After a few years, Benjarmin Jr. arrived. A short choir leave was taken. Thereafter, the father, "Big Ben'', dutifully attended to the baby on Sunday mornings so that the choir music could proceed.

After several years of teaching school, attending to an invalid father, conducting countless numbers of choir rehearsals, and traveling hither and thither on preacher and choir engagements, her faith in God was strengthened. This helped to cushion the homegoing of her father, who had felt the weight of woe and illness through long days and nights. The Lewis family found the answer to prayer with a purpose. After eight years, God sent John Marshall to ioin Benjamin Jr. It seemed as if a ship was sent out, and a ship came m.

Adventure seemed to run through the veins of the family. In 1962, Benjamin Sr., an exceptionally skilled brick mason, chose Richmond, Virginia as a destination to enhance his job opportunities. Why not try another city where work was thriving? It was a real shock to the community when Myrtle announced that the family would be moving away. Unknown to anyone except the immediate family, Myrtle had obtained a teaching position in Richmond and was going to join her husband who was putting mortar on bricks to keep them in "perspective". She had five days in which to dispose of eight rooms of furniture and relocate a ten year old and a two year old baby. Not knowing what the future held for them, God enfolded the four travelers in arms of caring, love and protection.

Alberta Odum, now deceased, had made her home in Richmond and joined the Mount Herman Baptist Church. Myrtle and Alberta were reunited and had a common bond in praising the Lord through song since Alberta had been a former member of the North End Choir. Alberta expressed a need for someone to answer a Macedonian Call as Mount Herman was without a pianist. Would Myrtle be the one to answer that call?

"Yes". Myrtle answered that call. In 1963, Myrtle and her husband, the late Deacon Benjamin Lewis Sr., joined the Mount Herman Baptist Church. Myrtle served as organist and director of the Senior Choir for twenty years and served as the Minister of Music. Her musical talent was not restricted to Mount Herman but was shared throughout Richmond and the vicinity. Myrtle was involved in other aspects of the church. She was a deaconess, member of the District Deaconess Auxiliary and the Deaconess Conference of Virginia, chairperson of Ways and Means, a member of the Senior Missionary Circle, a life member of the Division of Women of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia, a member of Women's Auxiliary of the Deacon's Conference of Richmond and vicinity, assistant pianist for the Women's Chorus, a member of the Virginia State Deacon's Convention and member of the National Baptist Deacon's Convention of America, Inc. Mount Herman felt blessed to have her cast her membership with them.

At her retirement, Myrtle was employed as Chapter I Reading Teacher at the Summer Hill El~mentary School after having taught for a number of years at the Franklin Elementary School. She began her career at Wake Forest, N.C., moving to the Nash County Schools, and then to O.R. Pope and Baskerville Schools in Rocky Mount. She was a skilled and dedicated educator who diligently pursued teaching in both a formal and informal manner. In addition to having earned a Master's Degree in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1977, she also did additional study at Howard University in Washington, D.C., at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia, at Virginia Union University in Richmond and the University of Richmond. Her area of specialty was reading and learning disabilities. During her retirement years, she took continuing education courses at the Gerontology Department of the Medical College of Virginia, focusing on Alzheimer's Disease, to support her sister, Ethel, whose husband, Tuffy, had been stricken with that devastating disease.

(Continued on Back) THIS WAS YOUR LIFE, MYRTLE! (Continued)

Myrtle was known for her quick and sarcastic wit. She was unforgiving and genuinely puzzled at those who did not appreciate her sense of humor. She had the uncmmy ability to catch you at your most vulnerable moment. The story is told by one of her co-workers that she went to some of the teachers individually to tell them that the principal had discovered that they had taken extra supplies from the store room and were hoarding them. She admonished each one of them privately to return the extra supplies to the storeroom to lessen the trouble. They each thought she was giving them individually this secret information. They discovered it was an April Fool's joke when they all met each other in the storeroom secretly returning the extra reams of paper and stencils, and Myrtle met them there saying "April Fool", of course.

The dedication she displayed in the Richmond Public School System merited her recognition throughout the metropolitan area as well as on the regional level. She was awarded a twenty year service pin by the Superintendent of Schools.

Myrtle was a charter member of The Rocky Mount Alunmae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a member of many other civic, professional and charitable organizations.
