Engine, chassis, body. In every component of the 911, Porsche has invested years of experience, thousands of ideas and countless hours of development. Even the smallest innovation would fill a book. Yet, it is only when all individual parts work as one that we see a particular principle emerge: a harmonious overall concept or – as engineers sometimes call it – the unique technical layout of the 911. Oktoberfeste

Oktoberfest began as the celebration of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s (later King Ludwig I5) marriage to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810.6 The Bavarians enjoyed the party, but decided that October was too cold, so they moved it to September. Oktoberfest seems to combine well with German cars (wenn Sie nicht zu viel trinken Bier).

There were lots of Oktoberfeste to choose from but Oktoberfest in Big Bear Lake is the only Southern California Oktoberfest still going in November.

185th Oktoberfest in München, 22 September through 7 October 2018

Obviously, the one in Munich is the original. One might expect Mädchen im Dirndl, there’s also Armbrustschützen und Scheibenschießen7. It all takes place at die Theresienwiese im Zentrum von München.

5 Ludwig I was not “Mad King Ludwig”—that was his grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig I was essentially overthrown in 1848 shortly after he attempted to tax beer. 6 From wikipedia.org 7 The first athlete disqualified from the Olympics for doping was a Swedish modern pentathlete who had “two beers” to “calm his nerves” before the pistol shooting portion at the 1968 Olympics.

Here's the Absurd Amount of Work It Takes to Drive the Porsche 919 Evo on Public Roads

From Jalopnik, by Justin T. Westbrook, 24 October 2018, 4:05 PM

Filed to: PORSCHE 919 EVO

Photo: Porsche The Porsche 919 Evo is still on its tribute tour through America, with the latest installment in the video series showing it drive up the Pacific Coast Highway. What’s more interesting, though, is that it took a van full of computers, a giant antenna and a team of over 25 people just to get the car rolling.

sgvr.pca.org 40 of 64 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 30 October 2018

Here’s the video in question, which mostly plays as an unassuming brief of Porsche’s racing history in California, dating back to 1954:

www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=WQDI2tGI_6E The interesting part of the video, for me at least, is what was playing out behind the scenes.

Photos: Porsche

The ad was shot using the very same Porsche 919 Evo that blitzed the Nürburgring on the stretch of the PCH between Bixby Bridge and Big Sur, according to Porsche, one of the prettiest stretch of road on what’s already a famously gorgeous route. The catch was that the production team was only allowed to shut down the road for three minutes at a time, before having to stop and make way for regular traffic, and they had to do a total of five runs to get all of the footage they needed.

That isn’t even the biggest pain in the ass. Take a look at this photo:

Photo: Porsche See that Dodge Durango over to the right with all of the wires coming out of it? All of those computers replace most of the onboard computers that you’d typically see in the actual body of a car in an effort to save weight. But in a ‘roided-up race car like the 919 Evo (and, in fact, a lot of LMP1 cars) they’re outside the car entirely. The way it works involves a 50-foot antenna hooked up to the computers, which you can see as the yellow stick to the right of the image above, that beams all of the functional information, like telemetry and whatnot, to the car with a radio signal.

Drive too far away and, well, the car doesn’t like it. To run properly it needs a constant connection.

And that’s assuming you can even get it going. It takes about 25 people to just turn the car on, because the Porsche 919 Evo is more race car than race car.

All these guys, and two cops, just to get it moving on public roads | Photo: Porsche The final major challenge was handled by the driver on the shoot, Neel Jani. The 919 is a nutjob machine made for the fastest drivers in the world, so it’s not exactly engineered to drive slow very well. Apparently, the car struggles to run under 40 mph, so Jani had to essentially ride the clutch to get it to drive any slower on hybrid power.

The last run of the day, however, was done in all-electric mode, which helped drain the battery so the car could be safely prepared for transport on a plane.

All of this effort to get some beautiful shots and a nice little film, just for you. It’s much nicer to get a behind-the-scenes look at how demanding one of the best WEC champions is to deal with in the real world.

Porsche Classic’s “Project Gold” heads to new home for EUR 2.7 Million

From Porsche Newsroom, 28 October 2018

After a total of 37 bids and ten minutes, the main prize for Porsche collectors was ready to go: This Saturday saw the “911 Turbo Classic Series” auctioned off at the Porsche Experience Centre Atlanta (USA) as part of the “RM Sotheby’s – The Porsche 70th Anniversary Auction 2018” event.

This car – based on an original 993 body shell – was sold for a total price of EUR 2.743.500. The one-off piece created by Porsche Classic is already considered a highly sought-after collectors’ item. The net proceeds of EUR 2.589.027 will go directly to the not-for-profit Ferry Porsche Foundation, which was set up this year to mark the brand’s anniversary, “70 years of Porsche sports cars”. Porsche Classic has also created two “Project Gold”-inspired genuine parts as a special treat for all 993 owners. Porsche customers can opt to upgrade their vehicles with a new aluminium tank cap (available for all 911 models from the years 1980 to 1998) and a black tail pipe.

A total of 51 vehicles went under the hammer during the auction. The Estimate for the unique 911 Turbo Classic Series was EUR 154.473 equivalent to the retail price for a 911 Turbo S from 1998. The story behind the “Project Gold” model is as unusual as the design itself: Painted in Golden Yellow

Metallic, it references the 2018 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. The black wheels are highlighted by Golden Yellow design accents, while the seats and interior trim are finished in black with Golden Yellow details. The bodyshell features the characteristic side air intakes of the 993 type 911 Turbo S. The 331 kW (450 hp) Classic Series celebrated its world premiere at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion in Laguna Seca (USA) on September 27, 2018.

The net proceeds of EUR 2.589.027 will go directly to the not-for-profit Ferry Porsche Foundation. The foundation – named after the brand’s founder, Ferry Porsche – focuses primarily on the homes of its Stuttgart and Leipzig factories. It also supports projects at the brand’s international sites. The foundation supports work in the fields of education, research, sport, culture and social affairs. In the future, the foundation is also planning to focus more on its own range of projects.

Consumption data 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series: Fuel consumption combined 9.1 l/100 km; CO2emissions 212 g/km

European Court Rules That Inoperative and Unused Cars Need Insurance Too

From Hemmings Daily, by Daniel Strohl on, 26 October 2018, 8:59 AM

BMW in Greece. Photo by Charlie. Just as a farming accident inadvertently imperiled the future of motorsports in Europe, an ill-fated joyride has now made it more difficult for museums, collectors, and restorers to keep cars around after the European Court of Justice ruled last month that even immobilized and unused vehicles need insurance.

The case in question dates back to 2006, when a Portugese grandmother, Alina Antónia Destapado Pão Mole Juliana, took her car off the road and parked it in her yard due to her declining health. Though it was still roadworthy and she’d yet to formally de-register it, she let the compulsory insurance on it lapse. That November, her son took the keys to the car – both the son and the car were unidentified in court documents – and ended up driving it off the road after losing control of it, killing himself and two of his passengers.

Portugal’s state insurance fund, Fundo de Garantia Automóvel, paid out compensation to the survivors of the two passengers and then in turn sued Juliana and her granddaughter, Cristiana Micaela Caetano Juliana, for reimbursement. Juliana objected, arguing that because she had literally removed the vehicle

sgvr.pca.org 61 of 64 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 30 October 2018 from the road, kept it on her private property, and did not intend for it to be used, she had no obligation to maintain insurance on it.

The Fund argued that because all vehicles pose “inherent risks,” owners of those vehicles need to insure the vehicles – even when the vehicles are not in use and kept on private property – until those vehicles are formally de-registered and withdrawn from use.

Portugal’s Supreme Court decided to relay the case to the European Court of Justice. In its deliberations, The European Court of Justice considered the expanded scope of the European Union’s 2009 Motor Insurance Directive set forth in the court’s own 2014 decision in the Vnuk case, a ruling that determined that the use of motor vehicles – and thus the obligation to maintain insurance on motor vehicles – extends beyond public roads and onto private property.

That ruling, which has drawn condemnation by the Motorsport Industry Association and the Motorcycle Industry Association for its disregard of the implications regarding European motorsport – an activity that will now require insurance coverage but which is practically uninsurable.

Ultimately, in a decision handed down in early September, the European Court of Justice sided against Juliana.

It must be held that a vehicle which is registered and therefore has not been officially withdrawn from use, and which is capable of being driven, corresponds to the concept of ‘vehicle’ within the meaning of Article 1(1) of the First Directive and, consequently, does not cease to be subject to the insurance obligation laid down in Article 3(1) of that directive, on the sole ground that its owner no longer intends to drive it and immobilises it on private land.

While the Juliana decision reiterates the same basic threats to motorsport conducted on private land in Europe that the Vnuk ruling posed, it also conceivably extends the requirement for insurance coverage to European car museums – many of which undoubtedly keep their vehicles registered and in working condition but do not insure them for use on the road – as well as restoration shops and private collectors whose in-process projects and parts cars behind their shed cycle in and out of operative condition on a regular basis. Sans insurance, those vehicles will need to be deregistered and completely removed from operation.

Compounding both the Vnuk and the Juliana decisions is yet another court ruling, this one from the U.K.’s Court of Appeal (UK Insurance v. Holden), which holds that repairing a vehicle constitutes normal use of a vehicle (again arguing that a vehicle is inherently dangerous whether or not it is being driven), and thus any vehicle under repair – or, theoretically, under restoration – is obligated to carry insurance as well.

The European Commission, after issuing a consultation on the Vnuk ruling, has taken steps to formally enshrine required insurance for off-road use of a motor vehicle in the Motor Insurance Directive. That process is expected to last through next year.
