Many business owners and residents have applauded the Green Light program for keeping the city safer. Indeed, the cameras have helped solve crimes, says Willie Bell, a district chairman on the Police Commissioners’ board. Footage from the cam- eras has helped track down suspects in the May shooting of five members of the LGBT community, as well as the suspects who halted traffic on Lodge Free- way while performing stunts in their vehicles. Yet others question the effectiveness of the pro- gram. Eric C. Williams, an attorney with ACLU of Michigan, says there is no evidence to suggest that either Project Green Light or use of facial recognition technology has helped prevent crime. “Crime trends in Detroit have been falling parallel to the national trend,” Williams said. “Our line is just higher.” Further, Williams expressed concern that facial recognition is especially problematic for minorities, since it has proven less accurate at recognizing black and brown faces. “The law has not caught up to technology, and rules haven’t been made to address our fundamental rights,” Williams says. Bell assures that any problems with the technolo- gy will be addressed, and that the department are taking constitutional concerns seriously. Ger- ing thought she might be coming up from Tuscaloosa, Ala. to visit her parents in Ironwood. She was and she brought her husband, Chris, and her four kids. They are J.T., Clare, Mary and John. Gering asked Besanceney to speak to and run with the SISU Endurance Team Runners Club, which is a group of young people from the area that like to get out and run together. Besanceney was a natural. She was a great all-around athlete, but she excelled in running at Luther L. Wright High School. She graduated from Ironwood with 12 var- sity letters total, including letters in basketball, volleyball, track and cross country. Besanceney was part of seven Upper Peninsula champion Red Devils' teams – four in track, two in cross country and one in volleyball. Her senior year (1998) was the fifth consecutive year that the Red Devil girls track team won the Class C U.P. Finals title. She still holds the Class C record for the 800 meter run in 2:21.27. She still holds school records in the 800 meter run (2:21.27), the 1,600 meter run (5:13) and the 3,200 meter run (11:36.0) and she ran to a school record in the 3,200 meter relay with Chelsea Finco, Jenny Shull and Tara Makinen (9:51.5) in 1997. Besanceney only ran cross country for two years in high school in 1996 and 1997. During those two years, she led the team to two U.P. titles by winning individuals championships. She was also named Runner of the Year in 1997 by the U.P Cross Country coaches and was a U.P. Dream Team member. Besanceney played on the varsity basketball team for four years and the varsity volleyball Pat Krause/Daily Globe team for three. East should consider the target: the number of tricks the defenders need. Here, it is four. East should look at each suit in turn. He can hope for a winner with his spade king. The trump suit appears to be worthless. Since West guaranteed at least five diamonds with his two-level overcall, there is at most one trick in that suit for the defenders (and if declarer has a diamond void, East-West have no chance). So, the club suit will have to provide two tricks. Here, if East signals discourag- ingly with the diamond two at trick one, West might shift to the club king; but it is much safer for East to take control. He should overtake the diamond king with his ace and shift to the club jack. South has no answer.
