It is hard to belie ve that we are halfw ay through the year already. Since our last issue, many events have taken place. We started off with the Naja Circus in Rapid City. It was 5 wonderful shows and may end up being one of our best years yet. We had a Spring Ceremonial in Deadwood that was unbelievable. We had 13 of the most fun new Nobles you can imagine, a great parade, and I believe a fun time was had by all. Next up was the annual bus trip to Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. We made it a 3 day trip where besides the tour of the hospital, we also enjoyed a baseball game and an afternoon at the Mall of America. This is a must trip if you ha ve never been on it. The Potentate’s Ball in Deadwood was next on the agenda. We want to thank all of you Potentate Jeff Schroeder who attended the golf day as well all the other acti vities. I think everyone had a great time all weekend. It was a weekend we will not soon for get. I ended June with representing Naja while w atching our very own Noble Mike Rodman will be sw orn in as our ne w Grand Master of South Dakota. July started off in Tampa for the Imperial Session where we endured sweltering heat but had a great time. Next were the Outdoor Circuses. All the shows were well attended and everyone worked very hard and had a fun time doing it. But there is so much more yet to do. MSA Summer Session in Marquette, MI (8-3 to 8-6). And there are many other club meetings and events along the way. Once again, we want to thank all of you for helping mak e this a fantastic year and we look forward to see all of you in the coming weeks at as many events and unit meetings as possible. Remember…..When in doubt…..HAVE MORE FUN !!!! Illustrious Sir Jeff Schroeder

The Naja circuses are in the history books and it w as another banner year . There were some changes to our normal circus schedule and we were forced to try a fe w new ideas this year. Lemmon was booked solid with Boss Cowman Days which left us no choice but to move the circus to Hettinger, ND. We returned with shows to Faith and Philip for the first time in many years. The Day's of 76 Rodeo Grounds in Deadw ood completely remodeled their kitchen and hired a food service, so we lost the food concessions in Deadwood. We did however turn all the ne gatives into positives. The Faith and Hettinger Circuses were both well attended and v ery accepted by the local communities. Despite the heat on Sunday afternoon, the bleachers were packed full in Philip. An afternoon rain shower in Deadwood cooled things down so the evening attendance in Deadwood was one of our largest. From the Circus Chairmen: The Rapid City Shrine circuses were w onderfully successful due to the man y volunteers who came out and w orked so hard. Without the nobles and their families and friends who do so much for our circuses, the y would not be as successful as they were. I w ould like to thank each and e very one of you for your tireless work and dedication to our cause. Thank you so very much. Scott Sharp, Rapid City Circus Chairman ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ The West River Shrine Unit would like to thank its Nobles, Ladies, families, friends and those from other units that v olunteered to help. With everyone's hard w ork and dedication this year’s circuses were a great success. Keith Hanson, Faith & Hettinger Circus Chairman ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ Thank you to everyone that helped make this another great circus in Deadwood. We lost the food concessions this year but with the kitchen workers freed up to help elsewhere we had record sales in novelties, snowcones and cotton candy. A very special thank you goes to William "Candy Man" Biegger and his crew for making and bagging all the cotton candy for both Deadwood and Philip. Their hot sticky work helped raise thousands of dollars for Naja and their dedication is very much appreciated by all. Kip Wagner, Deadwood Circus Chairman ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ ✶ The Four River Shrine Club would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time to sell tickets, pound tent stakes, haul chairs, park cars, or sell water. The first circus back in Philip in twenty-six years w as a huge success. The people of Philip and the surrounding area turned out to fill the bleachers and enjoyed the show despite the record heat. Plans are already underway for next year's show. Joel Stephens, Philip Circus Chairman

Nobles: Shriners Hospital for Children has started tracking Shriner referrals more closely in order to recognize them for their efforts. The intake coordinator will record the names of Shriner referrals during the intak e process. Be sure you tell the family you are referring to let the hospital know your name when they first call to have their child seen! DVD’S NEEDED Our library of DVDs is beginning to age and we are looking to update it a little. If you have DVDs that are suitable for young children lying around the house that might be looking for a new home, please consider donating them to the Naja Shrine Hospital Division. We would be happy to accept new ones as well.

Page 10 . Aug, Sept, Oct 2016 Referring Families to Shriners Hospitals Nobles, when referring a child and their families to Shriners Hospitals for Children, please remember to say, “All care is provided based solely on a childʼs medical needs regardless of the familiesʼ ability to pay.” Shriners Hospitals are now accepting patients insurance and Medicaid. If the family has any question about service payments, they can contact their RN Care Coordinator or call the Care Coordination office at 888-293-2832 ext. 6127, or email [email protected]. Patients are responsible for any copayments or deductibles associated with services provided at Shriners Hospitals. The family may receive a statement from Shriners identifying any service balances after insurance payments. Shriners does have ways to assist patients with concerns about financial balances, and no service will be reduced, denied or altered in any way because of a financial issue. The best way to help any patient family with specific financial questions is to direct them to contact the hospital insurance coordinator at 888-293-2832 ext. 6114 or email them at [email protected].

** Nobles please remember that services received outside of the Shriners Hospital are subject to those hospitals charges.

FIRE PREVENTION MONTH The Annual Fire Prevention month with the Rapid City Fire Department begins the first week of October. We will be participating with them as they visit each elementary classroom in Rapid City and do a presentation in order to teach the children fire safety. They are also bringing their fire trucks for the Kindergarten classes to see. Naja Nobles are attending these presentations in the Kindergarten thru second grades, and providing an educational activity book provided by Shriners International called “Be Burn Aware” with Boots and Bre wster the Burn Awareness Pair. An estimated 3500 coloring/activity books are being provided to the schools’ teachers for handout to these students. If you are interested in helping with this, or have any questions, please call the Hospital Division office at 343-4279.

Shrine kids and other local children were treated to free PBR t-shirts, lunch, a practice roping area, riding a f ake bull, sitting in the Naja stagecoach or chuck wagon, balloon figures and an autograph session by the PBR co wboys. Many thanks go out to our shrine clowns for tying the balloons, our co wboy unit for providing their stagecoach and chuck wagon, and the DADS for their helping hands. Page 13 NAJA SHRINERS ATTEND THE SHRINE HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN TWIN CITIES HOSPITAL DAY On Friday, May 20, 32 Naja Shriners and guests boarded a charter bus for a trip to the Shrine Hospital for Children -Twin Cities open house. After arriving at the hotel, most people chose to attend the Minnesota Twins baseball game. It was a beautiful evening and we had the same good seats we had last year, but this time the Twins lost their game to the Toronto Blue Jays! On Saturday morning Nobles and guests attended Hospital Day. Since some Nobles had driven themselves, a total of 39 Nobles and guests represented Naja. Upon arri val, everyone was welcomed by the hospital administration and tours of the hospital follo wed along with programs presented within the different departments. It was a beautiful day and many local Shrine units, such as the Shrine Motorc ycle unit and Horse Patrol were present to add to the festi vities. It is always exciting to see the services that we as Shriners support. At noon, it was back on the bus to return to the hotel. From there, many of the Nobles and guests went to the Mall of America to experience the shopping, events and attractions, and of course search for the “one” of more than 50 restaurants for supper, they have to offer. It was a busy day, but everyone had a great time. Sunday morning we loaded the bus with our purchases and headed home. This year this event was planned for a 3-day trip instead of returning after Hospital Day on Saturday . Many of the nobles enjo yed the additional time together . If you ha ve not attended Hospital Day recently, you should consider this trip next year. It is a great time and you will be amazed at the work we support through Shrine Hospitals for Children - Twin Cities. Dennis Thompson, Chairman Naja Shrine Hospital Division

Aug, Sept, Oct 2016 . Page 15 WE HAVE A PARAOLYMPIAN! ROAD TO THE PARALYMPICS: US PARALYMPIC TRIALS MEET IN CHARLOTTE, NC With one race left to go, Natalie Sims, a 19-year -old YWCA Minneapolis Otters swim team member, had to hear the truth of the upcoming 100-meter freestyle final. She was seeded third after a best-matching swim in the morning, but there was a chance that even that would not be enough to get her onto the Rio Paralympic Team. Otters Head Coach Dave Cameron laid out the stakes ahead: “We’ve gone over all the strategic and technical details we can. But you need to kno w something about this race. It’s not just your last race at this year’s trials. It’s very likely the last para race that we will be together for. If it goes well, you join your national team coaches in Rio. If it doesn’ t, you still look forward to your college coaches next year at University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse. But this is it for you and me on deck. You have to swim this one for you, and you have to swim it for us.” Natalie paused before responding. “You’re going to get me all emotional.” That was exactly the plan. F acing the new world record-holder in the S9 100-meter freestyle swim, and the possibility that she’d be excluded from the Rio Games e ven with an event victory, Natalie had to bring more to this race than any before. She had earned times f ast enough to be on the Emer ging Team, which is for athletes with potential for future national and international meets, but she had yet to make a National Team qualifying time in any swim. Making the National Team brings a litany of resources to a swimmer and their f amily, from financial and travel support, to equipment, insurance and scholarship opportunities. But the qualifying time for the NationalTeam was over a second faster than Natalie’s best, and she wasn’t even seeded as the runner-up. As she left her coach to walk to the ready room before the race, she turned around and gave her coach her version of a fist bump- his fist against her right arm, which is a limb-deficient mid-wrist. “I’ve got this.” The Race Natalie started the race with a speed we’ve never seen from her before. She moved to the edge of the lane to swim close to Michelle Konkoly, the world record-holder who was seeded almost six seconds faster than Natalie. Natalie drove her kick, picked up her tempo, and stayed with Michelle into the w all at the 50 meter mark. Her opening 50 meters was within tenths of her fastest 50 meters of her life! Coming of f the wall, she could see that she had moved into second, ahead of tw o national team members and ahead of an y pace she’d ever maintained. Stroke after stroke, she extended her lead, coming back almost 1.5 seconds faster than her back 50 meters of the morning preliminary swim. As she rushed into the f inish, she timed it perfectly to land on her left arm, necessary for a speed adv antage because of the limb deficiency on her right arm. She looked up and couldn’t believe the time. She had over a two second drop from her previous race, had won second place and was over a second ahead of the National Team qualifying time. She was stunned and o verjoyed. No matter what the US P aralympic team announced, she had e xceeded her expectations, and demonstrated what thousands of hours of training over the last four years atYWCA Minneapolis had delivered. Making the USA Paralympic Team After another sleepless night of anticipation, Coach Dave let us know it had just been announced that Natalie Sims, a YWCA Minneapolis Otter for 4.5 years, will represent Team USA at the Rio Paralympics in September. After three days of swim race trials in Charlotte, North Carolina, 21 female and 10 male para athletes were selected to join the USA Paralympic swim team. This is another milestone in Natalie’s accomplished swim journey. She will continue to receive support from her friends, family and the YWCA community who have all helped drive her to the world stage, where she is now ranked in the top 8 in two events. Congratulations, Natalie!
