Priya Shah Senior Economist, Department of Work & Pensions, UK Government I grew up in Southall and have spent many Saturdays getting bored while my family shoppedon Ealing Road! I did my GCSEs and A-levels at Greenford High School and was the only girl who chose to study Economics at A-level. I believe this was because my Dad always told me I could be anything I wanted to be – it didn’t matter whether I was a boy or a girl. My mum never prioritised her education because that wasn’t the norm for women when she was growing up and she reminded me every day to try as hard as I could so that I didn’t have to stand on my feet all night at work like her – and so I did.

I completed my BSc in Economics at the University of Nottingham which provided me with a direct route into the Government Economic Service. I was then sponsored by my employer to study my MSc in Economics at the University of Warwick. Today I am a Senior Economist for the Civil Service and believe that is because even though I was afraid of failure - I still tried.
