Light Ground Marc Sabat Light Ground an 11-limit modulation for 2 tanpuras in changing scordature or 2 harpsichords in just intonation PLAINSOUND MUSIC EDITION Light Ground (2014/15) an 11-limit modulation for 2 tanpuras in changing scordature or 2 harpsichords in just intonation inspired by work with Catherine Christer Hennix and Marcus Pal commissioned by Mareike Lee for Ivo and Kuno This piece references a line of work exploring the possibilities of just intonation which has evolved out of the teaching of Pandit Pran Nath, also manifested in numerous compositions by La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Catherine Christer Hennix as well as various younger musicians. In Berlin, I came to know the tamburas of Pandit Pran Nath in Catherine Christer Hennix’s studio whilst assisting Marcus Pal in making recordings of her ongoing composition for these two instruments tuned pa-sa-sa-SA and played at once. Astounded by the rich variety of spectral interactions of the instruments, which are normally heard in an accompanying role while producing the harmonic drone in Indian music, I was inspired to create a new piece for this wonderful instrumentation. Over a number of years, in conversations with my colleague and friend Jeremy Woodruff we would discuss the possibility of composing harmonic “modulations” of the traditionally fixed drone in Indian music. Might it be possible, we wondered, to make harmonic changes (movements between gamuts of tones based on different fundamentals) in a way which might also enable the development of new Indian raga forms? Could this also be heard from other listening perspectives as an interesting music form? I began to consider the most commonly used consonant tambura tunings (sa- ma, sa-pa, sa-ni). I found a way of harmonically relating two very distant patterns a quarter-tone apart by considering just intonation ratios from a common subaudio fundamental (2 Hz). The composition is a gradual transformation between these two drones. I imagine several possible realisations of this piece: as a recording played over multiple loudspeakers distributed in a large space, or in a network of connected rooms. Each bar of the music, and each of the two tamburas in changing scordature, is recorded independently, cycling its repeating pattern for a long time. These are then edited into a sequence of gradually changing harmonies. In a larger setting each pair of loudspeakers might reproduces a slow loop through the score, offset from the next pair by one or more bars. In this manner, the entire piece — one “dissonant” harmony beating at 120 bpm — may be always sounding all at once, and by walking past the loudspeakers, one may play/hear through the piece as a modulation between two consonant drone tunings, running the harmonic changes forwards or backwards in time. Alternately, a live version performed by 4 tanpurists and 22 instruments distributed in a space is possible, or a faster version for two harpsichords retuned as indicated in the score. Photo: Bill Jacobson Studio, New York, courtesy Dia Art Foundation, New York New York – September 27, 2019 – This fall, Dia Art Foundation presents an exhibition at Dia:Beacon, Beacon, New York, of works on paper by renowned multidisciplinary artist Marian Zazeela. Since 1962 Zazeela has worked with her long-time collaborator, La Monte Young, on large-scale installations in sound and light. While Zazeela’s sculptures and light design have become well known, her works on paper have remained decidedly less so. This presentation features approximately thirty works on paper dating from 1962 to 1990, which showcase the range of materials and motifs that stem from the artist’s deep interest in calligraphy and ornamental forms, and link her divergent practices. The exhibition, which marks only the second solo presentation to date of Zazeela’s works on paper, opens on October 5, 2019, and will be on view through May 2021. The works on view at Dia:Beacon advance what Zazeela terms “borderline art”—work that challenges the hierarchical distinction between decorative and fine art by using ornamentation in the fine art tradition and using borders as content in themselves. On visits to Morocco at the beginning of her artistic career in 1959, Zazeela was inspired by the Arabic lettering on marketplace signs. Building upon this early interest in calligraphy, she began to borrow forms from cursive writing and vary them to create new patterns.

    North Indian Traditional Music’s Influence on the Works of Two Experimental Musicians Haruo Inoue Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies Kyoto University 1. Introduction This paper discusses the musical interaction between two cultures through the works of two prominent American experimental musicians, La Monte Young and Terry Reily, and their relationship with their Indian teacher, Pran Nath, who introduced the Classical North Indian vocal music, Khyal, to North Americans. North Indian classical music is called Hindustani music, and it is quite popular worldwide. Hindustani music is different from Western music, because it does not have any fixed notations. Hindustani music has only two fundamental theories. One is rāga, the theory of melody, and the other is tāla, the theory of rhythm. Hindustani musicians use these theories to improvise and create their own musical styles. Therefore, each performance is completely different from previous or other musicians’ performances; in other words, a performance is never repeated. This is quite amazing, because “classic” usually refers to past works that are repeated again and again. In this sense, Hindustani music is very traditional, yet it is renovated by each individual artist. Since Hindustani music’s structure is quite flexible, it is conducive to fusion with other musical genres such as pop, rock, and jazz. In the 60s and 70s, many Western bands tried to use images of Indian music. The most successful example would be The Beatles who extensively used Indian instruments from the late 60s in their songs. So many writers or researchers studied the relationship between the legendary rock band, The Beatles, and the famous Indian musician Ravi Shankar (1920-2001).

Actually, it's best to think of it as two kinds of vibration: the struck sound, that is the sound that we can hear and feel manifest physically; and the unstruck sound, which is the Pythagorean equivalent of the music of the spheres.

    From Raga to Rag: On Terry Riley’s Stylistic Synthesis It seems particularly timely and appropriate to be writing about Terry Riley in 2005, the year of his seventieth birthday, when a spirit of festive celebration fills the air. A free spirit, maverick par excellence, creator of a personal compositional style that has spawned entire generations of epigones, he certainly deserves these sumptuous celebrations. Terry Riley is the kind of intellectual who embodies the best aspects of the American pioneer spirit, the positive and uncorrupted image of America (and California, in particular) that still holds abroad: an America free from the weight of European tradition, a privileged space where a fusion of Western and Eastern cultural trends can be produced. (After all, this has always been the supreme paradox of American art: The more diverse and multiethnic the result, the more it appears quintessentially “American.”) For more than forty years Riley’s music has engaged us, relentlessly developing in intensity and enlarging its scope, its author courageously exploring ever-new styles and compositional devices and smelting them into a unique syncretic synthesis. The styles Terry Riley adopts are like entries in a journal: each one the witness of a particular moment of his life, be it recent or one lost in time. These styles are like documents, trails that the passing of years has scratched in the catalogue of his works. Because every style that Riley embraces can be associated with a specific phase of his career, listening to his music allows us to travel across space and time, while simultaneously experiencing various steps along his personal and intellectual journey.

    La Monte Young Statement Because of Jeremy’s enthusiasm and his interest in our work, Marian and I gave him unprecedented access to our archives and made ourselves available for interviews and numerous phone queries when he was doing research for his doctoral thesis. As his thesis evolved into his book, we believed that it had the potential to be not only the first in depth treatment of our work and lives but also an accurate source for scholars on into the future. However, Jeremy’s rush to publish it without taking the time to review it with us for accuracy has resulted in a make believe account riddled with errors and a misconstrued analysis of my major work, The Well-Tuned Piano, based on his own insular worldview. In his zeal to credit my Mormon background with an over-emphasized impact on my work, he has ignored the influence of my years of sophisticated, advanced education and my long immersion in world music and Eastern philosophy. But most importantly, Jeremy failed to understand the profound significance of Marian and I having become disciples of Pandit Pran Nath in early 1970 after bringing him to the U.S. and living with him much of the time for 26 years, studying the Kirana gharana (style) of Indian classical raga singing in the traditional gurukul method of serving the master night and day. Being the idealist that I am, I had imagined a process whereby we would slowly work with Jeremy and carefully try to delineate the facts about my life and my work.

Regarding The Underlying Musical Composition of The Tortoise, His Dreams and Journeys (1964-present). The specific rules that governed the performance of my music, including the sections of The Tortoise, His Dreams and Journeys participated in by Tony Conrad and John Cale, create a sound characterized by the predominance of musical intervals whose numerators and denominators in just intonation are factorable by the primes 7, 3, and 2, and selected higher primes, especially 31, and by the exclusion of intervals whose numerators and denominators are factorable by the prime 5. If we represent intervals with numerators and denominators factorable by the primes 7, 3, and 2 in conventional music notation and terminology, we obtain intervals that include various sized major and minor sevenths (with emphasis on the septimally derived blues minor seventh in my compositions such as Bb Dorian Blues, Early Tuesday Morning Blues, Sunday Morning Blues, and The Tortoise), perfect fifths, octaves, unisons and their inversions, various sized major and minor seconds, and perfect fourths. The blues I was playing on the sopranino saxophone, directly preceding the period of The Tortoise, emphasized a technique I invented consisting of extremely fast combination- permutations of a limited set of tones to simulate a sustained chord. And the chord I increasingly emphasized consisted of the pitches Eb, Bb, Db, Eb, (the IV-chord from Bb Dorian Blues) extended over the full range of the saxophone. Translated back into just intonation, these pitches are all examples of octave transpositions of the primes 7, 3, and 2.
