Happy Easter, Country Bunny (shaped board book) DuBose Heyward, illustrated by Marjorie Flack

Mother Cottontail must leave home for one night to deliver Easter eggs, but her twenty-one little boy and girl bunnies are up to the challenge! Two by two, they cook, clean, and care for each other, and when Mother Cottontail returns with a big basket of Easter eggs for them, she is pleased—but not surprised—that all was well while she was away.

Bedtime Bunnies (padded board book) Wendy Watson

In this book it's bedtime for five little rabbits. They come in from outdoors, have a snack, brush their teeth, take a bath, put on nightclothes, and listen to a story before being tucked in. Outside, we see snowflakes falling. In the bunnies' home, all is warmth and coziness and playfulness and love. Four words per spread narrate the evening routine, and delightfully soft and spirited illustrations take readers into the bunnies' world. Young children who have this padded board book as a bedtime companion are lucky indeed, especially if their own getting-ready-for-bed rituals are as familiar and tender as those of the five bunnies.

Wendy Watsonhas illustrated more than one hundred books for children, many of which she also wrote. A longtime Vermont resident, she now divides her time between Phoenix, Arizona, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. www.wendy-watson.com

Red Again Barbara Lehman When a young boy discovers an abandoned book on the side of the road, it opens a window to another world just as real as his own. But what happens when the two worlds collide? This imaginative companion to the Caldecott Honor–winning The Red Book works in a continuous loop, showing us that stories never really end. While fans of the previous book will relish seeing the story play out, prior knowledge isn’t necessary in order to understand or savor this one. Barbara Lehman attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, lived in New York City for many years and now lives in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. The Red Book was awarded a Caldecott Honor in 2005. Barbara’s work has been included in shows at the Society of Illustrators, the Chicago Art Institute, and the New York Public Library.

I couldn't play on the same playground as the white kids. I couldn't go to their schools. I couldn't drink from their water fountains. There were so many things I couldn't do.

In 1963 Birmingham, Alabama, thousands of African American children volunteered to march for their civil rights after hearing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speak. They protested the laws that kept black people separate from white people. Facing fear, hate, and danger, these children used their voices to change the world. Frank Morrison's emotive oil-on-canvas paintings bring this historical event to life, while Monica Clark-Robinson's moving and poetic words document this remarkable time.

Great Big Things Kate Hoefler, illustrated by Noah Klocek Chronicling the quiet heroism of one small mouse on an arduous journey to bring another mouse the smallest of gifts, Great Big Things serves as a reminder that it’s not our size but what we’re doing in this world that makes us small or big: it’s what makes a teeny mouse as big as a mountain, what makes his gesture after a long journey as big and as consequential as the moon.

Following her debut, Real Cowboys, Kate Hoefler's poetic story of perseverance and friendship is brought to life by Noah Klocek's breathtaking expansive landscapes that celebrate the natural beauty of the world and the bonds that connect us all.

In this lively introduction to the pleasure of words, a timid young mouse's first trip out of the nest becomes a reading adventure. Mouseling has grown up surrounded by words, scraps of paper torn from menus. Once he leaves the nest, he decides that discovering words is his mission in life and finds more words than he can count, spelling and sounding them out, thrilled by each one. Older Than Dirt A Wild but True History of Earth by Don Brown and Dr. Michael Perfit

Almost 14.5 billion years ago, it all started with a BIG BANG and what began as a cloud of gas, dust, and rock eventually took shape and bloomed into a molten sphere. Battered by asteroid collisions, ice ages, and shifting tectonic plates, our fledgling planet finally pushed forth continents. But if you think the earth has calmed down since then—think again! Geological activity continues to sculpt the earth’s landscape, sometimes with terrible consequences for its inhabitants: earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis.

In this one-of-a-kind, wild, but true history of Earth, the Sibert Honor medalist Don Brown takes on big concepts with humor and ease.

* "Perfect for young animal lovers and a great read-aloud for storytime." —School Library Journal, starred review

Just a Second Steve Jenkins

"This is a fascinatingly different way to approach natural history as well as time."—The Bulletin

What happens in just a second? A bat makes 200 high-pitched calls. A hummingbird beats its wings 50 times. A woodpecker hammers a tree trunk with its beak 20 times. A human can blink 7 times. A vulture in fight flaps its wings once.

This nonfiction picture book explores the concept of time as a series of events in the natural world that take place in given units of time. Steve Jenkins's stunning collage illustrations and fascinating collection of facts create an engaging and interconnected look at time, animals, science, and the natural world.

* "Charming and elegantly written." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Long before they became famous writers, Truman Capote (In Cold Blood) and Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird) were childhood friends in Monroeville, Alabama. This fictionalized account of their time together opens at the beginning of the Great Depression, when they're both still young. They love playing pirates, but they like playing Sherlock and Watson–style detectives even more. It’s their pursuit of a case of drugstore theft that lands the daring duo in real trouble. Humor and heartache intermingle in this lively look at two budding writers in the 1930s South.

G. Neri has written many books for children, including Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty, a Coretta Scott King Author Honor winner; Knockout Games; Hello, My Name Is Johnny Cash; and Ghetto Cowboy. He lives in Florida with his wife and daughter. www.gregneri.com

Hear the Wind Blow Mary Downing Hahn

“A first-rate story.” —Kirkus Reviews

On a cold, snowy night, thirteen-year-old Haswell Magruder makes a fateful decision. A wounded Confederate soldier appears at the family’s Virginia farm, and Haswell convinces his mother to take the man in, despite the dire repercussions if the enemy Yankees were to catch them in such an act. Midnight Without a Moon Linda Williams Jackson

"A powerful story." —Kirkus Reviews

It’s Mississippi in the summer of 1955, and Rose Lee Carter can’t wait to move north. For now, she’s living with her sharecropper grandparents on a white man’s cotton plantation. Then, one town over, an African American boy, Emmett Till, is killed for allegedly whistling at a white woman. When Till’s murderers are unjustly acquitted, Rose realizes that the South needs a change and that she should be part of the movement. Linda Jackson’s moving debut seamlessly blends a fictional portrait of an African American family and factual events from a famous trial that provoked change in race relations in the United States.

Linda Jackson was born in a small town in Mississippi and likes to write about unassuming, everyday characters in small-town settings. She still lives in Mississippi with her husband and children.

When Mischief Came to Town Katrina Nannestad

* "[A] heartwarming and richly engaging tale." —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

When Inge Maria Jensen’s mother dies, the ten-year-old girl in braids is sent from Copenhagen to live on her grandmother’s farm on the Danish island of Bornholm. The whimsical Inge is desperate to tease a smile out of her stern-seeming but “jelly-soft” grandmother with nonsensical songs and Hans Christian Andersen stories. A nostalgic nod to Pippi Longstocking and Heidi, this cozy, humorous novel explores love and loss . . . and the unsung magic of mischief.

The award-winning Australian author Katrina Nannestad studied arts and education at the University of New England in Armidale in New South Wales. Her first teaching job was at a tiny two-teacher school in the bush. She now lives near Bendigo, Australia, with her husband and two sons.

America’s national parks have been called the country’s “best idea,” and some of the best scientific ideas are happening inside these protected spaces. There are geysers and grizzlies in Yellowstone, Gila monsters and saguaro cacti in southern Arizona, and the world’s only known population of red-cheeked salamanders in the Great Smoky Mountains. And in some parks you can roll up your sleeves and actively participate as a citizen scientist. There is much to see, do and learn, right here in America’s own backyard!

Bodies from the Ash Life and Death in Ancient Pompeii James M. Deem

* "With incredibly engrossing images and narrative, this is a powerful and poignant piece of nonfiction."—School Library Journal, starred review

In ancient times, Pompeii was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire. Its 20,000 inhabitants lived in the shadow of Vesuvius, which they believed was a mountain. But Vesuvius was an active volcano, and within twenty-four hours of its eruption, the city was destroyed. Hundreds of years later, archaeologists unearthed what was buried under the rubble. The most unexpected and extraordinary discovery? The imprints of Pompeiians, their deaths captured as if by photographic images in volcanic ash.

The Great American Dust Bowl Don Brown

* “A complete visual package.” —Booklist, starred review

On a clear, warm Sunday, April 14, 1935, a wild wind whipped up millions upon millions specks of dust to form a duster—a savage storm—on America’s high southern plains.

The sky turned black, sand-filled winds scoured the paint off houses and cars, trains derailed, and electricity coursed through the air. Sand and dirt fell like snow—people got lost in the gloom and suffocated . . . and that was just the beginning.

Don Brown brings the Dirty Thirties to life with lively artwork in this graphic novel of one of America's most catastrophic natural events: the Dust Bowl.

Farewell to Manzanar Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston

During World War II a community called Manzanar was created in the high mountain desert country of California. Its purpose was to house thousands of Japanese Americans. Among them was the Wakatsuki family, who were ordered to leave their fishing business in Long Beach and take with them only the belongings they could carry. Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, who was seven years old when she arrived at Manzanar in 1942, recalls life in the camp through the eyes of the child she was.

First published in 1973, this new edition of the classic memoir of a devastating Japanese American experience includes an inspiring afterword by the authors.

Under Rose-Tainted Skies Louise Gornall

“A love story set against the backdrop of debilitating mental illness. . . . Infused with humor, self-doubt, and, eventually, self-acceptance.” —School Library Journal

Norah has agoraphobia and OCD. While using a stick to snag grocery bags left on the porch, she meets Luke. He’s sweet and funny, and he just caught her fishing for groceries. Because of course he did. As their friendship grows deeper, Norah fears she’s being selfish. Doesn’t Luke deserve a normal girl—one who isn’t so screwed up? Readers will fall in love with Norah in this deeply engaging portrait of a teen struggling to find the strength to face her demons.

A junk food enthusiast, film nerd, and rumored pink Power Ranger, Louise Gornall writes about her own experiences to help encourage and facilitate conversations with other people also facing challenges with mental illness. She lives in England. www.bookishblurb.com @Rock_andor_Roll
