9 THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA SCHOOL OF MUSIC ABOUT THE ARTISTS

ERIC W. BUSH is associate director of bands and director of the Hawkeye Marching Band in the School of Music at the University of Iowa. In this role, he leads the athletic band program, conducts the Iowa Concert Band, and teaches various other courses, including marching band techniques and band arranging.

From 2015-18, Bush served as assistant director of bands and jazz studies at The Pennsylvania State University. He was actively involved with all operations of the Marching Blue Band and volleyball, basketball, and hockey pep bands. Also a member of the conducting, jazz, and graduate faculties, Bush worked with concert bands, taught undergraduate conducting, coached jazz combos, and directed the Inner Dimensions jazz ensemble.

From 2012-15, Bush served as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Iowa, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in band conducting and published his thesis titled The History of the Big Ten Band Directors Association (1971-2015). In spring 2015, Bush joined the faculty of Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, IA) as visiting director of bands where he served as conductor of the wind ensemble and jazz ensemble.

Bush is very active in the music community, as he guest conducts, clinics, and adjudicates regularly. His professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), Big Ten Band Directors Association (BTBDA), and the Iowa Bandmasters Association (IBA). Bush has served as faculty advisor to both the Penn State and University of Iowa collegiate chapters of the national music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. In this capacity, he was recently honored with the coveted Orpheus Award. Bush resides in Iowa City with his wife, Alex, who teaches in the UI Department of Dance, and their son, Brecken.

MEGAN MADDALENO received her Bachelor of Music Education degree with emphasis in Instrumental Studies from Webster University located in St. Louis, Missouri. During her time there, she was the recipient of the Peggy Fossett Endowed Scholarship Fund for Music, the Buder Foundation Music Performance Scholarship and was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa - The National Leadership Honors Society. Maddaleno also had the opportunity to study abroad in Vienna, , where she took direction under violinist, Harmut Ometzberger. The summer of 2013, Maddaleno worked as an editing and logistics intern for Jonathan Kozol’s Institute for Public Education, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, providing research on recent developments in the world of music education for a world-renowned social justice and public education figure. She graduated in December of 2014 with departmental and academic honors.

Maddaleno then worked in the Columbia Public School District as the Director of Orchestras for both West Middle School and Hickman High School for three years. There, she directed students grades 7-12. Her students have won honors from such organizations such as MMTA, MTNA, State Solo and Ensemble,

District Large Ensemble, All State Orchestra, and COMP. While in Columbia, Missouri, Maddaleno was a conducting student of Maestro Kirk Trevor, and acted as Musical Assistant of the Missouri Symphony Society Conservatory. Megan Maddaleno is now pursuing her Masters of Orchestral Conducting under the tutelage of Dr. William LaRue Jones.

Acclaimed for his musicality and virtuosity, VOLKAN ORHON has established himself as one of the top double bassists in the world today. He was a finalist and prizewinner in the Concert Artists Guild Solo Competition in New York City, and was the co-first place winner of the International Society of Bassists Solo Competition. Additionally, he distinguished himself as the first double bass player ever to win the grand prize overall and first prize for double bass at the American String Teacher’s Association Solo Competition.

Mr. Orhon has performed with internationally recognized musicians including Gary Karr, Fazil Say, the Emerson String Quartet, and Tokyo String Quartet, and has performed recitals and as a soloist with orchestras around the world. He has given solo recitals and concerts at institutions including the Bursa State Conservatory and Eskisehir Anatolian University (Turkey), Paris Conservatory, Norwegian Academy of Music, Arizona State University, University of Michigan, Butler University, Northwestern University and North Carolina School of the Arts.

Mr. Orhon has recorded CDs under the Albany, Centaur, and Crystal Records labels. Most recently he recently recorded the double bass concerto Bailey’s Beads with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, a work written for him by composer David Gompper. This recording will be released under the Naxos label in 2020.

As a pedagogue, Mr. Orhon has been an invited clinician to workshops across the and abroad, including European double bass conferences Bass2018 LUCCA, Bass Bass2010 Berlin, Bass2008 Paris, Ouro Branco Festival in , Suzuki Association of the Americas, American String Teachers Association and the International Society of Bassists. He has served on the faculties of the University of Connecticut, Central Connecticut State University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, The Hartt School Community Division of the University of Hartford, Kinhaven Music School (VT) and Summer Strings Music Festival in Pocatello, Idaho.

Violist CHRISTINE RUTLEDGE is a musician and educator of eclectic interests and talents. She is equally at home with performances of cutting- edge new music, works from the standard repertoire, and performances on baroque viola. She has commissioned, premiered, and recorded new music by such composers as Claude Baker, Zae Munn, Jeremy Dale Roberts, C. P. First, and David Gompper, with whom she frequently collaborates with the Center for New Music. Her performances and recordings (The Blissful Violist, String Trios of Paul Hindemith, and David Diamond: Chamber Works for Strings and Piano) have been praised in such publications as The Strad, Fanfare, The New York Times, and The New York Concert Review.

In an effort to provide violists with a larger and historically accurate body of baroque repertoire, Rutledge founded Linnet Press Editions. Her transcriptions

of works by Telemann, J. S. Bach, Biber, Roman, and Pisendel have been widely received for their historic accuracy and performer-friendly presentations. Rutledge has expanded Linnet Press Editions to include new editions of many out-of-print music from the English Romantic period, especially works written for the virtuoso violist Lionel Tertis. Her technique book, The Violist’s Handbook, has sold hundreds of copies throughout the world.

Recent performances and master classes and presentations on baroque performance practices include those in , , South Africa, New York City, University of Michigan Oberlin Conservatory, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, University of Northern Arizona, University of Kansas, and Bowling Green State University.

Currently Rutledge holds the position of Professor of Viola at the University of Iowa. She is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music as a student of Karen Tuttle and Michael Tree, and the University of Iowa with William Preucil, Sr. She is also a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, where she was honored as Valedictorian and recipient of a Young Artist Award. Among her many honors are Prizewinner in the Aspen Festival Viola Competition, an Indiana Arts Commission Individual Artist’s Fellowship, recipient of an Eli Lilly Foundation grant for undergraduate teaching development, as well as several awards from the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts at the University of Notre Dame and the Arts and Humanities Initiative at the University of Iowa.

SAMUEL JACK STAPLETON has been the Orchestra Director at Central College in Pella, Iowa, since the Summer of 2017. He is concurrently finishing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Iowa under the tutelage of Dr. William LaRue Jones.

Stapleton has been the Music Director of the Cambridge Philharmonic, in Cambridge, Massachusetts (2011-15), the Boston New Music Initiative (2009- 11), and was an Associate Director and Principal 2nd Violin of the Boston String Players (2009-2012). Sam holds Masters degrees in Orchestral Conducting and Violin Performance from the University of Iowa, a Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and has pursued additional musical studies at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence, , the Aspen Music Festival, the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors, and at the New England Conservatory.
