What tools and processes will be needed to create these vehicles? Leaders from the commercial vehicle industry will share their vision of the future, the challenges expected and the plans to get us there. Regulatory agencies will provide perspective from research programs and the effect of legislation on future vehicle requirements. Fleets will give us a picture of their needs based on the work being done by the Technology and Maintenance Council¿s future Truck Program. Organizers - Deborah M. Freund, Federal Motor Carrier Safety; Thomas Peter Howell, Jacobs Vehicle Systems Inc.; Paul Menig, Tech-I-M; Tom Stover, Eaton Moderators - Tom Stover, Eaton Panelists - Alan BERGER, Volvo Construction Equipment; Christopher Bonanti, US Dept. of Transportation; Gary Hunter, AVL Powertrain Engineering Inc.; Dave Jackson, Knight Transportation Inc.; Paul Menig, Tech-I- M; Gary Schwartzkopf, Caterpillar Inc.; Tuesday, October 1 Vehicle Data ¿ Telematics & Electronics On-Board Recorder (EOBR) Session Code: CV411 Room 10 Session Time: 8:30 a.m. Commercial vehicle industry is continuously searching for opportunities to improve productivity, up-time, asset utilization, and reduce operating costs. The data provided through vehicle telematics enable operational and business efficiencies through real-time tracking/alerts and back-office data analysis. EOBRs are used to log large amounts of diagnostics and performance data. Analyzing this real world data can be invaluable for making performance gains and reducing warranty costs. Organizers - Shom Bandopadhaya, Belcan Engineering Group Inc.; Mark D. Jensen, Vector CANtech Inc. Time Paper No. Title 12:00 a.m. 2013-01-2400 A Statistical Characterization of School Bus Drive Cycles Collected via Onboard Logging Systems (Written Only -- No Oral Presentation) Adam Duran, Kevin Walkowicz, National Renewable Energy Laboratory 8:30 a.m. 2013-01-2402 Assessment of Heavy Vehicle EDR Technologies Darrell Bowman, Andrew Marinik, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute; H. Gabler, Virginia Tech 9:00 a.m. 2013-01-2401 Remote Calculating Cluster for Vehicle Preventive Monitoring: The First Results ORAL ONLY Aleksandr Kirillov Sr, Smartsystem Prognosis; Sergey Anatolievich Kirillov, SmartTech. Appl; Michael Pecht, Univ of Maryland 9:30 a.m. ORAL ONLY Technology of Telematics for Custom Vehicle Manufacturers The subject of this presentation will be the technology of telematics for custom vehicle manufacturers. There have been significant advancements in the areas of telematics over the past 5 years. Telematics started in the oil & gas industries monitoring stationary assets via satellite communications. As the technology has migrated to mobile vehicles, communication types shifted to cellular and Wi-Fi to reduce cost and increase data speeds. This shift has allowed telematics to evolve from simply a unidirectional reporting system to a bidirectional tool that significantly increases the usability of the technology. Today, telematics has a number of implementation strategies ¿ vehicle tracking, fleet management, precision farming, and transportation/ entertainment. The focus of this presentation will be on fleet management and the usable features. Geofencing and vehicle tracking provides real-time location data and alerts. Real-time health monitoring and historical data trending can be used for preventative and predictive maintenance. Precision diagnostics (capture data every 10ms) can provide skilled technicians the data to remotely resolve issues. With alerts and alarms, fleet managers can monitor the health and productivity of their assigned vehicles. In addition, over-the-air programming and configurability of vehicle data is key to allowing the end user to monitor the vehicle parameters that are important to them for that specific vehicle. The presentation will review the implementation and sellable value of these features. Christopher Kolbe, HED Planned by Electrical and Electronics Group / Commercial Vehicle Activity Tuesday, October 1 Software Testing Session Code: CV413 Room 10 Session Time: 10:00 a.m. This session will focus on emerging requirements and methods for conducting software testing. Exhaustive software testing that involves checking every combination of inputs and outputs for valid system behavior is not practical. Increasingly, statistical testing will be important, as complex system inputs incorporate HMI and potentially unknown data sets on shared vehicle communication busses. SAE J1939 compliance testing will also be important as more devices 'get on the bus'. Organizers - Daniel Zula, Bendix Time Paper No. Title 10:00 a.m. 2013-01-2403 Survey of Concerns in Embedded Systems Requirements Engineering Daniel Aceituna, DISTek Integration, Inc. 10:30 a.m. 2013-01-2404 Virtual Validation - A New Paradigm in Controls Engineering Mahendra Muli, Joe Cassar, dSPACE Inc. • Jacobs Vehicle Systems: the Innovative Market Leader in Engine Braking Technologies, Working Exclusively with Diesel Engine Manufacturers Globally
Company background information: Jacobs Vehicle Systems: The innovative market leader in engine braking technologies, working exclusively with diesel engine manufacturers globally Jacobs Vehicle Systems® (JVS) is the world leader in engine retarding and valve actuation technologies, developing integrated engineering solutions that improve performance on the world’s best trucks. JVS technologies can be found in every country across the globe, on medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles. Jacobs is the only engine retarding company that partners with leading diesel engine manufacturers in development, testing and after sales support. This alliance of capabilities uniquely brings together engine manufacturers as the combustion experts and Jacobs as the retarding and valve actuation experts. JVS works with diesel engine manufacturers by integrating the retarding function into the engine design. The Jacobs Engine Brake, widely known as the Jake Brake®, uses the engine to assist in slowing and controlling a heavy vehicle by altering the operation of the exhaust valves so that the engine works as a power-absorbing air compressor. This provides a slowing action to the vehicle’s drive wheels - a supplement to the friction brakes that results in greater vehicle controllability, improved braking performance and safety, reduced service brake maintenance, shorter trip times, and in a lower total cost of ownership. Since the Jacobs’ Engine Brake was introduced in 1961, engine retarding technologies have become ever-more sophisticated and effective, with JVS at the forefront of innovation and development. Today JVS manufactures three types of retardation systems: exhaust, bleeder, and compression release brakes. JVS also markets a Rocker-Stop Device (RSD) to improve the smoothness of engine start-up and shutdown, hydraulic lash adjuster compatible engine brake, variable valve actuation system and a high power density (HPD) brake.
